Less of a Stranger Review: Directed by Kristoffer Rus, Mniej obcy is a Polish biographical drama based on the life of guitarist and composer Jan Borysewicz, best known as a founding member of the rock band Lady Pank. Mikołaj Bukrewicz plays the younger Jan, with Mikołaj Matczak portraying him in another stage of his life, while Patryk Pietrzak plays lyricist Andrzej Mogielnicki, Hubert Miłkowski appears as Paweł Mścisławski, Krzysztof Oleksyn as Edmund Stasiak and Mikołaj Matczak as Jarosław Szlagowski.
Less of a Stranger Review
Netflix’s Less of a Stranger starts in 1983 when Lady Pank is already well-known, and Jan is warned by officials not to play the band’s provocative song “Less Than Zero.” Of course, Jan does everything he is not supposed to do. Then the film goes back to his childhood years to illustrate the roots of such behaviour.
First of all, Jan grows up with an ill mother, a detached father, and a strong bond with his brother Andrzej. He finds music as an escape and purpose in life. Having received a guitar from his brother, he immediately demonstrates great talent in music. However, his growing career results in a conflict with his brother. The loss of his brother becomes a tragic moment in his life, and the film shows how such loss, together with his attitude towards authority, religion, alcohol and drugs, influences his musical career.
One thing that has worked well for me in the Netflix series Less of a Stranger is how the protagonist’s musical career is not portrayed as a success story from the very beginning. Jan is determined since childhood, but his character is equally crucial to understanding his path. Being an aspiring musician, Jan wants to be good at guitar playing, and he wants to do everything independently. This trait enables him to create Lady Pank, but it also endangers his career.

What I especially liked about this Polish biographical movie Less of a Stranger was the way that it ties Jan’s personal experiences to his attitude towards the Polish authorities and their rebellion against them. When Jan and Mogiel face the harsh reality of martial law in Poland, it is no longer just an occurrence that takes place in the background. Instead, it plays a role in the process of creating his songs. He transforms his anger at what is happening into music and makes his rebellion personal. His music becomes an opportunity for him to speak out.
Mogiel’s connection with Jan is yet another aspect of the narrative that I find fascinating. While Mogiel does not serve merely to help Jan achieve fame, he is part of those few individuals who believe in Jan’s musical aspirations from the very beginning. Therefore, Jan’s conflicts with him have greater significance. The struggles Jan faces do not involve only his enemies or the government but also people who are close to him and get tired of his decisions.
It must also be noted that the Polish movie Less of a Stranger makes it clear enough that the main obstacle to Jan’s development could be Jan himself. He gains confidence due to his success, but the more successful he becomes, the more self-destructive his confidence turns out to be. All of the pressures around him, for instance, the efforts made by the government to ruin his image, only make the preexisting issues of drug abuse and excessive drinking even worse. The scene of Jan’s performance during Children’s Day is especially important as it demonstrates that Jan’s actions were not a complete surprise, as his character had been preparing for such a breakdown for some time.

Mikołaj Bukrewicz makes young Jan convincing due to his anger that appears before he learns how to control it. Mikołaj Matczak succeeds in presenting another side of Jan, which shows its effect on him over time because of the effect of fame and other problems in his life. These two actors succeeded in presenting Jan in a different way than the stereotype of the rebellious rock musician. It was clear to me why people admired him and got annoyed with him at the same time.
The Netflix Polish movie Less of a Stranger fails at some points in its development of some of its central themes, and that is what lets me down. Religion is one of the crucial elements for Jan’s inner development throughout the film and especially after the death of his brother, but I wish this element was examined with greater depth in the film instead of just being another stop on his way. The political context is quite appealing in this movie because it adds a historical angle to the plot, but there are times when it seems that things happen to the characters instead of shaping them.

Netflix Less of a Stranger Review: Summing Up
Overall, 2026 Less of a Stranger film is definitely not a terrible music biography. It has an interesting main character, some great performances, and sufficient conflict to maintain the plot. All I can say is that I wish the film had done a better job of exploring some of its most intriguing ideas rather than glossing over them in such a rapid fashion. There are definitely enough interesting elements in Jan Borysewicz’s life for a captivating movie, but this one is not quite there yet.
