A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Lee Kwon and adapted from Kang Ji-young’s novel Sarinjaui Syopingmol, Disney+ drama 킬러들의 쇼핑몰 시즌2 reunites Lee Dong-wook as Jeong Jin-man and Kim Hye-jun as Jeong Ji-an, alongside Jo Han-sun, Geum Hae-na, Lee Tae-young, Jung Yun-ha and others.
A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 1 Recap
Right at the beginning of Episode 1 of A Shop for Killers Season 2, we find ourselves in a state of confusion. In Babylon’s highly secured building, Bale enters and attacks an employee there viciously. A while later, a second Bale appears on the screen, thus implying that there is definitely something wrong. However, the secret is revealed very quickly, since the masked person takes off his mask, and it becomes clear that it was actually Jeong Jin-man. The story goes back in time to tell how it became possible.
In A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 1, we are taken back in time when everyone thought that Jin-man was dead. The world laments the demise of the shop owner after his body was found, but the actual Jin-man works behind the scenes. He teams up with the police officer, Park Jin-woo, Pasin, and the North Korean escapee, Cheol-seung, to execute a risky plan on Babylon. Because Jin-man has tricked them into thinking he is dead, he realises that there will be limited time for him before the organisation finds out the truth. His goal is simple—he needs to steal the heavily guarded server belonging to Babylon, which has all their confidential information.
Each aspect of the mission is meticulously planned. Cheol-seung clones the security credentials, breaches the surveillance system and goes further to make an actual Bale mask for Jin-man. On the other hand, the group researches the daily routine at Babylon, being aware that every day, the server is taken out of its underwater hideout to perform some maintenance activities. The mission starts with their infiltration in a garbage truck from which they get weapons and explosives to use in the next phase of the mission. As the mission progresses, alarming information comes to Jin-man regarding Babylon’s attack on Ji-an.
The closer the operation gets to completion, the more things begin to fall apart. The cover of Jin-man is threatened to be stripped away due to security personnel discovering discrepancies, and he is then identified within the armoury by the combat robots. Simultaneously, Cheol-seung takes his chances by going down into the server room right when the plan starts falling apart. By the end of A Shop for Killers season 2 kdrama ep 1, it does not disappoint when delivering exactly what the audience members were expecting.
Jin-man confronts the true identity of Bale in the most intense hand-to-hand combat atop a huge rice silo, with neither side giving in to each other. While Bale manages to survive by hiding away in the mass of grains below him, Cheol-seung manages to blow up the underground chamber to get hold of the priceless server. Jin-man escapes from the silo through a helicopter carrying the database stolen from Babylon at the end of the episode to connect again with Season 1, in which he meets up with Ji-an. But the last scene in Osaka presents one more mystery character of Babylon.
A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 of A Shop for Killers season 2 opens not long after Babylon explores the area where Jin-man’s previous hideout was. Bale and Yong-han think they might finally track him down, but as usual, Jin-man manages to be a step ahead of them. An ambush trap with bombs takes them by surprise, and there is a massive explosion, which kills a number of people. Jin-man observes the situation from afar, contemplating killing Bale with his sniper rifle, but gives up as soon as he notices that Bale is inside an armoured vehicle.
After this, the story skips a year and centres on Ji-an, who is now trying to live quietly without all the violence that she had experienced before. As she was jogging through the tranquil village where she lived, she recalls the passionate conversation between her and Jin-man when they met again. Jin-man confesses that everything he did – including engaging in the arms trade – was because of his intention to save her. She cannot just forget about all the things that happened overnight, so she decides to start a new life with a new name, money from her uncle, and a backpack containing emergency supplies from Brother.
The world seems more peaceful, but Ji-an does not leave her past behind. Her house becomes a fortress complete with cameras and traps. After hearing her screaming in a nightmare, Woo-jin accidentally intrudes on her property and becomes the latest victim of her defences. Once Ji-an realises that he is no danger to her, she lets him go free. This demonstrates how much she is still living with the effects of her trauma. Even after he has left, she watches his every move from her cameras, unsure whether she can trust him or not.
Elsewhere, Jin-man engages in another round of dangerous political manoeuvring by trying to undermine Babylon. By reaching out to In-seob, he reveals his knowledge of the agents who were put there to watch their meeting, and at the same time, he gives away some classified information related to operations by Babylon.
While Jin-man and In-seob do not have an open confrontation between them, they try to negotiate through the layers of suspicions. At the same time, there are big developments within the ranks of Babylon itself, as Kusanagi shows up to lead the East Asia branch and proves that she is going to handle Jin-man alone. It is not long before Yong-han himself gets eliminated by the cold-blooded killer Jasper.
In the last part of A Shop for Killers season 2 ep 2, another mystery is added to the life of Ji-an. She goes to the city to get her broken phone fixed but discovers that an unknown person has been tracking her to several places. Not knowing who to trust, she calls Woo-jin, who helps her back home. It’s then that Ji-an finds it disturbing when the Murder Help notification pops up on Woo-jin’s phone and wonders if his acts were indeed kind to her after all. But before she could do anything about it, elsewhere, Brother hurries to tell Jin-man about a new twenty million dollar bounty on Ji-an on the Murthe Help app.
A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 1-2 Review
The first aspect of these starting episodes of season 2 of A Shop for Killers that caught my attention is the fact that this series did not simply carry on where Season 1 left off. Rather, it addressed one of the most important questions that remained unanswered by showing how Jin-man was spending his time when Ji-an struggled for survival. I think it was a good choice to make, as it solves some of the questions while at the same time not taking anything away from the mysteriousness of it all. The rhythm of the season is slower than that of Season 1, but still, every scene seems to lead to something greater.
Lee Dong-wook yet again manages to show just how cool Jin-man is by portraying him in such an effortless manner. Even without saying much, he owns every single scene simply by the way he carries himself. Kim Hye-jun must receive equal credit because Ji-an is definitely not the same person she was before all of the hardships that she went through in the previous season. Ji-an is no longer afraid and is struggling to stay alive. She is now always wary of those around her and obviously has many wounds to show for it. The uncle-niece dynamic will continue to be the emotional focus of the series despite the separation in their scenes.
And then there is the action of the K-drama A Shop for Killers season 2. It is well-thought-out and very enjoyable to watch when the team infiltrates the facility of Babylon, whereas the fight between Jin-man and Bale is probably the best sequence seen so far. Although the rotating camera during the bridge fight looked like an interesting experiment, sometimes it was a bit disorienting. However, the choreography was excellent.
Jo Han-sun successfully manages to make Bale look really threatening each time he shows up on screen, Jung Yun-ha instantly creates interest with the appearance of Kusanagi, and the rest of the cast, such as Geum Hae-na, Lee Tae-young, and other Jin-man’s companions, keep the world looking bigger than in Season 1.
A Shop for Killers Season 2 Review: Summing Up
Something else I enjoyed was the fact that this show continuously makes me think of each one of the characters. Woo-jin comes off as such a kindhearted person, but the shocking revelation about the Murder Help notification made me see him from a totally different perspective. Now I am not sure if I can really trust him, which is just what this show does so well. Since Babylon now has new leaders, Ji-an is under another big bounty while Jin-man prepares for a much bigger battle.
