Two Graves Review: Directed by Kike Maíllo, Dos Tumbas is a Spanish limited Netflix series comprised of a total of three episodes that each last for around a duration of 50 minutes. Starring Nonna Cardoner, Álvaro Morte, Hovik Keuchkerian, Salva Reina, Kiti Mánver, Joan Solé, Magdalena Tejado, Carlos Scholz, Iván Prados and others. The show tells the story of Isabel, a grandmother who refuses to believe that her granddaughter, Veronica, has gone missing. Although the police department and even her family members, at a later time, also give up hope that she would return alive, Isabel embarks upon a personal mission that leads her into some disturbing discoveries about what happened that one fateful night.

Two Graves Review

Netflix’s Two Graves was a very fast-paced show, but it still lingers for a considerable amount of time in Isabel’s obsession and motivation, and that contributes towards the plot, but sometimes it lags anyway. The tension that had kept me at a level of alertness was diluted because of scenes running for more time than they should have.

Two Graves Series chooses a measured approach. Unfortunately, this works against it at times. Instead of making me feel the urgency of Isabel’s hunt for answers, I often felt like the narrative was circling the same points. Despite that, the performances are a saving grace. Nonna Cardoner brings a sense of innocence and rawness to the character of Veronica that makes her disappearance particularly heartbreaking. Álvaro Morte, even in a less flashy role compared to his famous Professor character, adds weight and credibility whenever he is on screen.

First and foremost, Kiti Mánver, as Isabel, delivers a very honest performance. She totally conveys the desperation of a time-ridden and truth-ridden grandmother. She conveys her tenacity, her feeling of guilt, and her fragility enough to keep the program emotionally afloat even when the script falters. Without the superb acting, I don’t think that I would’ve stayed abreast until the very end.

The aspect of a mystery was where I personally felt the series lost ground. The vanishing of Veronica and Marta provides a very interesting groundwork, yet the more layers are built, the more the story becomes needlessly complicated. The authors seemed hell-bent on including plot twist after plot twist, and while some truly shocked me, others seemed contrived and served only for confusion.

By the end, instead of feeling satisfied by a laboriously constructed puzzle piece by piece, I was fatigued by the constant attempt at shock. The emotional weight of the story was lost sometime between one too many subplots and a hectic execution. A tighter story that had less potential for distraction would have made Netflix’s Two Graves a more stinging experience.

Nonetheless, there are moments from the series that are truly stellar. Isabel’s inner tension, her guilt for her prior decisions, and her affection for her granddaughter give the narrative some depth. Any time the program gets heavy into this emotional aspect, it finds a way to resonate immensely with the viewers. It had me feeling emotional over the challenges that Isabel faces in balancing truth and family, and those moments made me recollect that there was some real substance that it had to offer regarding love, regret, and sacrifices.

However, these emotional beats are not consistent throughout. Some of the scenes are very effective, and some are borderline melodramatic and overplayed. Rather than draw me in, at some points the overblown moments actually pushed me away, and it was difficult for me to become fully immersed.

Technically, Two Graves Series is well-shot. The visuals capture the bleakness of a community weighed down by secrets, and shadows and muted hues contribute to the tense mood. The cinematography is polished, though it doesn’t quite break much new ground. If you’ve seen other Spanish crime series from Netflix, this one will feel more familiar than unfamiliar.

The background score also succeeds in getting the job done without ever feeling memorable. It provides tension when it needs tension, yet it never quite leaves a lasting impression once the episode has closed. Like the camera gaze, the score sounds competent but generic.

Netflix Two Graves Review: Summing Up

Overall, the Spanish series Two Graves was neither a complete failure nor a total success. It falls in the middle—it is at times interesting, at times a disappointment. While it has some effective acting, led by Kiti Mánver, and some effective emotional plot turns that truly stick with you, it is hindered by a glacially paced burn, a plot that is more formidable than it knows how to handle, and a writing approach that turns toward melodrama more often than it is required.
