Why Did the Caller Want Maia to Kill Radien Tafa?
The reason why The Caller needed Maia to get rid of Radien Tafa is that Tafa is an essential witness in the criminal proceeding against South London organised crime figure Tommy Boyd. Tafa used to work for Boyd and was going to testify against him, making his testimony very significant in prosecuting him. Moreover, Maia was the one who was directly involved in convincing Tafa to work for the government. This made her a perfect choice to threaten.
The death of Tafa prior to the court proceedings could make Boyd not guilty of what he was charged with. However, it is necessary for the Caller not only to get a person who will have a chance to contact Tafa but also to threaten this person with some serious danger. In this case, he kidnaps Maia’s son Noah and uses his medical problem as the threat.
It turns out that Noah is diabetic, and the Caller gives the boy excessive doses of insulin, which leaves Noah in a life-threatening hypoglycemic state. Maia is offered a little bit of time to contact her son and give him a glucagon injection; in case of failure, the second dose of insulin can lead to Noah’s death. Thus, Maia is left with an impossible dilemma – to murder an innocent person or to refuse and let her son die.
Did Maia Really Kill Radien Tafa?
No, Maia did not kill Radien Tafa at all. Even though the Caller sees through Maia’s phone as Maia enters the room of Radien Tafa and shoots him several times, the whole process is a well-thought-out illusion. Maia had been able to contact Ted even before the Caller got to know about it. Maia secretly conveyed messages to prepare blank rounds and fake blood packs, with Tafa himself wearing blood packs under his clothes. This helped Maia perform the act of shooting without hurting him in any way.
The trickiness was that Maia had to create the illusion in the presence of the Caller, who thought that he was observing everything. Before this, Maia used random people to send a message to Ted and even left a second message about the fake blood and bullets. After arriving at the hotel, Maia exchanged real bullets for blanks and attacked Tafa. She made the fake blood splatter all around, and it looked as if she had committed the murder. At the end of The Runner, The Caller saw this and gave Noah’s location to her, but only after he realised that Tafa was still alive did he understand that Maia had fooled him all the time.
Did Maia Kill Her Father?
The movie never gives a clear answer regarding the question of whether Maia had really killed her father, which seems to be deliberate. In order to restore the faith of the Caller in herself, Maia confesses that she had killed people before. Her father is presented to us as a violent person who often abused her mother and was even seen by Maia with his hands stained with the blood of her mother. In the story, she confesses that she threatened him with a gun and shot him when he did not believe she could shoot him.
She says that her mother then took responsibility for the murder so Maia could have a chance at a normal life. But at the end of The Runner movie, Maia admits that she knows precisely what the Caller was looking for. She basically says that she knew how to give the sort of story that lawyers tend to tell to manipulate one’s perception and win their trust.
There are only two possible options here: either she told the truth about her childhood, or she made it all up because she understood that talking about something so awful would make the Caller believe that she was capable of killing Tafa. The film does not provide an answer to that question. Even if Maia really killed her father in the past, her actions in the present prove that she does not want to turn into that killer anymore.
Was Maia Able to Save Her Son Noah at The End of The Runner?
Yes, in the ending of The Runner we see Maia manages to save Noah. After convincing the Caller that she has managed to kill Tafa, she learns where Noah is hiding at the hotel. Then the Caller activates the alarm, and the panic breaks loose, which forces Maia to fight her way through the evacuation process and save Noah within the set time. She ends up reaching room 5916 and discovers Noah lying unconscious in his bed.
Since he had been intentionally placed into a hypoglycaemic coma by administering extra doses of insulin to him, Maia administers the glucagon shot in order to save him from death. For a minute, it seems that Maia has come too late, but then Noah regains consciousness. Maia’s triumph is further validated by the time that both Maia and Noah exit the room. The Caller feels that he has accomplished his mission since he has witnessed what seems like the death of Tafa, and he was able to convince Maia to follow his orders.
However, keeping Noah safe was not the only objective of Maia. In fact, she had ensured the survival of Tafa as well, and she had already brought Ted and others into the plan without making the Caller aware of it. Noah is later able to recognise the Caller masquerading as a paramedic, and Maia identifies him, and the police are informed.
Who Was the Caller in The Runner?
It is not mentioned who the Caller is, and there is no specific background provided for the Caller. What the movie tells us is that the Runner is an expert hired specifically for the job on Radien Tafa. In addition, his behaviour implies that he has some relationship with the criminal gang surrounding Tommy Boyd, but it is never stated what the nature of their relationship is.
What is known about him is that he is well-versed in technology and is capable of tracking Maia’s movements through her cell phone. The Caller claims that he has been employed by somebody for the task, and his aim is ultimately related to getting rid of Tafa, who could expose Boyd in court. He also anticipates that Maia may fail in what she is supposed to do and takes along a bomb with which he could get rid of Tafa if his initial scheme fails. However, his main weapon in the film is psychological manipulation.
He analyses Maia’s weaknesses and especially her desperate desire to save her son and thinks that threatening Noah will make her obey him unconditionally. In the end, his self-confidence becomes his undoing. Maia makes him believe that he is in control but, at the same time, implements her own plans, which lead to his being exposed in the end by Noah, who recognises him as a paramedic.
