Jurassic World Rebirth Ending Explained: Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, the movie stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid, along with Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and others. The film follows a secret mission to collect DNA from dinosaurs, which could hold the key to a cure for heart disease. But all goes wrong when the mission team — and a civilian family — are stranded on a dangerous island with everything from ancient predators to gene-spliced monsters to a dark past of its own. The film delivers a heady mix of action, survival thrills, emotional dilemmas and a cliffhanger that leaves many, many questions hanging over the future.

Now that the credits have rolled, we can discuss the final act and try to make some sense of it, answering some of those big questions — who lived, what did happen to the DNA and what the ending actually means.

Jurassic World Rebirth Recap

The movie starts with greedy drug company executive Martin Krebs sending a brainy crew to a forbidden island near the equator, where they will collect the DNA of three species of dinosaurs, one which lived in the water, one which lived on land and one which lived in the air. He assures them that he is going to use the genetic material to discover a cure for heart disease, but he is going to charge an exorbitant price for the cure.

They include Zora Bennett, a deadly mercenary; Captain Duncan Kincaid, a space captain who is chivalrous to the point of absurdity, Dr. Loomis, a generic civilian scientist; and the rest of the crew. And they are joined along the way by the Delgado family, a father and two daughters on vacation gone bad, who get into the mission after a close call with a Mosasaurus.

As the team tries to investigate the island, they are confronted with familiar and genetically altered dinosaurs, and they fight to survive. D, the majority of the crew are massacred by them, including a gruesome new hybrid creature they’ve named the D-Rex. During the process, the team steals the blood samples it desires and uncovers secrets of an old Jurassic Park lab building on the island, ready to be found. Now, it’s a battle for more than DNA; it’s one for survival, truth and justice. And just when all hope is lost, some brave choices turn the tide.

What Happens to Duncan During the Final Battle?

Morally upright ship’s captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) thus takes the measure of things in his last scene, so that their quality and weight cannot sink. He’s the one who stands up while the others all falter, rescuing a stranded family and being the one to lead with his heart. Duncan does something courageous in the last act.

When the killer D-Rex arrives to collect Isabella, the girl Duncan vowed to protect, he fires flares to divert the beast in the opposite direction. It’s a risky move, and one that almost kills him. Unbeknownst to the team as they evacuate in subterranean tunnels, Duncan is presumed dead.

But in a gratifying twist of fate, we glimpse more flares in the distance, signalling that Duncan survived. The pack runs towards the light and finds him, and then we get relief at last from all this loss. Duncan’s courage provides the ending with a solid, emotional punch, and we are rooting for him if there ever is a sequel.

Who Makes It Out Alive in Jurassic World: Rebirth?

Survival was never something to be taken for granted in that film, not with all the deadly creatures running about the isle. The assignment involves a team hired by a drug tycoon, Martin Krebs. He browbeats them to bring back dinosaur DNA from three pivotal species: one aquatic, one earthly and one airborne, in order to create a literal lifesaver drug. Of course, money is his real motive, not human lives.

Ship captain Duncan, scientist Dr. Loomis and others make up the team. Along the way, they meet the Delgados, a civilian family on a boat trip. Sadly, not everyone is safe. Bobby, Zora’s friend, gets eaten at the start of the mission by the Mosasaurus. Nina and Leclerc, two of Duncan’s men, are murdered when they pass through the island’s giant creature inhabitants.

But the silver lining? The Delgado family and young Isabella, Zora, Duncan, and Loomis all make it out alive. Despite the D-Rex raging through the park and all the close calls, they all escape with their lives — and the crucial DNA.

How Does Jurassic World: Rebirth End?

The climactic battle takes place at an old lab building, the one we glimpsed at the beginning in an opening 17-year-old flashback. The site remains lit up at night and emits a Dinosauresque bellow, to which dinosaurs are attracted, and they come in search of walls of light and noise. All of this is the purpose.

Krebs shows his hand, handcuffed to the container with the DNA sample and armed with a gun. But justice is swift — the mutant D-Rex destroys the truck and eats him. It’s a proper demise for a man who saw dinosaurs as nothing more than dollar bills.

Zora recovers the DNA, but the D-Rex remains a threat. Duncan deflects the flares, clearing the way for Isabella to escape, while creating an opportunity for the team to make an escape. They make their escape — shaken but intact — with the three DNA samples.

What Does the Ending of Jurassic World: Rebirth Portend for the Future?

Here, the Jurassic World Rebirth ending gives us action, sacrifice, and even a touch of moral examination. The survivors possess the DNA, but what they do with it from here on out could be the future — and not necessarily the better. Even if not a few of the fans would have liked a more definitive ending, it’s not bad for an ending that works within the title.

Rebirth also speaks, not just of dinosaurs or scientific theory, but of the franchises themselves — so, just as it was the case previously, the series is going to change again, with new heroes and new challenges. What the finale does create, though, is this: the dinosaur era is done, but the story is just getting started.

And there’s a suggestion that this isn’t the final chapter. In referencing Alan Grant, Dr. Loomis makes a reference to the original Jurassic Park by referring to him as his teacher, and old-school fans will have to guess. Are they preparing a sequel with Loomis, Zora, and Duncan spearheading a new scientific revolution? Could Isabella find herself part of that world, too?

So the ending of Jurassic World Rebirth is packed with loose ends — not annoyingly so, but teasingly. It is not a tidy, happy ending, nor is it a tragedy. It is uncertain, hopeful, full of what could be.
