Doctor on the Edge Ending Explained
What Trauma Haunted Do Ji-ui?
For Do Ji-ui, the source of his most profound trauma lay in the loss of his best friend, Seonu, which caused him to bear a great burden of guilt for many years. Prior to coming to Pyeongdong Island, Ji-ui was a thriving plastic surgeon, but was stuck in the past emotionally. Every time he went near water or rode on a ship, he experienced intense panic attacks as the ocean continually brought back painful memories for him. As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that Do Ji-ui believed that his best friend died because of something he did.
He had told Seonu to venture into the sea, with no intention of thinking that he could face any danger while doing so. Later, when he was found gravely hurt, Ji-ui tried his best to save his life, but no immediate help was available. It touched every sphere of Ji-ui’s life. His longtime girlfriend, Hwa-young, breaks off their relationship because she thinks that neither of them deserves happiness living in the shadow of Seonu’s death. Instead of dealing with his pain, Ji-ui keeps it all to himself, burying it deep into the pile of work.

Nevertheless, his presence on Pyeongdong Island transforms him little by little. Ha-ri never pushed him into talking about his painful memories but was always beside him, waiting for the right moment. This is how Ji-ui starts sharing his past with her and stops keeping all his worries inside. The crucial moment comes when Ha-ri goes to visit the memorial place of his dead friend, and Ji-ui asks for forgiveness in tears. It is not the attempt to forget the past but rather an effort to accept it and start moving forward.
Why Did Byeoncheol Help Ji-ui?
Byeongcheol had problems with the doctors and was interested in doing the governor’s projects rather than hearing out what the doctors had to say. After the accident with the helicopter, Byeongcheol went ahead and supported the side of the administration. But all of this was turned upside down in the Doctor on the Edge finale. After a drunk-driving crash, Byeongcheol sustained a facial injury. Despite the fact that the Public Healthcare Center had already been shut down because of the fake investigation conducted by the governor, Ji-ui, Ha-ri, Chi-yeon, and other medical staff ignored any personal danger and helped Byeongcheol right away.
In particular, Ha-ri destroyed the seal of the center to take out some medicines, while the doctors were ready to face punishment if that was necessary to save the life of a patient. Seeing the doctors risking their careers for the sake of a man who had never been on their side, Byeongcheol understood that they had no choice but to fulfil their duty to the patients.

Thus, he privately gave Ji-ui the audio tape of Governor Ko, thereby giving him what he needed to make Governor Ko fall during the political campaign event. This was not only an expression of gratitude on account of saving his life, but also an opportunity for Byeongcheol to right his own wrongs. Through this act of giving Ji-ui the audio tape, he opted to be on the side of the doctors and the islanders instead of being on the side of the corrupt politician.
How Did Do Ji-ui Expose Governor Ko in Doctor on the Edge?
Ko used the topic of healthcare in this series mostly as a political device rather than as a civic matter. He put all the blame on Ji-ui and public health doctors after the incident, when people died due to poorly made helipads. Ji-ui did not keep silent and openly blamed the governor for the poor functioning of the emergency medical system, as a result of which Ko began to investigate the Pyeongdong Public Healthcare Center based on kickback charges.
The investigation led to shutting down the center, creating desperate conditions both for the doctors and for people on the island. However, Ji-ui continued to stand firm and would not help the governor during his elections in return for political favours. Everything changed when, in Doctor on the Edge episode 12, Byeongcheol clandestinely gave Ji-ui an audio file of Governor Ko. At the campaign event of the governor, while Ji-ui seemed like a supporter of the governor initially, he ended up exposing Ko through the audio.

In the audio recording, the intentions of Ko were unveiled, as he was going to allocate the Yeopoong healthcare project based on which company was going to offer him the most financial gains and not necessarily improve healthcare in the area. In this way, the credibility of the governor became instantly compromised, and interestingly enough, when Ko himself got injured in all the commotion, Ji-ui and the very doctors he tried to destroy came to his aid. The Public Healthcare Center was now permitted to be reopened, along with all the necessary equipment being acquired, such as an X-ray machine, an ultrasound machine, etc.
Did Nurse Eom and Ju-cheon Resolve Their Differences and End Up Together?
The greatest problem that Nurse Eom and Ju-cheon encountered together came when Eom realised that she was going to be pregnant. Being unsure of herself and the situation, she decided not to tell Ju-cheon right away. On the other hand, Ju-cheon was on the verge of leaving the island after fulfilling his public service. This led Eom to think that everything between them was taking a turn, and they were destined to have different lives. However, she found herself lying unconscious on the way to the hospital due to an ectopic pregnancy.

As the doctors did surgery to save her life, it was impossible for them to save the pregnancy. When Eom woke up, she put on her sarcasm to hide her pain, thinking that even Ju-cheon would be secretly glad since he did not have to carry the responsibility anymore. Ju-cheon outright denied the assumption, and this time he conveyed all that he could not say before. The truth is that the pregnancy frightened him since he was twenty-six years old and did not know what preparations to make to become a parent; yet, it definitely did not mean that he wanted her to go through such torture and miscarriage.
Above all, he was concerned about Eom’s well-being and was sad that she thought of him as someone who could not care for his family so much. Thanks to his open confession, Eom understood that it was all caused by fear, and not lack of love. To give their love a chance, she even applied for a job as a nurse in the hospital near Ju-cheon. At the end of Doctor on the Edge, they decide to have a future together.

Did Ha-ri Leave Pyeongdong Island?
Well, indeed, in the ending of Doctor on the Edge, Ha-ri makes up her mind about moving back to the mainland and becoming a doctor again, achieving the goal that she had to abandon many years ago. In the early episodes of this series, Ha-ri stayed on the island because she could not leave her grandmother alone. After her grandmother’s death, she stayed on the island as a doctor at the Public Healthcare Center because she felt responsible for the lives of people there and did not know what her plans were for the future. At the time when Ji-ui got his new assignment, she was confused whether she should stay on the island where she had settled down.

The key moment occurs when Ms Hwang tells Ha-ri that she mustn’t stay in the same place simply because she is afraid to go ahead. Not long after, Ha-ri sees a tape which was made by her grandmother before her death, and in it Mi-ja calls her granddaughter a brave, intelligent, and loving one. The information makes Ha-ri realise that she doesn’t have to be afraid anymore since she has become a person who can stand on her own feet now. Ha-ri understands that her grandmother always wanted her to achieve her goals and not to stay because of guilt, and decides to accept a hospital job.
How Does Doctor on the Edge End?

The drama ends on a positive yet practical note. Before leaving, Ji-ui and Ha-ri head to Jineondo to enjoy hamburgers together, making it their last peaceful date as they vow never to let the distance affect their bond. They give each other an assurance that they will always meet whenever they miss each other with a kiss. At the end of the Doctor on the Edge kdrama, Ji-ui reaches his new location, and from the start, it is clear that Ji-ui will have a hard time since it is a prison, and the environment around the location shows toughness.
