Moon River Episode 1-2 Review: Helmed by director Lee Dong-hyun, the series stars Kang Tae-oh as Crown Prince Lee Kang and Kim Se-jeong as Park Dal-i. Other main casts include Lee Sin-young, Hong Su-zu, Jin Goo, Kim Nam-hee, Kwon Ju-seok, Han Sang-jo, and Kim Yoon-bae. Consisting of 14 episodes, The Moon Flows over the River (이강에는 달이 흐른다), flowing with its poetic tone, is a story where fate and identity flow like the river itself.
Moon River Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Moon River starts off with mysticism and folklore. A young lad walks up to a sage named Elder Wolha, who tends to the radiant tree that blooms with “fate blossoms”-blossoms of flowers representing the red thread of destiny that binds two souls. When he asks about a strange bloom, Wolha tells him a tragic story of a king and a queen whose love resulted in greed and betrayal.
This leads us into the world of Crown Prince Yi Kang, a man whose heart is still heavy from the loss of his consort. Once deeply in love, he watched his wife die under mysterious circumstances. Now, he hides behind arrogance and perfectionism, furious even when his royal robes are not the exact shade he ordered. Behind the temper, however, lies a man burdened by guilt and loss.
Within the palace walls, King Lee Hui is sickly and dominated by his Minister Kim Han-chul, who keeps him shut off from court affairs and makes all the decisions for the king. The name of Yi Kang again comes forth with regard to the ambitious designs of Han-chul, who attempts to marry his daughter into the royal line. However, beneath these political games, old wounds resurface: Yi Kang continues to blame himself for the death of his consort, an officially recorded suicide steeped in conspiracy.
Flashbacks reveal that the Crown Princess was accused of plotting the Queen’s assassination, forced to die by poison, and she defied her sentence and drowned herself instead. It is later admitted by Yi Kang’s father, King Lee Hui, that he ordered her death to prevent his son from fleeing with a confession that breaks Yi Kang’s spirit.
Meanwhile, Park Dal-i sells salt as a peddler in a coastal town called Uljin. Several years ago, she was found almost drowned and has absolutely no recollection of anything about her life before then. The adoptive aunt, Hong-nan, keeps warning Dal-i not to ever go to Hanyang, the capital, because there she’ll be recognised by bad people. But fate pulls Dal-i toward the city after a naval commander requests that she check on his troubled daughter.
As Dal-i reaches Hanyang, Yi Kang spots her in the crowd and freezes; she is the spitting image of his late wife. Scared, Dal-i mistakes his stare for chase and runs, finding herself in the house of Lee Je-woon, Yi Kang’s cousin. Through this encounter, underlying rivalries and family secrets are exposed. The episode ends in chaos as Dal-i leaps from a rooftop to escape and finds herself right in Yi Kang’s embrace.
Moon River Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 of Moon River digs deeper into Dal-i’s mysterious past: in a chilling flashback, she waded into a river to take her life, only to be pulled ashore by Hong-nan. As Hong-nan pulls her ashore, a divine being appears god of fate-who tells him that Dal-i’s red thread of destiny was once severed. Should this thread ever connect with its match once more, her life will again be in jeopardy. To protect her, Hong-nan removes Dal-i’s past and gives her a new identity.
But now, as the niece of a merchant with no memory of her royal life, Dal-i has grown up believing she’s the child of slaves and swears never to return to Hanyang. However, destiny seems to be stronger than her promise.

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Yi Kang presses on with his search for truth and revenge. He investigates the use of a very rare poison, emanating from the mythical Zhen bird, used once to kill his mother and possibly his wife; his suspicion falls directly upon the ever-powerful Minister Han-chul. To fight back, Yi Kang forms an uneasy alliance with his cousin Lee Un, though their shared hatred of Han-chul masks deeper, personal motives.
Fate intervenes in the form of Dal-i’s re-entrance into Yi Kang’s life. Mistaking her for a common porter, Yi Kang can’t ignore the striking resemblance to his late wife. The ensuing scene is filled with awkward humour and emotional tension as she scolds him for staring, oblivious to the fact that she’s reprimanding the Crown Prince himself.
As Dal-i starts her new life in the capital, her benevolent nature gets her into trouble when she puts her life on the line to save a little girl. Yi Kang’s failed attempt to save the child earns him Dal-i’s scorn, but her words, echoing a private memory only his wife knew, confirm what Yi Kang already suspects: Dal-i is his lost princess, though her memories have vanished.
The falling cherry blossoms tumble around them in a soft, sweet scene as she wipes away a tear from his face, sensing the bond that could not be explained. Parting ways with a promise to share a simple meal the next day, they did not know the storm that awaited them. At the end of episode 2, Dal-i gets wrongfully arrested, and Yi Kang comes out to rescue her, still concealing his royal identity, his outstretched hand trembling between love and destiny.

Every scene between them feels like a conversation between past and present, as if some form of destiny is rewriting their story all over again. Dal-i’s warmth and resilience soften the show’s sombre tone to ground the fantasy in something heartbreakingly human.
