Blossoms of Power Review: Directed by Zhong Qing and adapted from the novel Wo Hua Kai Hou Bai Hua Sha by Jin Huang. The historical Chinese drama 百花杀 stars Meng Ziyi as Shen Xi He/Gu Qingzhi and He Yu as Crown Prince Xiao Huayong, alongside Fan Shuaiqi, Lai Weiming and an impressive supporting cast.
Blossoms of Power Episode 1-4 Recap
Episode 1 of Blossoms of Power begins on a tragic note as the Gu family gets massacred due to political disputes. Gu Qingzhi, who is the sole survivor of the massacre and the consort of Prince Xin, takes her own life instead of leading a life full of embarrassment. But instead of dying, her spirit ends up in a peculiar world wherein it seems that destiny will be rewritten. Meanwhile, Shen Xi He, a princess who was born in a royal family and lived a luxurious life until then, travels to the capital to celebrate the birthday of the Empress Dowager, but gets tricked by her loyal maid Ling Long and is thrown into the river.
Not wanting to make the same mistakes again in her second life, Qingzhi starts exercising her power right away in shaping her own destiny. When she meets Crown Prince Xiao Huayong on her way to the imperial city, she does not merely return him the medicine because he needs it to save himself from the slow death caused by the poison that is poisoning him. Instead, she plays with his intelligence and shows that she is no longer the little princess everybody knew before.
As we delve into Blossoms of Power Episode 2, the web of palace intrigues gets even more complicated. We find out through flashbacks that Huayong’s illness came as a result of poisoning when he was young, an event which has never been solved. On the other hand, Qingzhi finds himself involved with many princes like Prince Lie and Prince Xin, and another mysterious item called the Rouge Ledger is introduced in court as one of the greatest secrets. The ledger has evidence that could unveil all sorts of corruption and crimes committed by various individuals, thus becoming the thing that everybody needs.
In Blossoms of Power Episode 3, Qingzhi has finally reached the capital city of the Empire and immediately finds herself in a position where she is making a lot of enemies for herself. First, she embarrasses Lady Xiao, who has attacked the imperial family, but at the same time tries to find Ling Long, a girl who murdered her in her previous life. Back at the palace, Emperor Youning calls all the princes and declares that Qingzhi can choose any of them to marry.
The rest of the princes try to win her heart by showering her with presents and making various deals with her, but Huayong takes an entirely different tactic. Without trying to force himself upon her, he wins her trust by pretending to share her love for flowers just to understand her better.
With Blossoms of Power Episode 4, things start heating up even more as Qingzhi starts unravelling the corruption one by one. This means that she reveals the underlying motivations of Prince Chang Yu and ruins the well-planned strategy of this Prince to win Qingzhi’s love. Meanwhile, Huayong starts finding out the facts of his poisoning, and Qingzhi starts attacking the faction of Prince Kang with the help of the Rouge Ledger.
While Qingzhi does not relent in her treatment of corrupt officials, there is another side of hers that appears in the episode when Huayong gets poisoned and remembering his kind act from before, she saves him using the Immortal Vine without asking for any recognition for herself. Episode 4 of Blossoms of Power ends with the introduction of Bu Shulin, who pretends to be an imperial guard before forming a shaky alliance with Qingzhi.
Blossoms of Power Review
The truth is, I really had high hopes for this show based on the trailers that I saw before, and after watching the first four episodes, I can say that my high expectations have been met. Chinese drama Blossoms of Power does not hurry into making the main couple get into a relationship; rather, it takes its time to make a very intriguing game of strategy out of each and every talk. Qingzhi was the one whom I liked very much, as she always seemed a step ahead of everyone else.
Meng Ziyi possesses her role in Qingzhi wholeheartedly. The actress portrays the character with confidence, conveying not only the suffering of a person who carries scars from an unfortunate past but also the intellect of a woman who will not be taken advantage of a second time. He Yu does a fine job at being Xiao Huayong. He shows the fragility and vulnerability of the character, but he is also cunning in his own right, proving once and for all that this seemingly delicate individual knows how to play political games too.
Most interestingly, their dynamic is not built upon forced romances but rather on a mutual respect for each other’s intelligence. Fan Shuaiqi creates an excellent first impression as Bu Shulin, while Lai Weiming as Prince Chang Ying is yet another element of surprise in an already complex fight for power in the palace.
The political plotline has also been surprisingly straightforward to understand. Rather than bombarding viewers with names and a lot of alliances that are difficult to follow, the show steadily introduces all the factions and also gives their plans a purpose.
The mystery of the Rouge Ledger, the poisoning of Huayong and the identity of the real mastermind kept me on edge all along. It is also worth mentioning that the series does not portray all the princes as villains. There are some people who appear dubious enough to make me question everything, and I have my own theories on who the actual puppet master is.
Blossoms of Power Episode 1-4 Review: Summing Up
Now that I have seen the C-drama Blossoms of Power, I am very excited about where the story will take us. The revenge storyline is just getting started, the love storyline is unfolding in a realistic way, and there are so many secrets hidden within the imperial palace yet to be discovered. If the show continues in this way, with such excellent storytelling and political drama, then I can hardly wait to see what happens next between Qingzhi and Huayong.
