How Did Hyun-woo Die?

Hyun-wook’s death will mark that turning point where it goes from being just a weird app to becoming something very creepy. For example, at first, it looked like he was gaining from using the Girigo app since he started coming in first place in class, which is something unusual since he was usually a failure. However, things turn from lucky for him to creepy when he starts seeing a countdown on his cell phone.

With only a few minutes left, Hyun-wook’s personality changes to something weird, as if he is possessed by something. And then comes the most horrific scene: in front of the entire school, he kills himself by cutting his own throat. This is not a coincidence but a punishment for making his wish come true. The lesson we learn here is that there is always going to be a price to pay when using the Girigo app. In other words, all wishes require someone to die in order to become true.

How Did Hatsal Break Se-ah’s Thread with the Curse World Initially?

The link between Se-ah and the curse strengthens considerably when Geon-woo is admitted to the hospital. As she watches him struggle with life and death, she feels completely helpless and realises that nothing else can be done at this point. In her desperate effort to rescue him, she installs the Girigo app herself and makes a wish: she wishes that he would go back to his former self again. Her wish comes true, and his health improves dramatically, but just like everybody else, Se-ah is instantly cursed with a countdown appearing on her smartphone screen. Understanding that she needs help to deal with this situation, Ha-joon brings her to his sister, Hatsal.

Hatsal conducts a ceremony which transports Se-ah into the spirit realm, where the power controlling the app truly resides. Once there, Se-ah is presented with an exact condition that would allow her to leave the realm – she must exit through three gates, all the while never looking back. As a means of trapping her psychologically, each gate presents itself as a tormentor, pushing Se-ah’s will to its limits.

The first gate triggers the memories of the traumatic experience when her friend was brutally killed. The second gate is haunted by the memory of Se-ah’s parents’ death due to a car accident. The third gate is the harshest of them all. As Se-ah passes it, she hears the voice of Ha-joon saying that he installed the app himself to save her life, and if she does not look back, Ha-joon will die.

This one instance grants the entity enough power to tighten its grip on her and force Hatsal to face off against it head-on. Knowing that Se-ah is completely trapped in the curse, Hatsal acts upon her from within the spiritual plane itself. With her powers, she severs the chain that connects Se-ah to the curse, literally breaking its ties with the world of reality. Though this releases Se-ah from the curse, it is evident that Hatsal is not spared from its effects as well. The spell is definitely not over yet, for it is impossible to break free from the curse by running away from it.

What Was the Origin of the Girigo App?

Girigo App was not born evil from the start. Rather, it started as an innocent project initiated by some students, especially Si-won and her companions, for a programming task. The premise of the application itself is innocuous—a platform for users to wish upon something, as though sending a message to the cosmos. Thus far, there was no strength in Girigo; it was nothing but an invention.

It was all due to personal vendetta and trauma. The bad blood between Si-won and her mother, the shaman, together with her hatred for her best friend Hye-ryung, resulted in a dangerous spell cast without intention, making the program contain spiritual power. Subsequently, under humiliation and duress, Hye-ryung made use of the program out of sheer desperation and sacrificed herself to give death to the ones that had wronged her, resulting in the formation of a curse program. Lastly, Si-won’s own dying wish helped ensure that the curse continues eternally rather than ending with her demise. Henceforth, Girigo was more than just code; it was vengeance itself spreading through the masses.

Was Se-ah Able to End the Curse?

However, Se-ah eventually manages to break the curse at least on the superficial level by coming to understand the true nature of it. At first, everyone in the group thinks that breaking Hye-ryung’s phone used for the app, would be enough to bring an end to all these horrors, but this proves to be a misconception. The real truth behind this eternal curse is revealed to be Si-won’s last wish, and this continues the cursed cycle despite the death of Hye-ryung.

Within this domain, Hatsal manages to distract and contain Si-won’s spirit, risking her own life for the opportunity to do so. On the other hand, Se-ah finds Si-won’s mobile phone, which truly serves as the source of the curse. Following a tough battle, which includes fighting Na-ri, Se-ah succeeds in destroying the mobile phone by means of a spiritual tool. As a result, the curse loses its strength since the spiritual connection collapses. Upon their return to the real world, the danger has passed.

What Happened to Na-ri at the End of If Wishes Could Kill?

The most painful fate of all belongs to Na-ri. Due to the growing insecurities and jealousy, she becomes an easy victim of the curse since she suffers from the internal conflict between her feelings for Geon-woo and her hatred towards Se-ah. All of these inner states are used by the force manipulating Girigo, which makes Na-ri go crazy.

At the end of If Wishes Could Kill, Na-ri blocks Se-ah’s way in the spiritual realm. No matter how hard Se-ah tries to appeal to her, Na-ri becomes unable to think rationally, being totally driven by her distorted emotions and manipulations. With no other solution left and limited time, Se-ah is forced to battle with her, and this results in Na-ri’s death. This tragic scene takes place due to the destruction of Se-ah from her friends’ side, as well as their connections and relationships.

What Does the Mid-Credit Scene Signify? Will There Be an If Wishes Could Kill Season 2?

This mid-credit scene totally ruins our sense of relief. What we get is a glimpse of Hyun-wook’s friend on Discord giving directions to his whereabouts. He is directed to the school grounds, more precisely, to the place where Na-ri’s cell phone was found. It just does not seem to be coincidental; rather, it looks as if someone is trying to guide him there purposefully.

In the process of acquiring the mobile phone, the anticipation surrounding his task is heightened by what would have seemed to be an ordinary activity. His commands are given in such a way as if there is a person at the other end who knows precisely what to do in the process. The most terrifying thing about the situation is the idea that Na-ri could have been the one issuing the directions. The tenor of the orders, their persistence, and even the manner of issuance give the idea that this is no ordinary internet transaction but something more sinister. It implies that the essence of Na-ri’s soul or the curse itself remains potent despite her death.

And this is right where the epilogue’s message lies; it is impossible to get rid of the curse completely since it lives off human desire. Even when you manage to destroy one origin of it, there will always be another source for it to feed on and someone else for it to infect. The unresolved feelings that Na-ri held, such as her jealousy and animosity, might have been powerful enough to leave a permanent mark. However, should the series get a second season? Judging by its final chapter, it is quite possible. Although there is no official statement, it seems that the ending of If Wishes Could Kill was written to leave room for continuation.
