Still Shining Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Kim Yoon-jin and written by Lee Sook-yun, 샤이닝 stars Park Jin-young as Yeon Tae-seo and Kim Min-ju as Mo Eun-a. They are joined by Shin Jae-ha as Bae Seong-chan and Park Se-hyun as Im A-sol, along with several supporting actors. The drama has 10 episodes, releasing two episodes every Friday. The drama is an emotional story about young people trying to find hope after difficult circumstances.
Still Shining Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Still Shining begins with Yeon Tae-seo returning to his grandparents’ rural hometown with his younger brother after a devastating car accident that killed their parents. The tragedy also left his brother with a serious leg injury, forcing him to use crutches. Because of this, Tae-seo feels a heavy responsibility to take care of his family and focuses entirely on his studies so he can build a stable future.
After transferring to the local school, Tae-seo spends most of his time studying in the library during summer break. There, he meets Mo Eun-a, a lively girl who also uses the library to prepare for her own future. At first, Tae-seo is slightly irritated by her talkative personality, as he prefers silence and discipline while studying.
As the days pass, the two begin interacting more frequently and gradually become comfortable around each other. Eun-a reveals that she actually knows Tae-seo’s family and used to spend time with his younger brother years ago. This memory helps Tae-seo recognise her, and their awkward relationship slowly turns into a genuine friendship.
Eun-a also opens up about her life. She moved to the town years ago with her father after he went through a difficult divorce and depression. Now that he has started seeing someone again, she hopes their lives will finally improve. Spending time with Tae-seo becomes comforting for her, and she eventually admits that she has begun to develop feelings for him.
Her confession leaves Tae-seo unsure how to react, and he begins avoiding her. However, after both experience emotional moments during a trip to Seoul, Tae-seo realises how important she has become in his life. By the end of Still Shining Episode 1, when they return to their hometown together, he reaches out to her, holding her hand and suggesting that they face the future side by side.
Still Shining Episode 2 Recap
Still Shining Episode 2 continues with Tae-seo and Eun-a’s relationship developing as they study for their college entrance exams. They spend their days studying and motivating each other to stay focused. It is not until they face the exams together, going into the testing location hand-in-hand, that they decide to push their dreams to fruition.
After the exams, they spend their time in Seoul, creating moments that make their relationship stronger. These moments create hope for their relationship, even as the world around them continues to change. When the results come out, both Tae-seo and Eun-a pass with flying colours. Tae-seo gets into Hankuk University in Seoul, while Eun-a attends a university farther away.
Eun-a’s life at home is not as smooth as she finds out that her father is planning to marry the woman he has been dating. Having previously caught the woman with another man, Eun-a does not trust her and decides to confront her. The woman claims that Eun-a’s father knows everything and that she is going to make things right, but Eun-a does not feel comfortable with the situation.
Eun-a decides not to hurt her father by being around and therefore decides to support the marriage, despite her doubts. However, the situation proves to be too much for her, and she decides to reach out to Tae-seo to meet up with her. Episode 2 of Still Shining ends with Eun-a waiting at the metro station, feeling relieved as the train carrying Tae-seo pulls in, knowing she does not have to go through this alone.
Still Shining Episode 1-2 Review
I really enjoyed the first two episodes of the Still Shining kdrama. The fact that the story does not advance too quickly allows for a more realistic portrayal of the characters and their struggles. The development of the relationship between Tae-seo and Eun-a is also realistic as the scenes are quiet and not too overbearing, given the fact that both are going through difficult situations.
What I think was the best part of the series was the fact that the two leads are very different from each other as individuals. Tae-seo is more reserved and serious due to the fact that he has a lot on his plate following the death of his parents, while Eun-a is more expressive and emotional. The fact that she was able to change Tae-seo’s demeanour and make him more comfortable around people is a nice touch. Netflix’s Still Shining kdrama also does not forget to portray the struggles of the leads as individuals. Tae-seo’s struggles add more depth to the character, while Eun-a’s struggles add more depth to the character as well.
One of the best aspects of the series is the fact that the actors are able to portray the characters so well. Park Jin-young does a great job as Tae-seo, as the character does not open up too easily about his feelings. Kim Min-ju is also wonderful as Eun-a, as the character is lively and full of charm, especially when she opens up about her feelings.
Kdrama Still Shining Review: Summing Up
Overall, Still Shining Episode 1-2 makes a strong first impression. The pace is gentle and moving, and the performances of the main actors are quite convincing. Considering that the story is just beginning, I am interested to find out the progression of the relationship between Tae-seo and Eun-a, and the challenges they face in the upcoming episodes.
