Merry Berry Love Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Merry Berry Love starts off in the sweet potato farm of Karin, located in Charo Island, Japan. Karin is engrossed in her agricultural activities and tries to persuade her tired colleague, Daniel, to continue. But he has had enough and declares that more people are needed on the farm. It is quite evident from the outset that while Karin is a determined person, it is getting more and more difficult for her to manage things in her business.
Meanwhile, in South Korea, Lee Yu-bin experiences an entirely different day. As the CEO of the design firm named Y Space, he is present in the preparations for opening up the designs of Monea, one of his clients who has brought him laurels. He demands everything be done according to his designs, even if it means criticising the lighting of tables. Yu-bin’s business partner, Kim Bong-su, who happens to be his long-time friend, persuades him not to worry so much about business matters. Yet, Yu-bin cannot help but think about their next big project.
Bong-su informs him about an official notification regarding a piece of land in Japan which was owned by Yu-bin’s father and has become an inheritance for him. The situation appears to be unimportant until Bong-su commits betrayal and runs away with the money of their new customers, leaving Yu-bin with the problem. Being charged with fraud due to his connection with his partner, Yu-bin loses all his business and even has to sell his office. But his accountant, Choi Hye-jin, reminds him that he still has one chance left, since the inheritance in Japan might be worth quite a lot.

On the other hand, Karin is trying to have her strawberries certified at Green Nova Corporation. She has been trying to make it happen for three years, but this time, she wants it to happen for sure. Her strawberries have to satisfy some criteria concerning quantity, looks and taste. It means that losing the certificate will lead to losing help as well. At the ferry terminal, Karin and Yu-bin find themselves in a situation where the last ticket for getting on board the boat to Charo Island is available.
They fight for it, but finally, they decide to determine the winner using a game of rock-paper-scissors. Karin wins, but when she sees that Daniel leaves with his luggage, she starts to beg him not to leave. Yu-bin uses the opportunity and goes on board the ferry. A small meeting with a child having something sweet makes him remember his father, who used to work in Japan and leave his little son again and again.
Karin’s job-seeking efforts keep disappointing her as the recruiter makes her understand that no one wants to work on the island. She finally convinces the agent to help her. After an encounter with Mizuno Mari, who tells her about kissing Daniel the night before, Karin finds out that Daniel has gone ahead. Yu-bin comes to Charo Island but immediately gets lost in the new environment.

On account of his mistake of misreading the intentions of the local driver, he quits the car and his luggage and continues to walk to the village office. There he gets to know that Karin is residing on the property he has inherited from his father. Also, he meets Park Ku-nam, a Korean man, who at first denies being Korean. Merry Berry Love Episode 1 ends with the arrival of Karin and Mari on the island. Ku-nam tells Karin that there is somebody waiting for her at her farm, and she returns immediately to find out what it is all about.
On reaching the farm, Yu-bin realises that he is surrounded by school children and their teachers. They have misunderstood the fact that he is not conversant with the Japanese language and taken it to be his permission to pick the strawberries. Yu-bin finds himself surrounded by a messed-up farm after the children leave. He is eating the only remaining strawberry from the damaged garden when Karin shows up. Seeing this makes her so angry that she collapses before him.

Merry Berry Love Episode 2 Recap
Merry Berry Love Episode 2 begins after the conflict between Karin and Yu-bin. Karin is certain that Yu-bin is trespassing her land and ruining her strawberry garden that she takes care of, whereas Yu-bin is sure that it belongs to him. He attempts to justify himself through his inheritance papers, only to find out that these papers do not confirm anything that he thought they would. It is only natural that Karin feels annoyed, especially taking into consideration the years of effort she put into growing her farm. However, even money cannot help fix everything right away.
Yu-bin has problems of his own to handle. Having lost his business, he badly requires cash and hopes of selling the inherited land. His efforts to portray himself as a successful businessman are not helping him much, considering how his profile on the internet shows an unfavourable image of his present situation. Yu-bin tries making friends with the local people, but the excessive familiarity on his part is not always effective. The fact that the potential buyer is unwilling to buy his land forces Yu-bin to see the land around in a different way altogether. Yu-bin understands that the farm of Karin is in a favorable position, which links to the path to the harbor.

