Beyond the Bar Episode 1-2 Review: 에스콰이어: 변호사를 꿈꾸는 변호사들 is the latest Korean law drama from Netflix, which has been produced by JTBC and directed by Kim Jae-hong, written by Park Mi-hyun. The drama went on air on August 2, 2025, and will air on every Saturday and Sunday for 12 episodes. With Lee Jin-uk leading the cast as litigator specialist Yoon Seok-hoon, and Jung Chae-yeon as young lawyer Kang Hyo-min, the drama features Lee Hak-joo, Jeon Hye-bin, Kim Kang-min, and Lee Ju-yeon in significant roles.
Set in the ruthless corridors of Yullim Law Firm, Korean drama Beyond the Bar examines both the high-stakes battleground of courtroom wars and the inner conflict beneath its ruthless attorneys. With its clever writing and emotionally resonant cases, the series walks the tightrope between legal savvy and human interest, delivering more than standard law drama fare.

In the pilot episode, Beyond the Bar kdrama ep 1 gives us an overview of how Yullim Law Firm is run by five confident heads of various departments. Yoon Seok-hoon, the head of the litigation team, is well known for his cold demeanour, quick wit, and refusal to err.
Because the company holds group interviews with new recruits, Kang Hyo-min comes in late, dishevelled, and frazzled. Seok-hoon dismisses her summarily, unimpressed by her attitude and appearance. But behind her frazzled exterior lies a formidable resume: she’s a chief judge’s daughter and a law professor’s daughter, and a national mock trial champion.
Having been given a second chance at the interview, Hyo-min demonstrates her quick thinking and is hired at Yullim. At orientation, when others are sharing warm greetings, Seok-hoon delivers a stern lecture about what the company expects. He pulls no punches: half of the new recruits will be out the door if they can’t make it.
Hyo-min bravely volunteers to serve in the litigation team duty, to the chagrin of Seok-hoon. Her first assignment is to investigate a contract of Gangdong City Gas, where she finds strange drops in gas consumption in a particular area—Onpyeong. She is intrigued and goes there by herself, where she is missing for two days, to the anger of Seok-hoon.
When she returns, dripping wet and unshackled, she brings evidence of gigantic gas theft—over 2.4 million cubic meters, amounting to billions of won. Her finding salvages the company’s case and impress in court. Seok-hoon, in awarding the victory, also scolds her for being irresponsible, explicitly stating that talent is not enough to guarantee her position.

Beyond the Bar kdrama ep 2 starts with a scene at the Hoseon Fertility Clinic when a male, Park Gi-beom, causes a commotion. Outraged and shouting at the clinic to return what they took, he breaks expensive medical equipment. The case is entrusted to Yullim, where Seok-hoon and his team assess whether they can represent him, since the losses exceed 600 million won.
Piling on the pressure, Hoseon used to be Yullim’s in-house corporate law division client, before leaping to a competing firm because of office politics. Hyo-min and newbie colleague Guk-hyeon get offloading jobs, while Seok-hoon is tasked to investigate Na Dong-su, the seemingly inept son of a senior partner, bringing down morale on the team.
At the same time, Hyo-min’s boyfriend, Seong-chan, goes down on one knee and asks her to marry him. The proposal is made awkward as she tells him that she has a twin sister, Hyo-ju, who was born deaf. Hyo-min goes on to tell him about how her family, fearing their reputation, pushed her sister away. Seong-chan answers in harsh words and requests time to think about it, showing his shallow values.
Back at work, Seok-hoon summons Gi-beom, who is depressed and feels that pursuing legal action would be an exercise in futility. Nevertheless, Seok-hoon promises to stand by him when it transpires that Gi-beom was made sterile after he had undergone cancer treatment and had forgotten his only hope for fatherhood—his stored sperm—at the clinic, which lost it due to incompetence.

Yullim prepares for a battle of wits in court with their arch-rivals, Lee & Seo Law Firm, with Seok-hoon making a bluffing counterclaim of 500 million won. Hyo-min worries about having no concrete evidence, but Seok-hoon is optimistic that they’ll come up with something strong enough to reverse the case.
She stands in court, her face bearing the marks of having survived a car accident in the past. It is through Gi-beom’s moving testimony that we are told that she had been traumatised badly and withdrew from society. They yearned for a child, not so much for the purpose of parenthood but also to heal.
The failure of the clinic is uncovered. Insensitive comments, carelessness, and cover-ups for the couple engage a journalist in the courtroom. Put on the spot, Lee & Seo try to settle. Seok-hoon agrees to accept it if they pay 100 million won in compensation and settle within three days.
In the office, Na Dong-su asserts his strong presence, backed by influential friends. In the meantime, Hyo-min learns that Seong-chan’s already moved on from her, seen on a blind date. She’s heartbroken, taking solace in Seok-hoon’s presence, the episode closing on a low-key note of respect for one another.

Beyond the Bar begins on a hot note. The early episodes neatly set up a high-roller legal world with complicated relationships between characters. Lee Jin-uk is perfect as Yoon Seok-hoon—he’s cold and aloof, yet somehow charming. Jung Chae-yeon is both vulnerable and tough as Kang Hyo-min, and their strained mentor-mentee relationship is one of the early standouts.
What makes episode 1 of Beyond the Bar work most effectively is stuffs legal suspense into character development. Starting with the operatic courtroom montage and proceeding to office politicking, the show gives us just enough to hold our attention without overwhelming us with jargon or melodrama. The first episode does a decent job of finding a balance of legal intricacy and personal interest, primarily through Hyo-min’s determination and background.
episode 2 of Beyond the Bar raises the emotional stakes even higher. The Gi-beom plot could have descended into melodrama, but instead is restrained and treated with sensitivity. Courtroom manoeuvring, ethical issues, and the sacrifice of human beings lend the episode genuine gravity. Tracing attitudes towards appearance, disability, and worth in society also adds depth to the legal story.
Both episodes are aided by economical scripting and keen direction. The plotting is relentless, and even the supporting players—like slow-moving Na Dong-su—are introduced with enough intrigue to hold out the promise of more to come. The building tension between Seok-hoon and Hyo-min is compelling, with the two’s dynamic shifting between professional dislike and reluctant respect.
Beyond the Bar Review (Episode 1-2): Summing Up
As it goes on, there is much to anticipate. With intrigue simmering at Yullim Law Firm, hidden personal truths revealed, and morality grey cases unravelling, Beyond the Bar is looking like so much more than just another lawyer show. From these first episodes, we can anticipate a thoughtful, tear-jerking show that is not afraid to challenge what it actually means to pursue justice.
