The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson Review: Directed by Marina Zenovich, this documentary belongs to that category of true-crime films which attempt not only to break down what happened during the crime but also to document the life of the victim, who is no longer with us. Inspired by a Bicycling Magazine article written by Rowan Moore Gerety, which is about the murder of a rising cyclist named Moriah Wilson.

The Netflix documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson follows a very personal trajectory. By way of old video footage, family recordings, and genuine interviews, we get to know Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson not as a victim, but as an ambitious and spirited young girl who always wanted more out of life. From her love of skiing from an early age, her perseverance following injury, to her success in gravel cycling, everything about Moriah speaks volumes about her strong character.

There is something intense about how she went through life in Netflix’s The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson. One begins to realise that it is not enough for Moriah to be gifted; she is driven as if there is no tomorrow. In fact, this drive is what makes her death even more tragic. Nevertheless, the documentary does not stay in remembrance for too long. In the blink of an eye, the film switches gears and takes the audience to the harsh realities that took place in May 2022. The shift is sudden yet deliberate. In one instance, you are watching an aspiring athlete pursue her dreams, while in another, she’s brutally murdered.

The documentary traces the events before the incident occurred, paying particular attention to Moriah’s connection to cyclist Colin Strickland and their complex romantic history with Kaitlin Armstrong. It avoids exaggeration and clearly shows how a series of entangled emotions, misunderstandings, and jealousy turned into an irreparable chain reaction. However, one thing that the documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson does well is that it manages to steer clear of sensationalising the issue. The movie does not attempt to paint the entire story as something that went “wrong with the love triangle.” Instead, it brings up some disturbing concerns about personal responsibility and the aftermath of unresolved personal issues.

One of the key strengths of the documentary lies in the way it employs interviews. The Moriah family, particularly her parents, convey a lot through their emotions in the documentary. There is a feeling of grief, but they try hard not to allow the tragedy of their daughter’s life to overshadow the celebration of her existence. At times, the viewer can hear the cracks in their voice, and there is also a lot that remains unspoken in the pauses between words.

In addition, the documentary contains investigation footage, interrogation excerpts, and information about surveillance. This makes the case look like a cohesive story told with the help of the facts provided by the authorities who worked on the case. Though it successfully highlights many aspects of Moriah’s character, there still may be some instances of a lack of focus on her professional success stories.

Since a novice viewer can easily miss something, it is fair to assume that the documentary may appear to be somewhat inadequate in demonstrating Moriah’s outstanding skills within the sphere of bicycle riding. Her victories, her competitiveness, and the growth of her popularity among athletes are mentioned, yet they could be covered in much more detail. There arises an impression that while getting to know Moriah as a person, one cannot understand the extent of loss for the sport.

As far as the coverage of people related to the story, the film manages to avoid going into unnecessary detail about the personality of Kaitlin Armstrong, focusing on the evidence and actions instead. While this approach allows respecting the memory of Moriah to a great extent, it is not quite complete.

The transition back to remembrance in the conclusion is something that I really appreciate. We get to see the ways in which Moriah’s family members have kept her memory alive by continuing her work or simply keeping her memories alive in their minds. This makes for an interesting conclusion, being both a heartwarming and sad one at the same time.

Netflix The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson Review: Summing Up

In the end, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson documentary serves as a haunting reminder of how vulnerable one’s life can be, even when they are standing on the threshold of success. Although the film may not cover all aspects associated with Moriah’s professional achievements, her psychological well-being, or the details of the crime, what truly matters is its ability to remember and respect Moriah. This is a subtle and profound documentary, which makes viewers feel the tragedy of her death and, at the same time, her beauty and the uniqueness of her soul.
