The film touches upon deeper topics like the legacy pressure, personal battles, and family vulnerabilities, but it does not stop to investigate any of them for long enough.
The aspiration of Armaan Jain and the emotional memory of Randhir Kapoor regarding his deceased brothers could have created great narrative threads; for example, the documentary feels more like a family photo album than a storytelling session because these threads are presented momentarily and then vanish.

If the audience expects to get in on the actual workings of the family relationships, they will soon discover that the only thing the cameras have caught is what is permitted to be shown.

In fact, the documentary does bring in some of the lesser-known members of the Kapoor family, so the introduction is fresh for even those audiences who think they know every single-not-to-mention-those-more-distant-ones branch of the Kapoor legacy. However, the film still opts for brevity instead of going for depth, even in this case. There are even times when you can almost feel where the (no speaking) boundaries are laid that the characters must not cross.
Dining With the Kapoors is, without a doubt, a warm, cosy, and nostalgic documentary. It is the kind of movie that gives the audience comfort, familiarity, and the feel-goodness of being able to watch a family whose kids have grown and who are now going to celebrate their grandfather’s 100th birthday. For the fans, that is the only thing that makes the documentary worth watching.
The documentary is good in a way, but it does not reveal anything new because it is highly sentimental and aesthetic. No one watching it will get a raw and honest look into the Kapoor family. The movie prefers to be very sweet and not so revealing, pleasing but definitely safe.
