Wanting to live out the rest of his days peacefully, Num gets embroiled in the same vicious cycle when he watches the innocents fall victim to heartless loan sharks. With his previous associations clashing with his intentions of making things right, Num has to face his fellow debt collectors, setting him on a path full of emotional burdens.
Netflix’s The Debt Collector made it quite apparent that redemption is never an easy feat. Right from the very beginning of the film, the viewer understands that Num is not trying to find forgiveness because he thinks he deserves it; all he wishes to do is stop creating further guilt in his guilt-ridden life. This emotional background of the film lends it much more importance than it would have gained had it revolved around revenge alone.
Num definitely tops the list when considering the strengths of the Thai movie The Debt Collector. It’s not that he suddenly becomes a hero but that he faces the repercussions of the man he once was. There are times when he chooses not to act violently when he knows that he could easily have done so. This, in itself, says so much regarding the extent of the change he has been through. It becomes even more important since he is constantly reminded of it by the people who have suffered at his hands.
The performance by Nadech Kugimiya for this particular character is rather reserved. In other words, he uses neither emotional breakdowns nor any other forms of exaggeration. His character speaks through his facial expressions, his tiredness, and lengthy pauses. Nadech is brilliant at playing Num while fighting, but when he needs to do no fighting but just speak, then he is very fascinating. The thing that does not matter is whether he is defending others or whether he thinks about all those bad things that he has done before.
The secondary characters also contribute to the development of the emotional struggle. Po by Daou Pittaya Saenchua does not come off as particularly complex as an antagonist, but he plays it so well that you want to hate his character. The sheer fact that he embraces all the cruelty means that he serves as a good foil to Num. Their interactions seem to be the two sides of the same coin. Po is who Num decided not to become, and that adds more emotion to their struggle.
Also, I am glad that the Netflix film The Debt Collector depicts common people who suffer from the illegal activities of loan sharks in a proper way. Instead of exploiting such people for their own purposes, the movie depicts enough scenes showing how intimidation, fear, and the need for money affect the lives of normal people. It is precisely because of that that the story of Num acquires its emotional dimension. Num’s motive is not associated with his personal glory but with the desire to save others from the same fate.
The fight scenes themselves are enjoyable but not overdone. The fight choreography is more grounded and realistic than anything overly stylised, which works well for the realism of the film. All the fights are painful and show clear results from their pain. Not glorifying violence, the film shows it to be an unpleasant experience that does harm to all involved.
One more aspect I enjoyed about this 2026 Thai film The Debt Collector, was visual restraint. There are no special effects in cinematography; rather, it features neutral colours and background scenery that reflects the depressive atmosphere. The restrained approach combines with the use of natural dialogue and its pauses, which allow one to feel emotions rather than proceed to the following action scene.
