His final hope is an overseas clinical trial, an experimental and high-risk protocol that doesn’t come with any kind of guarantee that he’ll survive.
Throughout the drama, Hae’s sickness was never merely physiological but indicative of his paralysis on an emotional level. He feared dying and hence feared life, becoming a burden to others, and being perceived as weak. When his family and his step-daughter Je-yeon come to him at the hospital, the reality is finally laid bare: he has kept people away from him for twenty years to not hurt them. And now, with Yu-ri and Seok-ju clinging to him, he discovers that love and not loneliness has prolonged his life.
Ultimately, Hae resolves to seek medical care outside the country, not because he believes in the miraculous cure that can never be, but because he owes it to the people still believing in him.
