One begins to realise that it is not enough for Moriah to be gifted; she is driven as if there is no tomorrow. In fact, this drive is what makes her death even more tragic. Nevertheless, the documentary does not stay in remembrance for too long. In the blink of an eye, the film switches gears and takes the audience to the harsh realities that took place in May 2022. The shift is sudden yet deliberate. In one instance, you are watching an aspiring athlete pursue her dreams, while in another, she’s brutally murdered.
The documentary traces the events before the incident occurred, paying particular attention to Moriah’s connection to cyclist Colin Strickland and their complex romantic history with Kaitlin Armstrong. It avoids exaggeration and clearly shows how a series of entangled emotions, misunderstandings, and jealousy turned into an irreparable chain reaction. However, one thing that the documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson does well is that it manages to steer clear of sensationalising the issue. There arises an impression that while getting to know Moriah as a person, one cannot understand the extent of loss for the sport.
As far as the coverage of people related to the story, the film manages to avoid going into unnecessary detail about the personality of Kaitlin Armstrong, focusing on the evidence and actions instead. While this approach allows respecting the memory of Moriah to a great extent, it is not quite complete.
The transition back to remembrance in the conclusion is something that I really appreciate. We get to see the ways in which Moriah’s family members have kept her memory alive by continuing her work or simply keeping her memories alive in their minds. This makes for an interesting conclusion, being both a heartwarming and sad one at the same time.
