Netflix’s Don’t Say Good Luck revolves around Sophie, a shy high-school student who, out of a sudden interest in drama, finds herself in the limelight when she wins the starring role of Waitress in the school production. This should be one of those special moments for her that she is supposed to always remember, given that her crush, Jack, also plays the main role in the play.
However, there is more to Sophie’s happiness in light of what happens at home, where Elizabeth, Sophie’s mother, who was previously diagnosed with cancer, receives an even harsher diagnosis of the disease. Not wanting Sophie to suffer the burden of her illness, Elizabeth does not immediately share this news with her daughter, giving her a chance to experience this special moment in her life. For instance, in the Netflix film Don’t Say Good Luck, the girl’s aspirations are not just theatre, which is only a side story in teenage life without any connection to the family problems.
The two aspects of her life have a constant influence on each other. For instance, when Sophie goes for her audition, she already knows that something terrible is happening to her mother. However, Sophie does not let her feelings get the better of her; instead, manages to transform them into the audition. It becomes clear why Ms Parker sees something unique about her. Sophie is not a confident person by nature and decided one day that she wanted to be the main character of the school musical. She just realises that performing allows her to express all her hidden feelings.
That way, her quick ascension to the top position becomes more significant than merely coincidental. On the other hand, it is also good that the movie does not paint the theatre industry as a totally glamorous one. Getting the lead role brings new challenges to Sophie’s life – she has to cope with the responsibility of starring in a major play, act out romantic scenes with Jack despite her discomfort with him, and face the jealousy of Mallory.
Then there is the toll that it takes on the friendship between Sophie and Carolyn. While Carolyn is in the process of discovering herself, the movie wisely allocates her enough emotional depth so that she does not appear as just the best friend of Sophie. However, for me, the most appealing aspect of Netflix’s Don’t Say Good Luck movie lies in the bond between Sophie and Elizabeth.
Although Elizabeth’s choice not to reveal her illness to Sophie is reasonable and even justified, she is doing so to protect her child, who is no longer at the age where she could not grasp what is going on around her. This paradox makes their situation especially heartbreaking, as Elizabeth wants Sophie to enjoy being a kid, while Sophie is being made aware of the fact that childhood is fleeting. Melanie Lynskey plays the character with great talent. The role of Elizabeth is not that of a tragic mother whose only purpose is to bring tears to people’s eyes. She remains a mother trying to manage a deli, raise children, helping a husband keep up with new circumstances.
Sunny Sandler turns out to be an excellent match for her. Sophie may be clumsy, emotional and self-centred, which is exactly why she looks very believable. What I particularly enjoyed about the character was that Sophie’s arc is not about transforming into another person. She remains a teenage girl who tries to understand herself, just forced to grow up too fast.
The ensemble cast also contributes to the success of the film in not being entirely focused on the mother and daughter bond. Jack could have been made into a typical dreamy boyfriend character, but the film provides him with enough ambivalence to make him a real teenager. The chemistry between Jack and Sophie works due to the fact that both characters lack experience in their romantic relationship. Another unexpected pleasure in watching this film came from Mallory. At first, she seemed to be a clichéd mean girl, but gradually we get to understand the insecurities behind her ambitions.
It is the way the film treats all its characters, and those characters, despite seeming unpleasant at first, become understandable in their actions. Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi also do a good job as Sophie’s grandparents. In particular, Steve Buscemi’s character, Dale, turns out to be one of the characters who provide Sophie with some honest advice from an emotional perspective when she really needs someplace to dump all her emotions.
My main problem with the Don’t Say Good Luck film is that at some points the latter seems to get too sentimental. The start of the film gives hope that there will be more humour, more satirical remarks about high school theatre in general and Sophie’s competition in particular. That is not really an issue; however, it does create some predictability for certain scenes in the film. There are times when I could tell where the movie was going to take me emotionally. Yet, there is no denying the fact that most of these scenes are successful because of the acting.
The music scenes in Don’t Say Good Luck, in particular, hold significance in this regard. Sophie’s voice is not made out to be incredibly perfect in the film, and I enjoyed that. She is made to sound like the teenage girl with immense talent, but she is not immediately a Broadway performer. When she delivers the emotional performance at the end of the film, it all ties together.
Netflix Don’t Say Good Luck Review: Summing Up
The 2026 Don’t Say Good Luck film is not an innovative coming-of-age story, and there are times when the sentimentality comes off as being rather clichéd. But there were enough heartwarming aspects about the connection between Sophie and Elizabeth to keep my interest in the story intact. Sunny Sandler provides the movie with a very grounded core character, and Melanie Lynskey adds the needed subtlety to Elizabeth’s storyline.
