The Apartment Job Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Jo Yong-won and written by Kim Yoon-young, 아파트 stars Ji Sung as Park Hae-kang and Ha Yoon-kyung as Kang Ha-ri, alongside Moon So-ri, Park Byung-eun, Hwang Hee, Jung Soon-won, and others. The jTBC drama is expected to have 12 episodes.

The Apartment Job Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of The Apartment Job introduced Park Hae-kang, a character whose whole routine involves the collection of debts on behalf of HK Trading & Investment. Nothing about him is usual at all. Before approaching any debtor, he analyses everything about the person’s money, belongings, and life. It is very hard for anybody to trick him. In his vicinity are people who work with him and have faith in his decisions, and one of his frequent customers, a worker from the maintenance office known as Lizard.

On the other hand, the drama features Kang Ha-ri, whose life could not be further removed from that of her peers. Despite having aspirations of becoming an attorney, constant failures in her bar exams have rendered her working in odd jobs merely to earn a living. One day, she gets a job of pretending to be a parent at a school event, followed by some comments regarding improving her acting skills. The most difficult thing in Ha-ri’s life is not pretending to be somebody else in her work but pretending to her own family. Her sister keeps helping her out financially as she still believes that Ha-ri will become a good lawyer someday.

Elsewhere, Hae-kang hikes together with some important men, looking after every hassle in a silent way, while some powerful people just chat about their favours and money. One of them is senior police investigator Son Dae-un, who is an important person due to his connections, and thus, no one likes to provoke him. Hae-kang visits his boss, who is an old man named Park Yong-man, during the conversation, showing that for him, earning money has never been about greed.

A still broader network becomes evident in the course of the story. Politicians, prosecutors, judges, media heads, and rich businessmen come together in private while talking about national politics and hidden ties. An unknown businessman wants a huge amount of money as a membership fee for joining their club, putting tremendous pressure on those who want to become members. Soon, Son Dae-un puts pressure on Hae-kang by asking for ten billion won. When Hae-kang does not meet their expectations, the government investigates HK Trading, arrests several people, and even Park Yong-man gets arrested.

The flashback sheds light on why Hae-kang doesn’t want to give up on Yong-man regardless of everything that happens. Since his gambling addicted father used him as collateral in a loan, Hae-kang never saw himself being treated poorly by Yong-man, who raised him within the business environment and turned out to be his first family. Being desperate to save him, he starts looking for money everywhere. Hae-kang is selling his apartment and his car, collecting money from his creditors and staging a fake marriage after recruiting Ha-ri to marry him.

Although making millions during his wedding, it still does not cover the debts he has accumulated. In the moment of hopelessness, Lizard tells Hae-kang how the funds from apartment maintenance could produce illegal money when controlling the residents’ association. At the end of The Apartment Job Episode 1, Hae-kang does not refuse the proposal instantly; he starts to consider it his only way out.

The Apartment Job Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of The Apartment Job shows Lizard elaborating on how apartment complexes can be sources of gold for dishonest individuals. By diverting large amounts of money that have been saved for repairs over the long term from many people, the corrupt individual will take away these large amounts undetected. Even though Hae-kang does not believe the idea at first, all it takes is a phone call to change his mind.

Political life in the apartment is as much as in national politics. People quarrel about the landscaping and other decisions, and rumours fly fast between neighbours. There is one person who gets everybody angry because he is breaking down the young trees, planted recently, and some women decide to replace the president of the residents’ association with a man who would know something about families. However, another plot shows that Ha-ri’s older sister is under threat of quitting her second job.

When Hae-kang comes to know of the financial offences committed by Lizard, he begins to think of all that he has learnt in his lifetime. When he sees Yong-man in jail, he recalls the loyalty that both of them have shared with each other for many years, which includes the time when Yong-man freed him from their bond. All of these memories help him make up his mind to help this man who had given him another opportunity. Not long after he comes back from visiting his old friend, he is confronted with a parking incident involving Lee Chung-won.

However, Ha-ri also has her misfortunes. Continuing in her role as a volunteer legal advisor, she finds herself facing a person who is charged with sexual harassment, and who does not accept that he was at fault for his actions. Defending herself ultimately causes her to lose her job due to being criticised for having no paying clients. In a state of defeat and uncertainty, she once again encounters Hae-kang.

This demand proves to be much larger than what she had anticipated. Hae-kang requests Ha-ri to pretend that she is his wife for three months at a very high price of one hundred million won. She agrees to his demands, seeing how much good that money would do to both of them. Hae-kang then gathers his entire fabricated family, making Lizard impersonate his father while making one of his associates’ sons pretend to be part of their family.  At the end of The Apartment Job episode 2, everyone gathers together, and the new family gets photographed before embarking on their plan, which can save or destroy their people depending on its outcome.

The Apartment Job Episode 1-2 Review

However, the first couple of episodes of The Apartment Job Korean drama are not an explosive start, but personally, I liked that. Without diving headlong into the plan of the apartment fraud, the story focuses on the reasons why Park Hae-kang is prepared to violate another ethical code and why Ha-ri agreed to join such an unbelievable enterprise. The political background, the corruption of influential people, and Hae-kang’s devotion to Yong-man make the story quite serious instead of just an ordinary comedy about a scam. Moreover, the mock marriage and a fake family are entertaining enough.

Ji Sung is the star who holds this show together with incredible grace. Hae-kang is intelligent, composed, and always at least a few steps ahead, but underneath that confident exterior is an emotional fragility which makes him impossible not to root for. In a similar way, Ha Yoon-kyung is wonderful in her role as Ha-ri, always playing her parts with great comedic timing and reaction, and without ever overdoing any of it.

What is even more special about her performances with her sister is the fact that they remind you that all the deception is hiding someone weighed down by years of regret and disappointment. Park Byung-eun is also immediately noticeable in his part as Lee Chung-won, and although he doesn’t have much screen time, his calm and menacing demeanour makes him one of the characters to watch out for.

The last segment of K-drama The Apartment Job Episode 2, by far, is the best segment to date. It is fun and even somewhat satisfying to see Hae-kang put together his false family member by member. Whether it is convincing Ha-ri to be his wife or finding a false dad and kid, everything is building up towards the main theme of the drama. The scene where the family picture was taken perfectly sums up the quirkiness of the drama.

The Apartment Job Review: Summing Up

The one thing that bothers me about The Apartment Job series is that at times, the first two episodes go on a little bit too long, setting up the political framework and business dealings before getting into the plot. Nevertheless, once everything is set, I feel like the show is finally going to give me all that it had promised. It will be very interesting to watch how this scam plays out now that the fake family has been created and the apartment elections are coming up soon.
