First Lady Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Lee Ho-hyun and written by Kim Hyung-wan, the new political melodrama 퍼스트레이디 began strongly by intertwining family strife, aspirations, and schmaltzy drama through the context of Korea’s highest status. Eugene stars as Cha Soo-yeon, whose dreams of becoming the First Lady move her into risky compromises. Ji Hyun-woo is Hyun Min-cheol, her husband and rising star politician, whose personal wants are met with resistance by his public responsibilities. The drama also stars Lee Min-young as Sin Hae-rin and Han Su-a, Lee Si-kang, Park Seo-kyung and others.
First Lady Episode 1 Recap
The kdrama First Lady starts out with one creepy image: A young child slipping into large red heels in front of a blood-stained television set. That eerie moment foreshadows one heck of a tale about ambition, sacrifice, and betrayal.
In the present time frame, Soo-yeon and her husband, Min-cheol, head off to a contentious labour strike. The car is quiet until Min-cheol explains why his wife never tried stopping him from running for politics. Soo-yeon’s reply is deliberate—she knows that he would have done it despite himself anyway, but she asks him to always remember their daughter before arriving at conclusions. Their conversation is suddenly cut off by chaos as fire breaks out in the middle of the protest. Soo-yeon escapes safely, but Min-cheol is severely hurt. Even though saved by medics, the injury left him temporarily paralysed from the waist downwards.
With indomitable willpower, Soo-yeon assists in getting her husband’s public image rebuilt. Through her diligent planning and strong exhortation, Min-cheol reaches greater altitudes in politics and ultimately finds himself elected to the National Assembly. The time frame skips ahead to 2025, where Min-cheol is currently in contention for president. On election day for one pivotal broadcast, he disappears for one brief moment and is observed standing outside one of these morgues, mourning in silence over a deceased body whose name is unknown.
He then goes on air, looking back over his own past and his love for Soo-yeon. Despite his talk, though, fault lines in their marriage are apparent. Soo-yeon herself looks to her future as a would-be First Lady. With her chic style and impeccable public image, Soo-yeon is all charm and possesses something of underlying steel. Her cutting edge is revealed when dealing with Hwa-jin, cautioning her to keep away from things—and persons—that belong to her.
Min-cheol wins the presidency, securing Soo-yeon’s long-awaited title as First Lady. However, flashbacks reveal that her ambition overshadowed her concern for his infidelity, suggesting that the woman Min-cheol mourned earlier may have been his mistress. Their celebratory image as a power couple is soon tainted when a protester accuses them of orchestrating a man’s death for political gain.
Episode 1 of First Lady ends in shock. After this public exhibition of conjugal love before all these onlookers, Min-cheol comes over to Soo-yeon one day and whispers in her ear terrible words: he wants to divorce her.
First Lady Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 of First Lady kdrama continues right after Min-cheol won. He is asking for a divorce, and Soo-yeon declines by saying it will ruin their image. Min-cheol retorts that she never once questioned him as to why he would leave her. That question is out of balance.
In other news, Hwa-jin is found spying in Min-cheol’s study and has a fight with Ji-yoo. Their fight spirals out of control, and they tumble downstairs, both women ending up in the hospital. The incident drags Soo-yeon and Min-cheol into yet another explosive fight where past scores are settled after years, especially regarding the fire incident from 15 years ago. Ji-yoo is upset to see her parents fighting and interrogates her father regarding Hwa-jin and her parents’ separation, and is once more left broken-hearted.
Soo-yeon begs him not to move out on behalf of her marriage and social status. Yet Min-cheol holds his ground, suggesting it’s not politics that’s running through his head here, it’s betrayal. Their daughter, torn between both parents, grows cynical herself and insists they break up.
This scenario escalates once more when Soo-yeon injures herself in pursuing Hwa-jin. Then Soo-yeon observes from the shadows as Min-cheol bestows a necklace upon Hwa-jin and assures her everything will work out okay soon. Around the same time, Min-cheol visits the morgue to view Eom Soon-jeong’s corpse and makes comparisons to larger political scandals.
There is turmoil when Soo-yeon divides Min-cheol’s property, and it causes such public furore that it reaches the media. While reporters congregate, Soo-yeon and Ji-yoo make a dash for it, but have a car accident, and the family’s already fractured reputation hangs by a thread.
First Lady Episode 1-2 Review
The crash of Min-cheol and his rise to politics simultaneously set the tone for a drama that thrives upon personal sacrifice and prudent aspiration. Soo-yeon’s insistence upon making her husband into a political hero through dramatic strike sequences illustrates the series’s essential attribute: it publicises private suffering as public drama. While these sequences are dramatic on their own terms, the plot at times runs headlong, one dramatic twist upon another, without quite giving time for feelings fully to develop.
The tense marriage between Soo-yeon and Min-cheol offers the emotional core for these initial episodes. His muttering insistence upon divorce at the end of episode 1 has an effect both through shock value and through fault lines already here between them. Episode 2 escalates melodrama with hospital confrontations, family strife, and Hwa-jin’s malevolent influence, though at other points it feels like the series is trying to juggle so many conflicts at once and never quite musters full momentum.
What does stand out is the show’s polished production. Soo-yeon’s wardrobe, the grandeur of the political stage, and the contrast between smiling public appearances and their cold private exchanges give the drama a sleek, almost cinematic quality. Eugene delivers a layered performance as a woman both admired and feared, while Ji Hyun-woo embodies the tension of a man caught between love, duty, and resentment. Their dynamic anchors the story, even when side plots threaten to dilute the focus.
First Lady Episodes 1 and 2 had a bright if occasionally rickety beginning. Melodramatic sensibility is indelibly evident here, with abundant measures of spectacle offered to viewers, though not occasionally overwrought through frequent reveals. Performances and visuals are good in these initial episodes, but hold some slack for fine-tuning regarding the storyline. All of these building blocks for politics of aspiration, fractured familial relationships, and simmering betrayals are intact and ready for explosive ramifications in upcoming episodes.
