Blood And Myth Review: Directed by Kahlil Hudson alongside the main narrator Chase Breithoff, this new Hulu documentary brings to light the dark tale of Alaskan actor Teddy Kyle Smith. From the respected thespian to the man accused of committing atrocities, the film peels away the layers around the disappearance of Teddy. Released now in India on JioHotstar, the documentary goes beyond the mere true crime saga; it goes where the lines between myth, madness, and reality get blurred.

Blood And Myth Review

True crime documentaries mostly follow the course of rock-hard facts, interviews, a timeline, and evidence, but Blood & Myth doesn’t. It doesn’t simply reveal Teddy Kyle Smith as a criminal; it shows him as a man who claimed he was guided by the Inukun, the Alaskan traditional myth beings. Inukun are said to have supernatural abilities, and by Teddy’s claim that they guided his actions, it pushes this tale beyond the boundaries of any crime case I’ve seen thus far.

What I appreciated about the series is that it refrains from becoming just another true crime documentary. It rather cuts back and forth between Teddy’s testimony, interviews with his family, with community leaders, and even with cultural experts who feel sympathetic with the place the folklore holds in the Alaska Native culture. What that did for the series, in my view, is add an extra human element, nominally, whether or not Teddy was guilty, but how culture, beliefs, and fear dictate justice.

One of the strongest aspects of the documentary Blood & Myth is its atmosphere. The way it is shot, the snow-covered Alaskan wilderness, the remote cabins, and the eerie silence of the forests add a constant sense of tension. You almost feel the presence of the myths that Teddy speaks of. I think the director, Kahlil Hudson, deserves praise for creating a tone where the viewer is caught between scepticism and belief.

Something that I enjoyed was that the documentary provides the voice of the community. There is commentary by Teddy’s sister, local police officials, as well as by cultural liaisons, so the narrative becomes less than just a crime story. This was less news documentary and more cultural analysis.

As a documentary, however, Blood and Myth has its faults. At times, the film is so insistent on the mythic that the evidence question itself comes all but undeveloped. I longed for sharper answers on just what the evidence did tell. Instead, the focus darts immediately away from the courtroom to the mythology, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied as a viewer who prefers conclusiveness in crime narratives.

The other problem lies with Teddy himself. While we hear his voice through the tape recordings and his publicly sensationalised set of allegations, I never got a complete picture of him as a person. Was he an insecure man who cloaked himself in the insulation of legend, or did he earnestly believe he bore witness to the supernatural? We aren’t revealed deeply enough how he thought, how he felt, so I went away with questions rather than an interpretation.

Despite its flaws, I believe the documentary Blood and Myth is one that must be seen. This is unique in that it brings the viewer to think beyond foreordained reactions. Was Teddy Kyle Smith an outlaw who was driven by violence or, in some twisted way, the harbinger of mythology prophesying cultural decay and insensitivity towards nature?

For me personally, I remain not totally convinced by the supernatural theory, but wouldn’t totally rule out the ability of myth and narrative to influence human behaviour either. And so in that regard, Blood & Myth transcends genre and becomes an issue of the extent to which belief systems intrude on human behaviour, including the courtroom.

Blood & Myth Review: Summing Up

In short, Blood & Myth is creepy, confusing, sometimes infuriating, but impossible to forget. For me, the strongest takeaway was not so much on whether or not Teddy was guilty, but on how thin the line between myth and reality is, how cultural legend has the penchant to echo through current lives. Largely undefined may deter some, but for me, all the better for the series for doing that.
