The Netflix German film My Best Friend His Girlfriend and Me revolves around the relationship between two best buddies, Olli and Matze, who have almost built their entire adult lives around each other. These two people work and live together and spend many years planning a perfect world tour. But all that goes out the window when Matze starts falling in love with Rebecca. While Matze is head over heels in love with her, Rebecca finds herself battling Olli’s babyish nature and influence over Matze right from day one. Things turn out to be a competition right from the time Rebecca starts living with them because Olli considers her to be the one who will steal away his best buddy.
I found the central conflict very hard since Netflix’s My Best Friend His Girlfriend and Me constantly tries to force me to side with Olli or Rebecca despite not liking any of them at all. Olli is extremely immature, and the film doesn’t try to conceal this fact from the audience. He acts as though he cannot understand that his best friend is growing up. Unfortunately, rather than making this immaturity amusing, the film constantly uses it to create conflict after conflict.
The world trip is particularly significant in that it helps one to see the reason behind Olli’s insecurity regarding Rebecca. It is not just because Matze is having a girlfriend; rather, Olli feels that something he and Matze had always dreamt of during their childhood days is now going to be snatched away from them. I think I would have been able to relate to such a feeling of insecurity. There is definitely something very relatable in seeing your most intimate friend bond with a lover. But Olli deals with this insecurity in the most inappropriate way possible.
And it is here that Rebecca should have done a better job of providing a counterbalance for the movie. In fact, Rebecca herself turns out to be frustrating to a certain extent. I could understand at least part of her frustration since Olli really acts like a bad boy. At least, he is really rude to her boss, which explains her fear of Matze being affected by such a person. Moreover, the story with Schmitti getting intoxicated and acting silly proves the level of fun that Olli brings into people’s lives. Rebecca is certainly right about wanting at least some maturity from her friends.
However, she goes too far in her actions and behaviour in the movie, so much that I stopped considering her to be the one trying to defend her relationship but rather the one controlling her relationship. It is not just that she dislikes Olli; she seems to be determined to change the entire dynamic in the friend group.
What frustrated me the most was that Matze sometimes comes off as being the one with the least amount of control over his own relationship. While the whole plot revolves around Olli and Rebecca vying for his attention, sometimes the movie fails to portray him as an active character in the conflict. In the end, Matze becomes nothing more than the object of competition between his best friend and girlfriend.
Another problem I had with the German movie My Best Friend His Girlfriend and Me was its use of comedy. The rivalry between the two gets increasingly escalated, resulting in Olli and Rebecca constantly trying to undermine each other, as well as such bizarre moments as toasters exploding and people having dyed teeth. Usually, such escalations can make a movie funny and chaotic. In this case, it just made me wonder what these grown-ups were doing.
Another unpleasant message lies hidden behind some scenes in the film. The movie appears to be focused on the notion that getting older involves losing something from your previous self. However, the director chooses to explore this topic in a rather simplistic confrontation between male bonding and love affairs. In this case, the story about Schmitti and Antje becomes evident. Schmitti’s readiness to comply with the demands of his wife is seen as an important part of maturation into a better man; however, I do not see how it could be true.
However, I liked the way in which the Netflix film My Best Friend His Girlfriend and Me realises that friendship is bound to undergo some changes as people begin dating. Indeed, it is an important point, and Olli’s fear of losing Matze may be called the most emotional thing about his character. It should also be mentioned that Kostja Ullmann provides Olli with such an amount of energy that it becomes quite obvious that there is a real person beneath all his childishness. David Kross plays Matze in a more subtle manner while Janina Uhse adds sufficient strength to Rebecca’s character.

Overall, My Best Friend His Girlfriend and Me was not entertaining but irritating to watch. I did not dislike the idea; in fact, I believe that the idea is the best aspect of this film. Unfortunately, the film takes what could be an interesting situation to explore the theme of friendship and makes it a repetitive fight of people doing things that get on your nerves. What I was expecting from this film was to find some balance between the themes of friendship, love and maturing, but the film left Olli and Rebecca cornered.
