Why Did Ruth Begin to Suspect Martin?
In Netflix’s The Truthers film, Ruth’s suspicion toward Martin was not caused by any one-time occurrence but rather a string of alarming incidents following her mother’s unexpected passing. Having already relocated to Berlin two years ago, Ruth became detached from her parents, never answering their calls. Nevertheless, just prior to Lucia’s death, the woman continuously tried reaching out to her daughter via phone calls, messages and emotional recordings.
Unbeknownst to Ruth, she failed to answer all of them until Martin called her and told her that Lucia had died due to falling in the bathroom. It was only when she came back home and heard her last messages that Ruth could no longer doubt that Lucia had something vital to say before her death. In light of Martin’s unusual conduct, it is obvious why the woman started suspecting that Lucia’s death was not an accident.
Ruth’s suspicions were only made worse by her findings on just how obsessed Martin had become with the conspiracy theories involving the pharmaceutical company Certyx, which he thought kidnapped and did experiments on children illegally. Lucia had refused to believe such things and had become more and more concerned about Martin’s mental condition. Ruth started thinking if all those disputes about the conspiracy theories had turned into something much worse.
Ruth’s suspicions about Martin grew due to him hiding in the attic, having surveillance cameras around the house, his hatred of medicine, and the fact that he was close friends with Berta, another conspirator. All of those discoveries made Ruth believe that Martin had lost it completely, and she convinced herself that he had killed Lucia to prevent her from interfering with his obsession. Even though other people tried to dissuade her, Ruth was so eager to prove him guilty that she began considering everything suspicious as proof against him.
Who Was Berta and What Was Her Connection to Martin?
One person who had wholeheartedly accepted Martin’s theories about Certyx was Berta was his staunchest supporter as he went more and more insane with each passing day. Their friendship seemed suspicious for the outsider due to the amount of time they spent together, especially after Lucia’s death. From the start, Ruth felt that Berta was carrying on an illicit relationship with her father and had made her father believe some crazy conspiracy theories. The fears were further fueled by the revelation of Berta’s ex-husband that Berta had a habit of being obsessively spying on her own family members.
When she found out that Martin had even put up some hidden cameras around his house, she became sure that Berta had led him to paranoia and dictatorship. Nonetheless, as the whole story gradually unfolded, it came to light that the role of Berta was not that of the mastermind but of an individual who possessed similar beliefs about what was going on as Martin. It is important to note that Berta firmly believed in her opinion and thought that the company Certyx was kidnapping children and covering up their crimes, as Martin did.
Instead of doubting each other’s opinions, both of them kept reinforcing their ideas, thus forming an environment where every single coincidence turned into some evidence of a conspiracy. Due to this common belief system, Berta and Martin decided to launch an attack against the headquarters of the company, believing that they were saving some innocent children from criminals.
Did Martin Really Kill Lucia?
No, Martin didn’t kill Lucia. Indeed, while the movie is spending its running time making Ruth and the viewer doubt Martin’s innocence, the real tragedy is far sadder than a premeditated murder. Coming back to the family, Ruth is facing too much evidence which clearly shows that it was her father who killed the woman. First of all, his fixation on Certyx, his insane actions, secret cameras in the house, and the desperate calls from Lucia to Ruth prior to her death suggest that the man murdered his wife after refusing to share her point of view on his conspiracy theories.
However, Ruth’s concerns become even greater when she begins feeling dizzy after having a tea prepared by her father, suspecting that he wants to poison her too. At that point, the woman understands that she is living with a maniac who is ready to get rid of everyone who can stand in his way. But finally, it is established that the death of Lucia was precisely what the authorities suspected initially; namely, an accident. Indeed, Martin’s increasing paranoia was making his wife’s life extremely difficult, but at no point did he beat or kill her.
The fact is that before her death, Lucia had found out about the complex plan that Martin was devising against Certyx. Knowing how obsessed with all his ideas her husband was, Lucia got depressed and resorted to drinking in order to drown her sorrows. Her excessive drinking resulted in her falling down and dying in the bathroom.
How did Martin Die at the End of The Truthers?
A tragic end comes to Martin’s story since by the time Ruth comes to understand that he was not behind the death of Lucia, he is totally engrossed in carrying out his plan to expose Certyx. After Martin finds out that Ruth had been sifting through his secret attic and doesn’t trust him anymore, he becomes convinced that the pharmaceutical company has taken control of his daughter and wants to thwart him from his plans. Thinking that he didn’t have much time left, Martin binds Ruth in their house along with Berta and heads to carry out the plan that he had been planning for months now.
Using Aron’s access card, they manage to enter the Certyx facility in an attempt to uncover the underground tunnels used to kidnap children. Distraught at what her father is set to do based on his misconception, she runs away and informs Aron and tries to stop him from doing it. However, they come too late because Martin and Berta had already exploded the building, resulting in its partial collapse. Both Martin and Berta are buried under the ruins and are dead.
Was Alejandro Really Abducted by Certyx?
Alejandro’s abduction is at the centre of Martin’s conspiracy theory throughout much of the film. He comes to believe that the little boy has been abducted by Certyx in order to conduct some sort of illicit human experiments within the facility. The truth, however, is even more tragic and mundane. As Ruth attempts to prevent her father from doing what he needs to do, she remembers that she had accidentally cut herself on something sharp while swimming in the lake. It was, in fact, Alejandro’s bike of Alejandro, who had been there all along.
This revelation totally alters the way she perceives the case. Alejandro had not been kidnapped, but had probably died due to a sad accident after drowning in the lake. There was no proof whatsoever that linked the kidnapping with either Certyx or with any illegal scientific experiments. This realisation is heartbreaking since it reveals just how an ordinary sad event had been blown out of proportion and twisted into a major plot. It is by the time Ruth uncovers the truth that Martin had already made a fatal mistake based on the delusions he harboured all along.
What Happened to Ruth in the Ending of The Truthers?
Ruth’s story reaches its climax at the end of the movie, but not in the sense she had imagined. Having spent several days searching for proof of Martin’s involvement in the murder of Lucia, Ruth now understands that her father was innocent of this murder. After her father’s death, Ruth makes up her mind to abandon Mieres and start a new life. She sells the house, leaves Aron and goes to live in Madrid, as she wants to rid herself of the painful memories related to both the deaths of her parents. It is also revealed at the end of the movie that Ruth has taken up swimming again, an activity which she used to do together with Lucia.
Even after Ruth leaves town, Martin’s tale continues to take on a life of its own, with people who do not believe him to be dead and think that he is alive and fighting against the authorities in secret. Ruth comes to realise how others glorify her father without considering the facts, and comes to the realisation that while she has finally accepted the facts of reality and begun to heal, others have continued to subscribe to the dangerous delusions that killed her father.
What Does The Truthers Ending Really Mean?
The Netflix Spanish movie The Truthers attempts to communicate that reality tends to slip away from people when they get wrapped up in fear, sorrow, and misinterpretation of facts. The conclusion of the story underscores this point once Martin is dead. In spite of the fact that his body was discovered by the police amidst the wreckage of the Certyx company building, there are those who would rather not accept that he is really dead. Instead, they turn him into a legend on the Internet, stating that he is alive and battling with organisations.
Believers do not accept the truth but rather change the narrative to suit their already formed worldview. With Ruth’s point of view, the reader sees how dangerous such an attitude is, both because it is a source of misinformation but also because it breaks relationships, alienates one from people who care for him/her, and may end up causing tragic outcomes that cannot be undone.
