She Said Maybe Review: Directed by Buket Alakuş and Ngo The Chau, this German romantic comedy is written by Ipek Zübert. The movie is led by Beritan Balcı, Sinan Güleç, Serkan Çayoğlu, Cansu Tosun, Meral Perin, Anja Karmanski, Ilknur Boyraz, and others. The Netflix movie’s duration is nearing two hours (1 hour 47 minutes), and it endeavours to strike a balance between romance, familial strains, and discovery, with a setting changing from Germany to Turkey. The plot is about Mavi, who has it all worked out until life takes a dramatic turn at a time she least expects it to.

It revolves around Mavi, who lives with her boyfriend Can in Germany. They have been together long enough for Can to plot to propose to her, but Mavi is reluctant to agree. She is convinced she has some dreams to pursue before settling down to marry. That reluctance sets her upon a trip to Turkey, where she learns she has a connection to a wealthy family she never knew she had. Overnight, she is confronted with decisions that can alter her life permanently: between love, independence, and obligations to her family.

Netflix’s She Said Maybe movie immediately brought to mind some sort of combination of all those romance dramas about some “ordinary” girl who wins herself a ticket to money and prestige. The flashy clothes, the wealthy family estate, and the parties make it sound like some sort of fairytale dressed up in today’s rom-com wrapping. As I’ve seen stories like this before, however, I never really did feel utterly surprised. From an early point, I could nigh guess at plot points and most of the time my guesses proved to hold true.

The Predictability and how formulaic it is are one of my major complaints with the German film She Said Maybe. Though its plot is breezy and uncomplicated, it brings nothing new to the table. Too much is based on retrograde tropes: caring boyfriend who waits with ring in hand, secret family money, overbearing grandmother, and yes, internal torment over “Should I follow my heart or my duty?”

Despite the frequently familiar plot, however, I can honestly state that the cast is excellent. Beritan Balci as Mavi is hands-down the strongest element of the Netflix movie She Said Maybe. She is vibrant and has a presence to her character such that we believe her and support her. Even when stretched during some points of narration, her facial expressions and charisma captured my attention.

I was equally convinced by Serkan Çayoğlu as Can; however, at some points, it felt as if there was something lacking in his character, and it felt like it was going untapped. The chemistry is warm and fuzzy between both leads, but I wanted to see something deeper from the script regarding their relationship—why are they and they alone perfect for one another beyond those superficial romance scenes?

The side characters brought some zest and comedy to it, but sometimes felt like appendages to Mavi’s narrative and not fully formed characters themselves. This can’t be damaging to anyone who is only looking for a light-hearted cinema experience, but to my sensibilities diluted the dramatic impact of the film.

Where She Said Maybe movie really excels is its looks. From Turkey’s gorgeous landscapes to Germany’s idyllic streets, it is like a travel ad at times. The hot-air-balloon shot, the rave scenes, and the landscape shots are beautiful to see, although they add little to character depth. If you prefer movies to introduce culture and environment with a shiny coat, then this Netflix movie will most definitely deliver it.

But it has the colossal drawback: it’s style over substance. While I adored my time with costume work, colours, and flashy backgrounds, all the while, I yearned to see more emotionality. For one thing, Mavi’s reluctance to marry and her aspirations as an architect are told early and are never really filled out by the wider film at large. It feels like it wants us to believe her goals are a big deal, but it never really takes us quite there to see exactly what those goals are.

Without spoiling details, I was not pleased with how the conclusion to the German movie She Said Maybe went. The film has established tension with her clan, love, and personal questions throughout its running time, and its conclusion, therefore, felt abrupt and utterly contrived. I wanted Mavi to make some dramatic choice at this point, or at least have some emotional resolution at least partly justified. The film instead ties everything up as tightly as possible, and it left me fairly unhappy.

But it isn’t a terrible film either. As a light-hearted one-night rental with something to look at but little to demand, She Said Maybe is a decent casual film. It is the kind of film to run one evening during a weekend when you want something light-hearted and little to think about. Enough is attempted with its wardrobe, backgrounds, and vibrant lead actress to make it acceptable to see.

Netflix She Said Maybe Review: Summing Up

In the end, Netflix’s attempt at a smooth German romance is agreeable now and then but never gets beyond being “average.” The charm of Beritan Balci and Turkey’s stunning landscapes support the film more than its narrative does. For myself, bittersweet enjoyment and bittersweet annoyance, I appreciated the delicacy, but it did not work for me as I predicted it would.
