Shark Whisperer Review: This 1 hour 30 minutes Netflix documentary, directed by James Reid, J.P. Stiles, and Harrison Max, is the inspiring story of marine conservationist Ocean Ramsey, whose encounters with sharks have filled people with both wonder and indignation. Ocean and her fiancé, business partner Juan Oliphant, is not only a talented diver but also a social media celebrity who became renowned for cage-free swimming with some of the ocean’s most feared creatures. The film tracks how her videos went viral and created a worldwide mania, fueling heated debates about conservation, spectacle, and the thin line between science and self-promotion.

Shark Whisperer Review

As I sat down to view Shark Whisperer documentary, I didn’t exactly anticipate a whole lot more than stunning underwater video. But by its end, I was sitting here thinking about our fear of sharks—and more, the men and women who have the guts to get in the face of that fear. I wouldn’t say this is the best nature documentary I’ve ever been able to view, but it’s certainly one of the most brazen. And yes, I was left with mixed feelings.

I’ll start with what I enjoyed the most: visually, this documentary is breathtaking. The underwater scenes do justice to the sharks in a manner I never found possible. There is a kind of wordless poetry in the way Ocean floats up to these monsters, outstretched hand as if she’s trying to talk in a forgotten language. To me, a person brought up on watching sharks as blood-sucking killers on film, this was a new and intriguing spin.

The film is not shy of debate regarding Ocean either. She is portrayed not just as a brave diver but as a social media star whose methods provoke admiration and censure. Several of the marine biologists featured in the film are concerned about the danger she is taking and question whether what she’s doing is ultimately going to make conservation a difference or whether she is just doing this for publicity. And I’ll be honest, I could see both sides. There is a fine line between raising awareness and achieving notoriety, and Netflix’s Shark Whisperer isn’t always precise about where the line is.

What I was most struck by was how unapologetically Ocean takes ownership of her process. Love her or despise her, there is no doubt but that she’s courageous. To see her swim inches from a great white shark with no cage or covering is terrifying and mesmerizing, even on TV. I wouldn’t be able to do it myself, and maybe that’s why I couldn’t look away from her. There is something so profoundly ennobling about seeing a woman reclaim a space that has been occupied by fear and danger—and doing it with poise, authority, and self-assurance.

All that to the side, I don’t think we should dismiss someone’s efforts simply because it does have a little pizzazz. Ocean clearly enjoys what she’s doing. Her passion is genuine, and her behavior towards sharks is driven by deep respect and not by being irresponsible. I especially enjoyed how the movie illustrates the influence of her activism to get shark conservation legislation passed in Hawaii. That’s tangible influence, and more than most influencers can claim.

What I enjoyed most about Shark Whisperer on Netflix was that it did not attempt to oversimplify the issue. It understands that human-shark relations are complex, dangerous, and emotionally nuanced. It also asks the broader question: in an attention-challenged, distracted age, is it ethical to use spectacle in furthering a cause? My answer, after viewing this documentary, is a resounding yes—if it leads to real awareness and action.

It is wonderfully balanced between aesthetics and fact. There are several scientific voices throughout the film that keep everything grounded and ask good questions. But at the end of the day, this is Ocean’s story. It’s about her being brave enough to be different, and about how that choice upsets the world around her.

Documentary Shark Whisperer Review: Summing Up

Shark Whisperer was an odyssey for me. I wouldn’t say it completely changed my own outlook on sharks, but it definitely made me less afraid—and more curious. It’s not a perfect documentary, and I don’t agree with everything Ocean does or says, but I can respect her courage. In an age where environmental issues are more serious than ever, we require people who are not afraid to be unorthodox, even if it involves exposing themselves to ridicule.
