Clean Up Company Review

Amazon MX Player series Clean Up Company is set in the fictitious town of Saribgunj in Bengal and revolves around the life of three friends who become entangled in some weird happenings after one of the kidnappings they carry out goes wrong, resulting in someone’s death. The three, Goldie, Raju and Swapan, find themselves with the body of the deceased that they need to dispose of and soon enough find themselves not only in danger but also in a profitable business venture in getting rid of such corpses. Access to Goldie’s family’s brick kiln helps them dispose of bodies, while Manisha’s skills as a mortician help make things much easier for them.

Exactly what made Amazon MX Player’s Clean Up Company so appealing to me is the oddity of its premise. The premise of three average guys accidentally entering the body disposal racket presents a great deal of possibility for a novel crime show. It was easy for me to see how amusing it would be to watch the hilarity of incompetent people dealing with dead bodies, their fear of getting caught, the sheer weirdness of trying to make money from such an endeavour, and how the decision would affect their everyday lives. However, it seems that the show loses interest in its own premise much faster than I did.

The three characters work well when the plot allows them to move forward by means of friendship with each other. They are not similar personalities, which adds some charm to the group. Goldie seems to be less active and feels some discomfort with respect to what they are doing, and this is why he becomes interesting in his way of moving into the criminal world. Raju is hungrier and more impatient. While Goldie sees some threats, Raju is interested in opportunities.

This is why these differences create some kind of friction. Swapan is expected to have some ambitions to become a collector, which is why Swapan’s involvement of Swapan in such a business should have been more interesting. But how do you connect ambitions of having a respectable career in the government to removing bodies for criminals?

This is perhaps the most annoying thing about the Amazon MX Player Clean Up Company series. The characters seem like they are constantly being manipulated by the main crime storyline and do not actually make their choices based on who they are. After the gang feud between Sultan and Dharam starts becoming more significant, the strange enterprise that got the three friends to know each other becomes secondary. It is clear why the show grows because there is political power, an upcoming election, a cop who is trying to clean up the town, and criminals who are fighting for power, but that growth takes away from the personality of the show.

Mejda is one of those characters who gets a boost from this plotline. Sitesh Burman makes Mejda a very menacing figure whom I enjoyed a lot. He does not have to act like some kind of boisterous gangster to make himself intimidating enough. There is something about how he does things and acts – there is some calculation behind everything. This is mostly due to the fact that he thinks like both a politician and a gangster at the same time. His ambition to go beyond what he already is makes his motives clear.

Saswata Chatterjee makes an equally competent Indranath, especially because he adds a new dimension to the character. The SP, as portrayed by Saswata Chatterjee, is not depicted as a cold-blooded police officer, and at times, the element of humour helps because Chatterjee knows how to maintain balance and not take the SP out of context. There is an element of contrast between Mejda and the SP; the former represents the authority of the town, while the latter controls its functioning.

The three protagonists contribute too. Vishal Jethwa adds to Raju an edgy energy that makes his increasingly dangerous decisions realistic, while Ajitesh Gupta adds vulnerability to Goldie’s awkwardness. Swapan, played by Amey Wagh, offers another charm, even though I was hoping that the character would have been given more substance beyond being part of the three amigos. Siddhi Potdar is natural as Manisha, and I appreciated that she has a mortician background that is tied to the basic premise rather than being an entirely unrelated romantic sub-plot.

Then comes the character of Ravi Kishan. The oddity about his presence stems from the fact that his name implies a much greater importance than what is assigned to him by the series. The existence of Borda and his association with the story lead one to form certain expectations which are not met in any way. I would have wanted either more for him or nothing at all.

I also had problems with the tonal changes. At some point, it appears that Clean Up Company gets that its own premise is absurd enough for it to be funny, but then it suddenly gets incredibly violent and serious. At times, it looks like the gore is just used to demonstrate how brutal the crime world can be rather than add any emotional depth to the situation. Still, I appreciated the authentic Bengali setting of the small town. Saribgunj is a place with its own unique character.

Amazon MX Player Clean Up Company Review: Summing Up

In the end, my impression of the Clean Up Company series was that of an extremely good show buried deep within it. I appreciated the concept and liked some of the characters and the acting, especially by Jisshu Sengupta, Saswata Chatterjee and Vishal Jethwa, made me glued to the screen. However, the narrative seems to get more and more complicated rather than getting any better. The corpse disposal industry should have been its biggest advantage, but it becomes completely overtaken by gang politics, police investigations and other subplots.
