Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of Doctor on the Edge introduces Do Ji-ui in his military training program. He is not serving as a military man, but rather as a public health doctor while undertaking his mandatory military service. At one point during the training exercises, two men fell off the wall of a climbing rope and sustained injuries. Ji-ui steps up to handle the emergency with the skill of a competent physician.

After his training is completed, Ji-ui comes to learn that he is posted to Pyeongdong Island, precisely the kind of posting he did not wish to get. While on his way to Pyeongdong, Ji-ui feels uneasy, and as such, takes medication prior to boarding a boat. When he reaches the boat, he notices a young lady who happens to be talking to someone in a manner that closely resembles how he was talking on the phone. Things, however, take an unusual twist when Ji-ui thinks he sees the lady jumping into the water. He, in turn, jumps in too, only to realise later that what he experienced was a hallucination.

Ji-ui awakens at the public health facility on the island and starts getting acclimatised to his new environment. Here, he is introduced to the place and learns about some of the problems they encounter when administering their services from such a remote place. He is not satisfied with what he sees regarding the outdated equipment in use. However, he soon discovers just how much the people rely on this clinic. Things only get worse when he finds out that his bags have been interchanged with another person’s.

Through a series of clues, Ji-ui finally manages to locate the owner of the case, coming face-to-face with the enigmatic lady on the ferry. She is called Yook Ha-ri, and she tells him that she is the one who had rescued him when he passed out. Ha-ri also observes the medicine he is taking and tells him that it doesn’t appear to suit him. The first real meeting between the two ends up being both awkward and amusing.

Ji-ui later reunites with his colleagues as he starts adapting to the new environment. Nevertheless, his proficiency in the field of medicine is tested when Mr Park, a fisherman in his eighties, approaches him claiming to have indigestion. From the very beginning, Ji-ui recognises that the signs are those of a heart attack and immediately intervenes.

After being reluctant to receive any further assistance, Mr Park’s condition quickly deteriorates, and Ji-ui has to evacuate him to a mainland hospital. Drained from the whole situation and without having any place to stay overnight, Ji-ui is forced to return to the island the following morning. In the middle of a series of disturbing flashbacks involving the sea, Ha-ri suddenly manages to soothe him and surprise him in the process.

Doctor on the Edge Episode 2 Recap

In Doctor on the Edge Episode 2, the plot immediately resumes from where it ended in the previous episode. Ha-ri tries to soothe Ji-ui’s increasing unease by giving him earphones and sweets. While having a talk with him, she tells him about how she heard him call someone’s name when he was in a deep sleep state, causing him to get nervous. Having felt that he had confided too much to her, Ji-ui pulls back.

Returning to the clinic, Ji-ui’s strictness with regard to his medical practices soon becomes a source of contention for the islanders. He declines to prescribe the villagers their customary medication without first properly examining them and instead focuses on curing what really causes the disease. Although this decision is undoubtedly wise, it does not please the islanders, who are accustomed to more laid-back practices. Even Nurse Hwang suggests to Ji-ui that becoming acclimatised to island life could be equally as significant as curing diseases.

In the meantime, Ha-ri officially becomes a new nurse at the health centre. This news is surprising for everyone, including Ji-ui, who has no other choice but to collaborate with Ha-ri. Everyone notices the obvious discomfort that occurs between them, but Chi-yeon appears to be really pleased to meet Ha-ri once more. Soon after their adaptation process, Ji-ui and Ha-ri are tasked with conducting a visit to a cancer patient in a remote location.

The journey turns out to be harder than originally planned. On the way, Ji-ui’s fears regarding bugs, darkness, and unknown places become apparent, giving rise to many funny situations. Once they arrive at their destination and meet the patient named Kim Jeong-bae, they realise that this is an obstinate man who rejects help even though he is in increasingly poor shape. However, despite Ji-ui’s wish to get away from there after receiving threats, Ha-ri does not back down.

However, later Ji-ui and Ha-ri realise the real seriousness of Jeong-bae’s sickness. His diabetes had worsened drastically, and symptoms of gangrene were already visible. No matter how much they had warned him about his condition, he did not accept any help, nor did he want anyone to know about his condition. Ha-ri’s convincing talk makes him think again, and finally, he reaches the clinic himself.

They can now start treating him. While working together, Ji-ui and Ha-ri gradually learn more about one another. But just when everything seemed like going well, episode 2 of Doctor on the Edge ends with an unexpected turn of events when the village chief comes out and abuses Ji-ui for lying to him before throwing garbage on him.

Doctor on the Edge Episode 1-2 Review

It must be noted that the first two episodes of Doctor on the Edge kdrama have brilliantly introduced Ji-ui and placed him in circumstances that he probably never wished for. Although Ji-ui is undoubtedly gifted and capable of treating patients, he starts his journey in Pyeongdong Island with a lot of emotional weight that makes him see the island differently. His fear of water, hallucinations and the necessity to adapt to life on the island make Ji-ui feel like an alien since the very first day. Nevertheless, the drama successfully manages to combine serious moments with humour.

Ha-ri turns out to be one of the most intriguing characters in the entire Doctor on the Edge series. This is an incredibly collected, clear-headed girl who can deal with Ji-ui’s disbelief regarding the events of the ferry. It is always very amusing watching her interact with the boy since she is his total opposite. In contrast to the guy, who always tries to figure out something that is happening around him, Ha-ri is perfectly at ease dealing with the uncertainty of life on the island.

Also, it is fascinating to observe medical cases because they bring to light the actual difficulties of working in a remote area. For instance, it is evident that Ji-ui is an excellent physician after treating Mr Park; however, it takes great effort to make patients obey his instructions. The fact that the action takes place on an island makes medical situations even more complicated. It was quite interesting to note that the second episode ended with Mr Park attacking Ji-ui even when he had been saved by him.

Doctor on the Edge Review: Summing Up

Overall, in addition to this, with many mysteries about Ji-ui’s past not being solved and his relationship with Ha-ri becoming more significant, the drama has left a number of loose ends untied for now. Both episodes of the K-drama Doctor on the Edge have laid a great groundwork, and I am eagerly awaiting its future episodes.
