Night Has Come

With stars Lee Jae-in, Kim Woo-seok, and Choi Ye-bin, this drama puts an unnerving spin on a school trip scenario by throwing a bunch of kids in a survival situation, whereby getting voted out of the game will mean death for the unlucky loser. It’s not long before the participants find themselves in a state of paranoia about who is playing the game and how they can make it end because there is no way of knowing or trusting what is happening around them.

It’s the same sense of suffocation of friendships in this drama that reminds us of If Wishes Could Kill. As in that case, the Girigo application capitalises on hidden fears; the mafia game in this series tests everyone’s friendships to the core. It forces everyone involved to dig deep to discover things they would never share openly or even think about in their right mind.

All of Us Are Dead

The cast, led by actors Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun, and Lomon, creates a beloved global television series which puts school kids in a zombie apocalypse where they have to fight for their lives in the midst of danger at every turn, with no hope of rescue in sight.

This show shares a similar feel to that of If Wishes Could Kill in its ability to evoke emotions. There will be strained friendships, sacrifices, and the possibility of losing somebody dear to you at any point in time. The horror is not just in the zombies, but in the emotional toll it takes on the characters, much like how the curse in Girigo slowly breaks people from within.

Connect

With Jung Hae-in and Go Kyung-pyo starring in it, Connect is the dark tale of a man whose life turns upside down when his eye gets gouged out, allowing him to experience whatever the serial killer experiences. In effect, he finds himself stuck in a nightmare from which he is unable to escape, witnessing horrific incidents in front of his very eyes, unable to exercise any control over what is happening.

The parallel with If Wishes Could Kill arises once again from that feeling of being helpless. In the same way as the users become bound by the app, the hero here becomes attached to something that he cannot get away from, no matter how much he wants to.

Revenant

Revenant, starring Kim Tae-ri, Oh Jung-se and Hong Kyung, explores the genre of folklore horror through a plot focusing on possession and its underlying mysteries. This is seen through a series of unexplained deaths, leading to a gradual uncovering of various traumatic experiences, secrets and emotional turmoil.

The reason why the movie has so much in common with If Wishes Could Kill is the way in which supernatural elements are tied to the emotions experienced by the characters. This is seen through an entity that sustains itself through their feelings of hatred, just as the curse of Girigo thrives due to their conflicts within themselves.

The Cursed

The series features actors such as Uhm Ji-won, Jung Ji-so and Sung Dong-il. Through its main characters, The Cursed introduces a terrifying universe that not only hides dark entities in the shadows but also uses the powers of those entities to perform actions in large and powerful companies. Specifically, one may say that The Cursed focuses on a young girl who can kill someone instantly after getting their name, photo and some of their personal objects, along with a reporter who reveals that the said supernatural ability can be connected to a big-tech company.

It is possible to state that both of these series share very similar premises because both of them associate an ancient and uncontrollable force with a modern one, which might seem relatively safe at first sight. For example, a corporation or an application does not sound as terrifying as a mysterious power from another dimension until the viewers find out that it is the means through which such forces become active and deadly because of their human manipulations.
