The Winning Try Episode 1-2 Review: Netflix’s new kdrama 트라이: 우리는 기적이 된다 brings Yoon Kye-sang back to the screen in a confident leading role as Ju Ga-ram, a former rugby star with a shameful past. Supporting him are Lim Se-mi as fiery Bae I-ji, and Kim Yo-han as diligent team captain Yun Seong-jun. And rounding out the cast are Cho Han-gyeol, Hwang Sung-bin, Kim E-jun, Yoon Jae-chan and others. Directed by Kim Jae-hyun and Kim Ji-yeon, and written by Im Jin-a, this sports K-drama will be 12 episodes, which will be shown every Friday and Saturday on Netflix.
The Korean Drama The Winning Try, aka Try: A Miracle in Us, is a story about a second chance tarnished in the ruthless arena of high school rugby. The greatest rugby player in Korea, Ju Ga-ram, is derailed by a doping scandal that ruins his life as an athlete. Years later, he returns not to play, but to coach a demoralised high school rugby team. With fractured relationships, school politics, and battered pride to navigate, Ga-ram must get his team and himself back on the pitch for a second chance.

Episode 1 of The Winning Try sets the tone with a thrilling international rugby match between South Korea and Japan. South Korea’s star, Ju Ga-ram, allows them to keep up with Japan’s dominance. The thrill does not last long, however, when Ga-ram is accused of doping. Not only is he robbed of his reputation but also the championship title he had won. He turns into a recluse, no longer visible to the public eye, shamed and shunned.
Years later, Ga-ram comes back, this time as captain of his old high school rugby team. The team is talented but demoralised, losing and demotivated. There is the extremely talented but obstinate team captain, Seong-jun, who will not take Ga-ram’s orders because of his questionable past. Their confrontation paves the way for the emotional and tactical struggles that follow.
Compounding Ga-ram’s return is politicisation. The support staff and vice principal resent the budget for the rugby team and want to reallocate the money to “more deserving” clubs. The PTA president, on the other hand, has an ulterior motive, intending to advance the career of his daughter as a shooter on the back of the rugby team.
Ga-ram is also emotionally strained with Bae I-ji, the school’s shooting coach and his past mistress. His unresolved history is another hindrance to the coach’s already rocky comeback. In The Winning Try kdrama episode 1, Seong-jun openly tries to get Ga-ram disqualified, but is taken aback by Ga-ram’s determination and melodrama, reminding everyone of him, he’s not finished yet.

The Winning Try Kdrama Episode 2 continues with Ga-ram treading on thin ice. Though reinstated as a coach, he understands that winning over Seong-jun is vital. Following a heart-to-heart talk, Ga-ram pleads with him to opt for the game of love rather than personal revenge. He assures him that he will guide the team so that they do not make the same mistakes that he did.
In the meantime, the vice principal and the shooting coach foil Ga-ram’s plot by arranging for his team to play Daesang High, the country’s top-ranked rugby team, fortunately, Ga-ram’s old coach. Ga-ram does take on the challenge, not to beat them, but to show his team how to lose with dignity. His team is, however, angry at the prospect of another humiliating defeat.

In Episode 2 of The Winning Try, the Ga-ram team is dominated during the first half of the match by Daesang High with zero points. But the second half is a change of fortune. Ga-ram cleverly turns the team strategy around, tightening up defence and scoring a single hard-won point. Even though the team loses the match, it is the first time the team has been able to score against a team that is so strong, a small win contributing to an astronomical morale boost.
The season concludes on a high. Ga-ram’s lesson is a real one: victory is not always measured by the scoreboard. For a team that has lost the ability to believe, this little win is gigantic. It’s the first genuine step on their long path to redemption.
The Winning Try Episode 1-2 Review
Netflix’s The Winning Try starts off strong with two episodes that hit all the right emotional beats. Yoon Kye-sang delivers a wonderful performance as a man grappling with his own backstory and attempting to motivate a group of disappointed teenagers. The series isn’t necessarily about rugby; it’s about themes of failure, redemption, and the expectations of manhood and adolescence.
The story in Kdrama The Winning Try Episode 1-2 is perfectly balanced between intensity and vulnerability. There’s a breakneck pace to the action, and each scene has a point, whether ratcheting up tension on the field or stripping away emotional layers from it. Seong-jun’s refusal of Ga-ram, and the battle of the coach to reclaim his honour as well as the trust of the team, is as gripping an action as any sports action.
The drama deals with individuals who have politics, pride, and self-interest behind them. These multi-dimensional dynamics are depth-giving, so that the audience is emotionally invested beyond the result of the matches. Ga-ram’s interaction with I-ji is also depth-giving, with suggestions of old wounds that still bleed quietly in the background.

Overall, The Winning Try Kdrama so far feels like it is going to be a good show. It’s not simply about attempting to score tries on the field; it’s about gaining strength from defeat, honour from leadership, and most of all, learning how to fight for something worth believing in.
