Phony Review

Hulu series Phony revolves around Sonny, a high school student whose relationship with his mother, Ellen, is more intimate than it would typically be. Ellen is both his mother and the principal of the school. Following his involvement in an automobile accident that left him in a coma for a week, Sonny wakes up from his slumber believing that the woman who is supposedly his mother is actually an imposter. This woman is identical in appearance to Ellen, though Sonny is convinced that she is not really his mother because of something fundamental about her. He is the only one unable to distinguish between the two women.

With the help of his childhood friend Mallory and her cousin Weldon, he tries to unravel the mystery when they discover a mysterious dead body near a river. It has to be said that I was not anticipating Hulu’s Phony to be this engaging. On the surface, this could very well seem like yet another show that tries to take advantage of the oddity factor to manufacture excitement. My expectations were set to low-key expectations about this story and its ability to stand out among the rest of the mystery shows, but after watching the first two episodes, I have to say that I changed my mind.

The thing about this show is that it does not give you any immediate answers to the situation and makes you wonder what is going on. One of my favourite aspects of the premise of the 2026 Phony series is just how personal the suspicion of Sonny is. This is not just a matter of someone looking strange. Ellen has been the most significant figure in his life and always has a history of special gestures and understanding between them.

Prior to the accident, Sonny starts to challenge his mother and wants to start making decisions about the rest of his life on his own. He begins to consider college in California and having his first sexual encounter with Chloe. The argument between Sonny and his mother, which was triggered by the fact that she found the sex toy, pushes him into running away from home. This gives an emotional grounding to the story. Now when he wakes up and declares that his mother is a doppelgänger, it is hard to tell whether he is genuinely afraid or still angry from the argument.

This particular moment with their code is quite powerful. Sonny realises that he has a way of showing Ellen his feelings, and he uses that when meeting the woman at the school dance. Sonny embraces the woman and waits for her to show him back his gesture in the way only the real Ellen would know. I loved this particular twist of turning the normal and warm moment into something creepy and frightening. Sonny cannot just tell people about the differences in the woman since all see the exact same Ellen he knows. Instead, he must focus on the small things that he believes could reveal the truth about the woman.

Sam Nivola’s Sonny is quite convincing in conveying this uncertainty. He is scared, confused and getting increasingly desperate; however, he is also a teen whose behaviour may lead others to find it hard to listen to him. Seeing him trying to justify himself to Vogel, Chloe, the school counsellor, and finally to the police is quite irritating and frustrating, but this is how it should be. With every new person dismissing him, his loneliness becomes more obvious. However, his constant efforts to run away from the conversation instead of explaining himself can become tiring.

I see why he gets scared when the woman sends text messages to Chloe and seems to call the police, but sometimes I want him to calm down and think of his arguments. Then we have Connie Britton, who creates an eerie atmosphere in the show. Ellen does not have to behave in any overtly threatening manner in order to create an uneasy atmosphere. In fact, she seems very much at ease with herself, interacts with the staff at the school and goes on acting as a perfectly normal mother and principal. It is her normalcy that makes Sonny’s case even more eerie.

If she were acting suspicious all the time in front of everyone, then the mystery element of the show would be gone. The fact that Mallory and Weldon gain significance in Sonny’s quest is one thing that I really like about this part of the movie. First of all, Mallory’s history with Sonny is not simple, especially taking into consideration how much confusion and misunderstanding followed their relationship when she was dating his best friend’s sister. Secondly, her role is more significant than merely becoming a friend who always listens and believes what the protagonist says.

As for Weldon, he is a character with whom Sonny can talk about his problems and whose help in looking for an explanation will be useful. Moreover, Vogel’s disbelief in his best friend’s mother being a duplicate brings more conflict into the plot. Another reason why I am excited about the next episodes is the mystery behind the body. This information does not seem to have any connection with Sonny’s life, but the way it is presented makes me think that there is something bigger going on behind the scenes. Another reason to be cautious is that in episode two, the woman uses Ellen’s computer and takes out some money from her savings account.

This is exactly what I was expecting to happen because it provides a direction to Sonny’s fear and does not provide all the answers at once. The police’s questions about Sonny’s house being broken into on the night of the accident raise another question. The only doubt is that the series often makes Sonny get into a loop of being panicky, rejected and fleeing from somewhere. I would like it if he had more chances in the upcoming episodes to explore what was going on instead of constantly convincing people of his problem. However, the supporting cast members, peculiar details regarding Ellen, and the find near the river make the story dynamic enough for me to be engaged.

Hulu Phony Review: Summing Up

Overall, the 2026 series Phony turned out to be quite an interesting piece of work for me. I was ready for yet another variation of a rather banal supernatural thriller, but the result became even more untraditional. This show has an interesting plot line, a charismatic main actor, and a number of unanswered questions that turn the first two episodes into something bigger. I would like to learn more about the identity of the mysterious lady, the fate of Ellen, and the connection between the corpse and Sonny’s research. It will be interesting to see what this story evolves into in the future.
