Netflix’s Two Graves opens by introducing us to Isabel, who is able to get over her granddaughter Veronica’s untimely disappearance. Veronica and her closest friend Marta, the daughter of Rafael Salazar and a well-known gangster, went out one evening and vanished and were never seen again. Families were left in tatters, the town was shaken by rumours, and the authorities offered no closure. Isabel refused to accept not knowing, holding a blinding belief that one day she would find out what had happened to them.
While the police inquiry eventually fizzled out, Rafael Salazar, Marta’s father, embarked on a ruthless inquiry of his own. His power and intimidating rank were unable to ferret out the facts, however. The one clue was from Jonas Herrera, a young man who had gone out with the girls for a party one evening. He denied it, but his participation welcomed him into Salazar’s cycle of violence. Sometime afterwards, Marta’s corpse was discovered, brutally raped and killed, and Veronica was nowhere to be found. This dualism—utter assurance of Marta’s demise and incessant uncertainty of Veronica’s well-being— drove Isabel deeper into her mission.
Isabel’s persistence led her to a shocking discovery involving Beltran, a piano student of hers, and Carlos Jaen, a high-profile TV presenter. Beltran admitted that it was a cocaine party that was hosted by influential guests, including Carlos, and Veronica and Marta attended. Force and violence were what extracted the truth because Isabel took the law into her own hands just to receive answers. Her actions pulled her into an uneasy alliance with Rafael Salazar, setting them both on a path of vengeance.

What Really Happened at the Party?
The party arranged by Beltran proved to be a turning point for everyone. A night of fun had been promised to Veronica and Marta, and it was what they were attracted to, the sense of glamour and adventurism involved in being associated with powerful men. It turned into a nightmarish experience very soon, with drugs and liquor mixing any sense of sensibility, and hungry men like Carlos Jaen taking advantage of vulnerable teenagers.
Marta, inexperienced with drugs and a stunned individual by the brutality, became withdrawn. Carlos isolated her and raped her, and she got hurt irrevocably. Veronica and Jamila then found Marta in that state, and a furious argument ensued. Marta was determined that she would report the crime, and nothing would prevent her from reporting that at any personal or social cost. Veronica was afraid of the shame and stigma that would follow and believed that society and the police would call them prostitutes and not rape victims.
This moral contrast between the two girls unleashed a chain reaction that would change the destiny of everyone. The party was more than a setting—it was the catalyst that untangled exploitation’s dark side and ignited Marta’s tragic fate, Veronica’s exile, and Isabel’s quest for truth.

How Did Marta Die and Who Was Responsible?
Marta’s death was the most devastating consequence of that night, and understanding it is central to the ending of Two Graves. Traumatised beyond measure, Marta’s feelings ranged from rage to desperation. She even tried to kill herself, cutting her wrists. Veronica halted her, but the fight got out of hand. In agony, Marta struck out, cutting Veronica’s throat in desperation.
In the tumult, Veronica pushed Marta aside, and the blow pushed Marta into a cement bench. The impact was lethal—she died when she received it. While not deliberate, the impact of Veronica was the immediate and direct cause of Marta’s death.
Antonio, seeing the harm that would be caused by Salazar learning the facts, intervened and kept his daughter safe from him. He drowned Marta’s corpse in the ocean and had Veronica smuggled into Morocco. By doing this, he rescued his daughter but locked the Salazars into a defeat that would never be regained. The catastrophe was not caused by evil, but out of a moment’s desperation, but its consequences led to the destruction of several families.
Was Isabel Able to Save Veronica?
This question strikes at the heart of Isabel’s journey. After years of relentless searching, Isabel was finally able to locate Veronica, who was leaving with Jamila. The meeting was in an emotional state, a reflection of the perseverance of Isabel, but it was complicated by possible future vengeance from Salazar. Rafael had killed those whom he felt responsible for, Carlos Jaen, but finding Veronica alive rekindled a fresh anger.
The girl well understood that when Salazar was in front of Veronica, he would not show her any mercy. Frantic, she made a desperate effort to make him understand and let him know that it was an accident that Marta had died. However, Salazar was consumed by despair and vengeance and would not listen to her. Veronica’s survival was a shame to his daughter’s honour as far as he was concerned.
Eventually, Isabel made the final sacrifice. When giving Salazar a ride in her vehicle, nothing could persuade him. She therefore took an unexpected action and drove into a cliff, where both of them ended up in the ocean. Salazar instantly died when his head struck the windshield. Isabel slipped and decided to drown, believing it was the only way in which she would manage to save Veronica and Jamila from Salazar’s fury.
Her sacrifice granted Veronica a second chance at life, even though the cost would be that Isabel could no longer visit her family. It was a tragic but extremely human decision—a grandmother giving up her life so that her granddaughter might live a non-terrorised life.
What Happened to Rafael Salazar at the End of Two Graves?
Rafael Salazar’s fate was sealed in the car with Isabel. While all were used to knowing him as a great gangster, death was not one of victory for him, but obsession and sorrow. His desire for revenge had possessed him, and irrespective of how far and long he looked, the crash was not that which he was able to witness. He had taken revenge on Marta by killing Carlos Jaen, but that was not sufficient. His anger required more, and it was not perceptive.
Isabel’s final act freed Salazar from the vendetta that had engulfed him. Immediate was his death, and it was positively heart-wrenching—he died without a moment’s peace, without forgiving, and without realising that his own zeal for vengeance had annihilated him more thoroughly than any other agency. Whereas Isabel’s was a death for love through sacrifice, the Spanish series Two Graves ends with Salazar’s death through obsession, to which he could not relinquish.