It becomes easier to comprehend Karin’s tenacity through this episode as she tries to deal with her connection to the farmland owned by her grandfather. In addition to sustaining herself financially, Karin is trying to realise the dreams of her grandfather and the knowledge he imparted to her regarding how to grow strawberries. A close friend of hers, Xie Qian, is aware of how drained she is because of the strain she has been putting herself through. Karin does not relent, even when it becomes evident that the physically strenuous work of farming is wearing her down. She would not give up simply because the idea of selling the property comes from Yu-bin.
Eventually, Yu-bin works on the farm; however, he expects to face nothing like that. Instead of comfortable housing, Yu-bin has to sleep in a shed and has a complaint not only about his sleeping conditions but also about the amount of food. Karin wants him to work from early morning, and physical effort makes Yu-bin feel extremely tired. After Yu-bin finds out that Karin feels ill and the villagers tried to help her, he realises that Karin’s difficult attitude stems not only from her stubbornness. Yu-bin receives advice to learn Japanese instead of using translation services in every situation. Yu-bin’s Japanese isn’t very good, but it shows that he’s ready to try.

The next day, Yu-bin fails to heed Karin’s advice and lands himself in trouble doing the job in the field. Even though he says he wanted to be helpful, Karin lets him know that it is not the case when one does not heed the words of advice. Their different views are shown when they talk about farming. Yu-bin sees the land as something that can be profitable, but Karin thinks strawberries should develop according to the natural rhythm of the season. She says her grandfather taught her how to value the taste that develops in the fruit through this process.
However, despite their differences, she admits that Yu-bin has tried to put effort into the job, and invites him to eat. This discussion goes on and becomes even more personal when Karin tells Yu-bin about the person who took care of her grandfather during his illness and taught her about farming. At the end of episode 2 of Merry Berry Love, the man’s behaviour has not earned him the respect of this type.

Merry Berry Love Episode 1-2 Review
The first two episodes of Merry Berry Love were full of fun, warmth, and cosiness. Yu-bin and Karin’s first encounter turned out to be a total fiasco, but this is what makes their interaction so fascinating. While one wants to sell the land and sort out his life, the other wants to preserve the dream of her grandfather. Ji Chang-wook and Mio Imada create such an interesting combination, and I can’t wait to see how their relationship will evolve.
Watching Yu-bin fail at farming tasks is simply funny. It is as if he walks into Karin’s place thinking that he will be able to persuade his way out of any situation, only to realise that Karin’s world is not as simple as he thought. Moreover, watching Karin’s dedication towards her strawberries fills me with sympathy for her. Despite being tired, she does not want to stop something she loves. Another thing I liked about this drama was that it gradually revealed some things about Yu-bin apart from his arrogance.

Since Yu-bin and Karin now have to put up with one another, I’m sure there will be lots of fights, uncomfortable situations, and, maybe, some beautiful romantic scenes. Yu-bin and Karin are just starting to find a connection, yet their conflicts pique my interest in seeing how long they will be able to pretend like there is nothing that either one of them can learn from the other one. The relationship between Ku-nam and Mari is also very intriguing.
All good! Merry Berry Love ep 2 was really enjoyable, and the strawberry farm is a beautiful backdrop to a romantic story that proves to be deeper emotionally than what I had anticipated. My only worry is that the misunderstandings between Yu-bin and Karin might prove to be repetitive, but I hope the time spent together will bring out the better qualities in them.

Merry Berry Love Review: Summing Up
Overall, in the Japanese drama Merry Berry Love, the combination of Ji Chang-wook and Mio Imada, the appealing countryside setting, and the conflict around the strawberry farm gives me hope for an enjoyable romantic comedy. However, I really appreciate the fact that there is already an emotional basis for the love between the two leads instead of focusing only on their initial confrontation.

There is much room left for further character development, and Yu-bin needs to do a lot before gaining Karin’s trust. I wonder how working side-by-side affects their different outlooks on things or, conversely, increases the tension between them. Can Yu-bin finally figure out why Karin does not want to sell her land, and can Karin look beyond his arrogant attitude to the man he is? I definitely approve of the rom-com. What I want to see now is Yu-bin starting to understand Karin better, Karin giving him a chance, and their arguments becoming something more.
