Crystal Lake Review: Developed and showrun by Brad Caleb Kane, with episodes directed by Logan George, Celine Held, Michael Lennox and Quyen Tran. Peacock’s horror series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, Callum Vinson as young Jason Voorhees, Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace Snell, Danielle Kotch as Claudette, Phoenix Parnevik as Barry, Bernadette Quigley as Trudy, Daniel Stewart as Sherman Enos and Joy Suprano as Rita, alongside William Catlett, Devin Kessler and Cameron Scoggins. Serving as a prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, the series has eight episodes, each with a runtime of 50-60 minutes.

Crystal Lake Review

Peacock’s Crystal Lake revolves around Pamela Voorhees, who tries to provide her son, Jason, with a regular life despite all the torture he endures because of his physical appearance and his gentle character. The only girl who becomes friends with Jason is Grace, and their friendship gives Jason some comfort in the face of hostility that he encounters all the time.

Unfortunately, an accident occurs at the lake where Jason drowns due to the negligence of those who were supposed to look after him. Almost a year passes since his disappearance, and his mother still does not accept the fact of losing her son. She still has hopes that she can find him alive. Two men who come to her house pretending to be state police officers and asking about Jason make Pam reveal her darkest secrets.

From the very beginning, I’ve had the belief that the perfect horror story demands more than the mere accumulation of people being chased by an entity. There is a far greater impact when there are things at stake for these individuals, and the decisions made will get the viewer engaged and interested in the fate of these characters. Peacock series Crystal Lake seems to understand this better than one would expect. Sure, this series offers us blood, brutal killing, and scenes that might make even a veteran horror fan uncomfortable. But what really captivates viewers is the story of Pamela Voorhees.

It is just as Halloween that I feel this could be one of the series that should definitely be added to your list of things to watch. It captures the essence of Friday the 13th but offers something different in terms of its mythological approach. What caught my eye was the manner in which the story allows us to know about these characters before knowing the scary nature of their lives. It is easier to feel horrified with a deeper understanding of the context and people around.

The character of Pam would have to be my main reason why I enjoy this Peacock Crystal Lake series. The role of Pam is played by Linda Cardellini, and her performance is amazing because she manages to combine a loving mother, a desperate, angry, and unstable person without turning Pam into a caricature of a horror villain. The bond between Pam and Jason is crucial because it is evident how much she wants to save him from a world that has made him feel unwanted time and again. Pam is not presented as someone who was doomed to become a murderer right from the start.

What is especially compelling about Pam’s storyline is that the sadness and tragedy she experiences is not separate from the violence she is surrounded by but begins to define her perception of the world around her and the way she reacts to it. The more I learn about Pam, the more complex my feelings about her get. I am able to empathise with her and her suffering but do not condone her actions, which makes her an interesting character.

The relevance of Jason is not limited by the amount of screen time he spends throughout the movie. Friendship of Jason with Grace and the tormenting actions of other kids on him help create a sense of vulnerability in the mythology of the franchise. It was great to see the franchise allowing us to witness a side of Jason where he craves love and acceptance instead of portraying him as the person known to horror enthusiasts. The innocence of Grace and how different Jason’s life could have been if more people cared about him makes the scene even more heartwarming.

Other characters are also very useful for making the series Crystal Lake seem like a location to explore. The coming of the supposed police officers is an efficient means of creating a mystery surrounding Pam, while the town’s connections, secrets, and uneasiness add even more depth to the plot. I really liked the way the narration allows the readers to be suspicious without giving away all the answers right away. There is something psychological about this investigation that adds depth to the plot as compared to your usual slasher stories.

However, it would be foolish to ignore the reason why people are watching. There is a lot of gore in the series, as well as great use of practical special effects and makeup, and there are some scenes which are truly nauseating. Personally, I liked the fact that most of the time the violence is justified by the plot, and not used just to scare people. It should be mentioned that the direction deserves praise for creating such a creepy setting as the forest and lake. The other point is the 1970s period setting, which adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Peacock Crystal Lake Review: Summing Up

Overall, the 2026 Crystal Lake series was a wonderful experience for me to watch. The show gives me the feeling of Friday the 13th with the addition of character development that allows the plot to be somewhat unique from the usual slasher genre. Although there are some shortcomings, the show still provides the thrills, gore, and atmosphere that a horror show should have. As Halloween is coming up soon, this is one of my best suggestions for horror fans.
