Viral Hit Review: Directed by Hideki Takeuchi and written by Yuichi Tokunaga, adapting the popular Korean webtoon by Park Tae-jun. The six-episode Netflix Japanese series Kenka Dokugaku (喧嘩独学) stars Oji Suzuka as Kota Shimura, Ai Mikami as Aki Yashio, Araki Sugô as Toru Kaneko, alongside Kentaro Maeda, Takuro Osada, Noritaka Hamao, Nana Asakawa and others.

It is quite captivating to observe the struggle of an average man who refuses to settle for anything less than being at the top. That is why I found Netflix’s Japanese series Viral Hit compelling enough to capture my attention. The drama features Kota Shimura, who leads a life marked with misfortunes and setbacks wherever he turns. He gets bullied at school, teased by other students, and works while studying because he needs money to pay for his mother’s treatment. The beginning is so harsh on him that it feels merciless to watch.
However, the feeling of hopeless desperation actually plays a crucial role here. When Kota finally discovers the world of streaming fighting, it no longer seems to be a crazy step he takes but rather a risky one made by someone with no choice left. What starts with a lucky turn of events quickly transforms into a journey of discovery, gaining confidence, and survival.
The part of the Netflix series Viral Hit that I enjoyed most is the way in which Kota never achieves sudden hero status in any instance. In the typical underdog tale, there is often a discovery of some hidden ability on the part of the main character, which makes them untouchable. The drama differs in its take on things. The protagonist may not be the most powerful adversary, but through hard work, he wins the day.
And this gives more reason why his victories are satisfying. Each punch delivered by him is meaningful since everyone knows the amount of struggle he had to undergo to get to this point. The transformation from a frightened prey to somebody strong enough to defend himself gives a lot of emotion to the entire story.
One of the major factors that contributes to the success of this character development is the acting of Oji Suzuka. The fact that Oji Suzuka portrays a vulnerable Kota allows the audience to rally behind him. Even though he may sometimes exaggerate, his emotions are very believable. And this is one of the reasons why his confidence is believable, too.
The supporting cast also has its role in making the Netflix Viral Hit series entertaining. Ai Mikami is excellent as Aki, providing balance in a story where chaos reigns supreme. Toru Kaneko, played by Araki Sugo, seems like a stereotypical hero at first glance; however, the character eventually turns out to be much more complex than anticipated. Friendships formed during the course of the show ensure that it does not become just another action series.
One of the things I liked best about Viral Hit was that it captured internet culture well in today’s time. They understand the bizarre nature of online streaming, popularity, and the internet phenomenon. In terms of comments, donations, likes, and reactions, they showed that opinions can be easily reversed. One day, you could be a saint, and the very next, you are the laughing stock of the internet world.
Though the commentary isn’t always subtle, it works well. The internet itself acts like a character in the narrative, playing a part as influential as the characters themselves. This show delves into the positives and negatives of becoming famous on the internet, demonstrating how fame on the internet can open doors but also make someone a target.
In terms of visual elements, the Japanese series Viral Hit features an energetic aesthetic that works perfectly in harmony with the content of the show. The combat scenes are inventive and amusing, as they depend on strategy more than anything else. The fight choreography is specifically crafted to be engaging for audiences, and the camera shots resemble those seen by live-streaming viewers.
However, there are definitely weaknesses in the series, as well. The main one that I experienced was connected with the somewhat unrealistic way in which the plot was developed. The villains are too evil, some events seem completely impossible in real life, and I found myself wondering how any school can tolerate such bullying.
Still, the above-mentioned weaknesses did not pose too big a problem to me since I knew well what type of series I was dealing with. The program does not strive for realism. On the contrary, it capitalises on its elevated concept and attempts to create entertainment. If you agree with this approach, then you have much to like.
Ultimately, the one thing that left an impression on me after I watched the entire series was the message of resilience. Among all the impressive fights, viral videos, and exaggerated drama, there is an inspirational tale of a young man who won’t allow others to set his value. It is not only about him learning how to fight, but also about learning how he deserves respect and confidence.
Netflix Viral Hit Review: Summing Up
Despite its campiness and plot holes, overall, Viral Hit is a spirited series full of action and socially relevant themes while featuring a story of an underdog who makes something of himself. This show is certainly not perfect, but its engaging storyline and strong cast will easily keep you entertained through to the end.
