Fall For Me Review: Netflix’s new German film is directed by Sherry Hormann and written by Stefanie Sycholt. The film has an excellent cast led by Svenja Jung (Lilli), Theo Trebs (Tom), Tijan Marei (Valeria), and Victor Meutelet (Manu), and it has some familiar faces, such as Thomas Kretschmann, Antje Traue and others. The film is about 103 minutes long, and it is an erotic thriller against the stunning Mallorca backdrop.

Fall For Me Review

Netflix described the Fall For Me movie as a hot and suspenseful erotic thriller. What I actually watched, however, was considerably less hot than I expected. The premise informs us that Lilli is heading out to see her sister, who is marrying a man she has yet to see. Suspicious of the man, Lilli begins to snoop, then gets distracted by another mysterious man with whom she becomes involved. It’s the kind of premise that would have you racing with danger, passion, and shocking twists. What I actually felt was that I already knew what was going to happen next.

To be fair, the theme is relevant—romance scams do happen, and the film does an okay job of showing just how easy it is to take advantage of people when they are emotionally exposed. That part I did like. But once you get settled in and watch the film, the so-called “mystery” is very predictable. The moment you lay eyes on some of the characters, you pretty much have a pretty good idea of what is going on with whom. As a thriller, that predictability takes away a lot of the tension.

The only aspect that I did like was Lilli as the female protagonist. She is not shown to be naive but more cunning, suspicious, and wide-eyed. Svenja Jung is good at providing a good balance of strength and vulnerability so that she is easy to sympathise with.

But the entire sub-plot of Tom—this guy she obviously has a crush on—just didn’t do anything for me. For a movie that’s marketed as an “erotic thriller,” there had to be sparks, but there just wasn’t a whole lot of chemistry between the two of them whatsoever. Their love affair just didn’t feel like something the script was writing them to do, and not something organic.

As for the rest of the cast, I was won over by Manu as the suave-but-unscrupulous fiancé, and by Valeria as a love-struck woman. But some of the supporting actors, such as Nick and Girasol, would have brought a lot more flavour to the story if they were given more space.

Now, when I watch something that’s a thriller, I expect suspense. I want to have those “wait, what just happened?” moments. Erotic thriller Fall For Me, alas, does not quite deliver on that. There are showdowns and plot twists, yes, but they’re so on cue. By act three, I wasn’t really surprised by anything. Not that the movie was boring; I wasn’t sleeping or texting, but it just never gave me that adrenaline kick that a thriller would.

If I had to choose something that really did it for me, it’s the visuals. The background in Mallorca is beautiful—sun-kissed beaches, quaint villas, and nightlife. Honestly, the cinematography makes the film look significantly more compelling than it really is. There were certain points where I was more interested in the scenery than the plot itself.

So do I think I’d be able to recommend Netflix’s Fall For Me? If you’re in the mood for something easily consumable that doesn’t require a lot of effort, then yes—it’s acceptable as a one-off. The acting is acceptable, the scenery is pleasant, and the idea of watching scams within relationships is fascinating.

But if you’re in the mood for something intense, something edgy, or something shocking, you’re most likely going to be leaving disappointed. The “erotic thriller” title is actually more of a marketing ploy than anything. It is erotic, no question, but it didn’t strike me as a thriller. The film plays things too safe, and because of this, it’s not the type of story that lingers in your mind after the credits have stopped rolling.

Netflix Fall For Me Review: Summing Up

It’s glossy, it’s watchable, but predictable and forgettable too. German film Fall For Me is the kind of film you leave on when you don’t really feel like doing anything on a lazy night, but it won’t leave you sitting on the edge of your seat with the thrills, the shocks, and the passion you could be seeking.
