Planet Single: Greek Adventure Review: Directed by Sam Akina and Michal Chacinski, Planeta Singli 4: Wyspa is the latest instalment of the hit Polish romantic comedy show. The film has a star-studded cast headed by Agnieszka Wiedlocha, Piotr Glowacki, Maciej Stuhr, Weronika Ksiazkiewicz, Tomasz Karolak, Dorota Kolak, Nikodem Rozbicki, Kamil Kula, Malgorzata Mikolajczak, Mateusz Dymidziuk and others.

Planet Single: Greek Adventure Review

The film takes us to a beautiful Greek island, where friends have come to spend a worry-free vacation that couldn’t possibly have been made more complicated. But when things come out of the closet and suspicion turns into intrigue, relationships become strained, and the characters have to relearn love, trust, and second chances. Although the landscape is pleasant and the movie has amusing and sentimental moments, Planet Single: Greek Adventure has issues with pacing and predictability. However, for rom-com fans, it’s a light, comfortable watching experience that does engage, if not to the same extent as other Planeta Singli movies.

The film opens with Tomek Wilczynski and his wife Ania arriving at a luxury hotel in Greece, looking to enjoy a long-overdue break from work with friends. All is not as it should be, though, since Tomek is facing difficulties in maintaining his flailing career, but also with the burden of having his own family. Drama soon arrives as their friend Marcel invites his much-younger boyfriend Miguel, whose intentions Tomek automatically suspects. From there, a mix of comedy, misunderstandings, and emotional struggles drives the plot.

What I like about this is how the movie plays around with the theme of relationships in the present day—the conflict between appearance and reality, trust and suspicion. Having the setting of a Greek vacation is tempting, and the chemistry between the cast is attractive. There are a number of pretty amusing moments, particularly during Tomek’s paranoid efforts to expose Miguel.

But the situation does come across as slightly recycled. If you’ve seen other films or series or romantic comedies in general, then you may well be able to guess what’s coming around the bend. The “is he cheating or not?” moment is a bit of a letdown, and sometimes the film is overly reliant on clichés.

Even with the familiar storyline, the performances are a high point. Tomek is performed by Piotr Glowacki, who infuses the film with go-go vitality and comedic sense to keep things moving. His mix of insecurity, jealousy, and real concern for his buddy is both funny and credible. Agnieszka Wiedlocha, as Ania, provides a mix of warmth and maturity to ground the story when it gets too far out.

The supporting cast performs too—especially Maciej Stuhr as Marcel, whose vulnerability makes his relationship with Miguel more tragic than expected. Even when the script is not that great, the actors are still compelling. For me, this was one of the better aspects of the film. The cast clearly has a good time in these roles, and the chemistry is what drives the film most of the way.

There are a number of reasons why I believe the film remains worth viewing. One, the comedy—while not fresh or groundbreaking—does pay dividends in the majority of scenes. Bogdan’s hare-brained conspiracy theories and Tomek’s crazy suspicions provide some comic moments. Two, the emotional journeys, especially between Tomek and Ania, give depth to the story. Their attempts at having a baby are dealt with sensitively, and it brings an adult touch to what otherwise might have been another frothy rom-com.

And, of course, the location is a big winner. The Greek island locale offers a celebratory, holiday-like atmosphere for the film. The bright action, sun-scorched beaches, and hotel lobbies are sufficient to render it watchable even when the plot flags. For audience members seeking a light Netflix feature, the destination itself renders the Planet Single: Greek Adventure movie an enjoyable detour.

But then, again, the movie plays it too cautiously. The twists related to Miguel’s history and the “Planet Bandit” conspiracy never feel suspenseful. You know where it’s going way ahead of the characters do. That detracts from some of the tension the film attempts to build.

One of its downsides is the pace. At 1 hour 40 minutes, it’s not too bad, but parts are drawn out. Some subplots—such as Maria’s affair or the paranoid conspiracies—are drawn out and dilute the overall effect. I couldn’t help but want the story to be tighter and more compact.

Being a light romantic comedy fan, I didn’t regret watching Netflix’s Planet Single: Greek Adventure. It’s not a masterpiece, but neither is it a waste of time either. It provides laughs, some drama, and a lovely Greek island to dream of escaping to—all without requiring much effort on the part of the viewer.

Netflix Planet Single: Greek Adventure Review: Summing Up

Planet Single Greek Adventure is a cheerful, sometimes amusing, sometimes sentimental love story that is best seen once. It’s imperfect—predictable, unevenly paced, and riddled with a variety of tried-and-true clichés—but with the help of good performances and the rich Greek environment, it never becomes dull.
