Fifties Professionals Review: Directed by Han Dong-hwa, 오ì‹í”„ë¡œ, starring Shin Ha-kyun as Jung Ho-myeong, Oh Jung-se as Bong Je-sun, and Heo Sung-tae as Kang Beom-ryong as the main characters, with Lee Hak-joo, Kwon Yul, Kim Sang-ho, and many others in supporting roles. The show is an odd combination of action, mystery, and comedy genres, but it manages to be enjoyable, about three ex-operatives for whom their glory days are now past.

Fifties Professionals Episode 1 starts off ten years in the past, when South Korean intelligence discovers information about a highly ranked official who is suspected of working for a massive trafficking and smuggling operation. The only lead that they have on their hands is the defection of a woman dubbed Black Pearl, who has taken important information and assets from influential individuals of North Korea.
However, in order to get back the stolen goods, there are many ruthless characters who are dispatched to hunt her down. These include a South Korean agent known as Shadow, a formidable North Korean agent named Bulgae, and the ruthless Beom-ryong, who is associated with Hwasan. All of them converge on a ferry, where they clash with one another. Before any of them could lay their hands on the package, chaos broke out, resulting in the deaths of some of the agents.
After ten years have gone by, the feared warriors of old are leading relatively mundane existences. The once notorious Shadow is now toiling away in his parents’ Chinese food establishment, with unpaid debts rather than covert missions occupying his thoughts. The former Bulgae, having forgotten all about his past, leads a modest existence in which he endures workplace ridicule every day.
Once a feared warrior, Kang Beom-ryong is now working at a convenience store, with a crush on one of the local policemen keeping him occupied. Despite the seemingly unrelated lives of these men, they all continue to be associated with the enigmatic case of the lost package. This quiet lifestyle will soon come crashing down around them after hints of an alternative explanation for the death of Black Pearl surface.
The investigation starts taking shape due to the efforts of Gang Yeong-ae, the prosecutor who will not let go of the case until the real truth is exposed. In her investigations, she manages to uncover connections between the ferry mishap, political players, and powerful businesses. One name that comes up repeatedly in the various theories is that of Han Gyeong-wook, a politician whose influence keeps increasing year after year. While on one hand, Han advocates for increased influence politically, on the other hand, he works with criminal syndicates and businessmen who have been buying large areas of land surrounding Yeongseon Island.
Conversely, destiny reunites Ho-myeong and Je-sun once more through an altercation that occurs at Heaven Capital, where the fight soon turns violent. Almost immediately, Ho-myeong picks up the traits of the famous Bulgae hiding inside the reserved Je-sun, but Je-sun is completely oblivious to the fact that he is the reincarnation of the legendary man.
In addition, things go from bad to worse when local thugs attack Je-sun along with his nephew because of property disputes in relation to the development of the island. With the danger growing stronger, Beom-ryong is soon forced to relive the days of fighting he believed he had left behind when he became friends with Gong-bok, one of his subordinates who has devoted years to searching for the package.
With the ongoing investigation, many elements collide. Yeong-ae finds evidence linking the current corruption scandal to what happened ten years ago, while Ho-myeong is discreetly observing both Je-sun and the criminal organisations surrounding the Yeongseon Island area. Gong-bok finally exposes the extent of the damage caused by the unsuccessful ferry run on the Hwasan Corporation, explaining how long he has been looking for answers all along. Meanwhile, organised crime networks responsible for drug trafficking and acquiring land areas start to make their own attempts at action, which creates a very perilous situation for everybody.
By the end of Fifties Professionals Episode 4, things escalate quickly. Ho-myeong finds himself torn between his private inquiries and his role as a husband and father, causing trouble at home. Yeong-ae continues her quest for truth, despite the warnings, putting herself in harm’s way. Beom-ryong must choose between reestablishing his former network and trying to live a quiet life, whereas Je-sun is still a mystery card, potentially revealing her forgotten past.
As enemies approach and all the separate inquiries start overlapping, Ho-myeong struggles to rescue Yeong-ae once he learns that certain people in power have decided she is aware of too many secrets. In the end, Ho-myeong and Beom-ryong stand on the edge of a new collision course.
Fifties Professionals Review
The director, Han Dong-hwa, deserves applause for managing multiple genres in the kdrama Fifties Professionals flawlessly. This television show can be classified as an action thriller, mystery drama, and a comedy combined. It is amazing how the switching between genres rarely seems unnatural in the series. Episodes from the first four episodes jump between past and present frequently.
Action scenes in the Korean drama Fifties Professionals have also been executed exceptionally well. In most cases, the action scenes are based on character behaviour. Moreover, it would not be wrong to say that the drama adopts a somewhat cartoonish approach to complement the comedy genre. The plot revolves around the mystery of Black Pearl, the disappearance of the package, and corruption on Yeongseon Island.
The most powerful element in the Korean series Fifties Professionals comes from its acting. Shin Ha-kyun, Oh Jung-se, and Heo Sung-tae are all highly charismatic actors who lend weight to their respective parts even though there are multiple story lines to follow.
Shin Ha-kyun as the character Jeong Ho-myeong probably has the most complicated and dynamic personality among the three. From the outside, he is just an average husband with two kids and a small restaurant business to keep going. But from time to time, one gets a chance to see the sophisticated ex-operative hiding inside this apparently normal-looking man. Shin Ha-kyun manages this switch perfectly.
Oh Jung-se plays the part of Bong Je-sun to create some of the funniest parts of the drama. This is because of the differences between the current and previous versions of his characters. Despite the comedic nature of his scenes, Oh Jung-se still manages to create a sense of sorrow for Je-sun that makes him very lovable. Each scene featuring Je-sun ends up leaving viewers curious about when his strong side will resurface.
The part of Kang Beom-ryong is played by Heo Sung-tae, another highlight of the drama. Seeing what used to be a feared gang leader work as an employee of a convenience store, struggling to charm his crush, is one of the most amusing things about this series. While doing this, Heo Sung-tae still makes sure that viewers do not forget how fearsome he once was.
One of the most fascinating themes discussed in the show is that of purposefulness at an older age. Each of the three main characters used to be an outstanding person, but now leads quite a banal life that might bring frustration to them. The series constantly discusses how people move away from their past and what happens when the unfinished affairs come back after many years.
Another theme that runs through the show is the problem of identity. Ho-myeong experiences problems connected with his identity since he does not know what path to choose – be a decent husband and father, or become a Shadow again. Je-sun has problems with recalling memories about his childhood, and Beom-ryong tries to lead a happy life despite being a criminal previously.
Corruption and political aspiration are among other themes depicted through the characters. This is evident from Han Gyeong-wook’s intrigues and the increasing conflict on Yeongseon Island. It shows how influential people can take advantage of the system at the expense of the less fortunate members of society.
Fifties Professionals Episode 1-4 Review: Summing Up
The impression left after watching Fifties Professionals Episodes 1 to 4 is quite a positive one. This TV drama manages to merge action, mystery and comedy into a cohesive narrative offering the audience three likeable protagonists to follow. The acting by the three main stars makes this show even better.
While a couple of minor characters could have been fleshed out a little bit more, the plot already offers a rich and intriguing world of secrets, conspiracies and unexpected emotional moments. As the investigation starts making progress, long-forgotten rivals appear once again, and three heroes move towards the same goal, the drama has managed to establish a good foundation for future episodes.
