In Your Radiant Season Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Park Seon-ho and Jung Sang-hee, 찬란한 너의 계절에 stars Lee Sung-kyung as Song Ha-ran, a designer whose initial warmth has been tempered by loss. Chae Jong-hyeop portrays Sunwoo Chan, a man whose gentle smile conceals hidden pain. Seasoned actress Lee Mi-sook brings weight as Kim Na-na (or Kim Na-bong), the strong-willed matriarch of Nana Atelier, while Han Ji-hyeon portrays Ha-ran’s perceptive younger sister, Song Ha-yeong.

In Your Radiant Season Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of In Your Radiant Season begins with a long-distance romance at the centre of the story. Ha-ran, a bright and talented designer, has a sweet relationship with Kang Hyeok-chan, who is studying in Boston. Her bright personality contrasts sharply with the serious, almost sombre mood surrounding Hyeok-chan. A small, significant gift—a pen inscribed with her name—symbolises their artistic and emotional connection, foreshadowing her future success.

When Ha-ran wins a major design award, she decides to surprise Hyeok-chan on a brief holiday. She records a happy video message to share with him, all excitement and anticipation. But disaster looms: a devastating explosion rocks his university lab just before they can meet. By the time she arrives at the campus, the worst has already happened, and she is faced with the crushing news of Hyeok-chan’s death.

Seven years have lapsed. Ha-ran is now a shadow of her former self, her warmth extinguished, her heart protected by a shield of suspicion against ever loving again. Having experienced the loss of her parents at a young age, she guards her heart fiercely. She remains a star designer at her grandmother’s Nana Atelier, succeeding in her career while keeping everyone at arm’s length in her personal life.

Sunwoo Chan, ex-roommate of Hyeok-chan, returns to South Korea for a combined project. The explosion has given him burn scars, some hearing loss, and a shattered memory fabric. However, one strand remains vibrant: Ha-ran’s voice and her shining presence. Before they can actually meet, he brushes against her twice—first at an art exhibition, then outside, where he automatically calls out her name to drag her away from falling rubble. She hears him, but can’t quite see him clearly.

At the end of In Your Radiant Season episode 1, Chan enters a work conference at Nana Atelier for a fashion-animation collaboration. Meeting Ha-ran in the flesh, he’s clearly shaken. Ha-ran doesn’t remember him. The seed of doubt is planted when mysterious photos of her begin to appear—she wonders if Chan might be stalking her. But a sudden and dramatic plot twist occurs: a flashback reveals that the man Ha-ran had once said “I love you” to was actually Kang Hyeok-chan, not Sunwoo Chan.

In Your Radiant Season Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of In Your Radiant Season features an exploration of the complex nature of human relationships through misunderstandings and unresolved trauma. After having suspicions that Sunwoo Chan, a coworker, is secretly taking photographs of her, Ha-ran publicly confronts Sunwoo Chan. Sunwoo remains calm and explains that he has only discovered her name through work channels, but Ha-ran is unable to fully accept this explanation due to fear and a guarded heart.

Eventually, Sunwoo reveals the true identity of the person who has been taking photographs of Ha-ran, an ex-employee, resentful of Ha-ran. Sunwoo Chan and Ha-ran capture the photographer and take her to the police, although Ha-ran decides not to file charges against the individual. Their resolve to work together increases their trust and goodwill toward one another; however, there are still many barriers remaining between them.

Nana Kim recognises Ha-ran’s habit of mentioning Sunwoo Chan as an opportunity to bring Ha-ran and Sunwoo Chan closer together and decides to invite Ha-ran to dinner with the hope of igniting a romantic spark between the two. Ha-ran agrees, partly as a thank-you to Sunwoo Chan for rescuing her from the last disaster. However, during the dinner, Sunwoo Chan suffers a panic attack triggered by the noise, which reminds him of his explosion trauma. Amidst the chaos, Ha-ran loses her engraved pen, which symbolises her memories of Hyeok-chan and her award-winning design.

The frantic search for the pen demonstrates how much Ha-ran is holding on to the past. When Chan calls it “just a pen,” Ha-ran goes ballistic, unable to distinguish between the pen and her pain. Later, reflecting on Ha-ran’s unwitting emotional rescue of him all those years ago, Chan makes a personal promise to himself: he wants to help Ha-ran regain the light that once shone in her life.

At the end of the episode, Chan apologises for his earlier tactlessness and announces that he will be staying in Korea for three months. He gently asks to walk alongside her, to help her regain the softness that once colored her life. His genuine confession leaves Ha-ran momentarily speechless, and the episode ends on a very tender note.

In Your Radiant Season Episode 1-2 Review

Korean drama In Your Radiant Season takes off with a strong emotional premise built around loss, longing, and second chances. The foundation of the series is generally built upon the grief that never leaves, as well as a bond between people that defies the distance of time. During its first two episodes, there is an exploration of how the two leads, bonded by tragedy, find themselves in each other’s orbit years later with a sense of building intensity. Each interaction between the characters is filled with a sense of

meaning and weight due to the unacknowledged past that surrounds their current actions; with Ha-ran, who once had a bright and positive view of life, now being somewhat closed off due to the fact that she has lost many people she has loved. Chan’s entrance into Ha-ran’s life occurs in a somewhat unwilling blaze of warmth, excitement, and hopefulness (as he wants nothing more than to bring a smile to Ha-ran’s face).

Their characters share a push-and-pull dynamic with one another; therefore, they continue to be drawn to one another, even though there may have been barriers between them. This push and pull is what makes it such a classic slow-burn story line, but what is exciting about the storyline is how strongly each of the leads’ emotional burdens is apparent to each other.

At times during the course of the series, an overwhelming sense of tenderness was felt between the two characters. Chan exhibited his affection for Ha-ran through small, sincere gestures: instinctively calling her name, worrying about her health and truly apologising to her without any hint of melodrama. Ha-ran’s response, although at times frustrating to watch, is completely and painfully understandable.

The traumas she has experienced in her life have caused her to view love and loss as one and the same, and at no time does the drama trivialise the fear she has about losing love once again. The heaviness of her grief is evident in every scene, especially in those that involve the engraved pen that holds the memories of love and loss. Both of the lead characters are portrayed as imperfect and human, but nonetheless have a humanity that makes it easy to support their characters throughout the series.

The chemistry between Lee Sung-kyung and Chae Jong-hyeop displays a tender and delicate connection. The scenes between them develop through a slow process which builds up to their climax. A glance lasts a second too long. A misunderstanding continues between two people. A confession almost slips out. The series leans into emotional restraint rather than grand romantic declarations, and for the most part, it works beautifully. The story moves at an extended pace throughout its first half because it spends excessive time showing Ha-ran’s internal conflict, which breaks the story’s progress. The emotional weight succeeds in creating an impact, but there are times when viewers wish the story would progress at a faster pace.
