Su-jong is trying to keep up a brave face for his family, but the truth is much tougher. He is barely managing, with a hidden sideline as a delivery man, while also having to deal with the needs of the tenants in his building.

The situation spins out of control when Su-jong arrives at a group of teens with a tray of food and suddenly recognises one of the teens as his daughter’s friend. In order to avoid the awkward situation, he ends up paying everyone’s bill. That night, at Kim Seon’s birthday party, the chaos continues. The inquiry proves fatal when Kim Gyun is knocked down and killed by a truck.

The kidnapping plot moves a little forward as Su-jong changes his tone when talking to I-gyeong’s mother, showing that she is indeed being held hostage. He demands an astronomical amount of ransom money, three billion won. Meanwhile, his money problems continue to worsen as more notices from Real Capital and Global Partners arrive.

However, things get complicated when it is time to make the ransom exchange. The kidnappers are not aware that I-gyeong’s mother sneaked away to alert the authorities, who arrive just in time to make a mess of their plan. At this bridge, Hwal-seong continues with his rescue plan for his wife, but things get precarious for him. He loses his footing and falls from the bridge in the process. Mad Concrete Dreams episode 2 ends with Su-jong barely escaping the mess that is happening around him as everything crumbles around him.

Mad Concrete Dreams Episode 1-2 Review

The first two episodes of Mad Concrete Dreams kdrama draw you into the struggles of Su-jong’s life as a landlord just trying to get by, with Real Capital on his tail and the constant threat of losing the Seyun Building hanging over his head. But then the sudden death of detective Kim Gyun turns the tone on its head and introduces a sense of foreboding that the loan company has some very bad people behind it. Even so, the struggle that Su-jong faces as a human being, particularly in his interactions with his wife and daughter, keeps the story from becoming too unbelievable.

What lends these moments their tangible weight is the way the kidnapping plot develops at its own glacier-paced speed. Su-jong and Hwal-seong find themselves in a tense, uneasy alliance, never quite sure who’s at the helm and how far they’ll diverge. The ransom exchange goes awry, followed by Hwal-seong’s tumble off the bridge, and the whole thing spirals out of control from dicey plot twist to full-blown disaster. By the end of the second episode, Su-jong is no longer just a man in debt; he’s been pulled into a plot that spirals increasingly out of his control.

The impact of the story is real, and it is mostly due to the fact that Ha Jung-woo is so fully invested in the role of Su-jong. You can feel his desperation as he struggles to protect his family as the world around him falls apart. His meltdown in front of his wife and daughter is especially painful and vulnerable, and it is even more so when you consider the darker, more illicit elements that are at work in the story.

With these two segments of the narrative, the Mad Concrete Dreams series manages to craft a compelling balance of tension and emotion. Su-jong finds himself in a position where he teeters on the edge of outcomes he never wanted to face, while the unseen influence of Real Capital remains in the background. It all makes the wait for what comes next unbearable.
