Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Review: Directed by David Gordon Green, Damon Thomas, Daniel Sackheim and Alethea Jones, the new Apple TV+ dark comedy thriller stars Tatiana Maslany as Paula alongside Jake Johnson, Jessy Hodges, Jon Michael Hill, Charlie Hall and others. Created by David J. Rosen, the series consists of 10 episodes with a runtime of around 35 minutes each.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Review
Apple TV+ series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed revolves around Paula, a divorced woman with a child, who tries to hold on to the remains of her life. She has a custody fight with her ex-husband, Karl; she has money problems, tries to give stability to her daughter, Hazel, and holds herself together in terms of emotional turmoil. Amongst this turmoil, Paula finds comfort in chatting with Trevor, an online cam boy that she gets to know through the internet.
At first, everything seems fine, but then Paula witnesses Trevor getting beaten up by a stranger during one of her chats with him. Her troubles don’t end here because soon enough, she finds out that Trevor is dead and that she is now caught up in a murder mystery.
The part that I enjoyed the most about Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed was the realism of Paula despite all the crazy things happening to her. The show always puts her in a very awkward and risky position, but what Paula chooses to do in those situations seems realistic because her actions are based on fear rather than stupidity. Paula is alone, tired and afraid of losing her child, and the show manages to convey this idea well enough that people will understand why she keeps making wrong decisions. Although her behaviour sometimes looks unrealistic, for example, when she decides to check out Trevor’s place by herself, it makes more sense than the usual lazy writing.
Tatiana Maslany single-handedly holds the entire show up. She plays Paula as someone who is annoying, fragile, and likeable simultaneously. On one hand, she struggles to navigate herself through another embarrassing encounter with her former husband; on the other, she hides in a closet while the murderer roams the house. Maslany portrays the humour and the emotional breakdowns with ease, and that is what makes the show such a compelling watch. If it were not for her acting, some of the plot twists might not seem as believable.
Another merit of the series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is that it manages to balance everyday issues in the suburbs and the thriller aspects of it quite well. While one scene revolves around Paula being concerned about custody and the activities at school, the next one plunges her into a whole array of issues, such as blackmail, murders, and even online scams. This makes the series interesting since it does not become an ordinary crime thriller. Essentially, it still revolves around the themes of loneliness and emotional neglect, with the desire to have someone to talk to.
In addition, I enjoyed the gradual unfolding of various aspects in relation to Trevor. At first, he is portrayed as yet another conman who uses unsuspecting victims online, but then comes the second episode, where additional details about his personality are unveiled. Trevor’s affair, secret business ventures, and his enigmatic partner are all enough to maintain the suspense without revealing all the cards from the beginning. Despite the fact that the revelation about Trevor’s murderer takes place rather quickly, it fails to ruin the intrigue, as the suspense moves to whether Paula survives the scandal.
However, the series does have some weaknesses as well. Sometimes, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed overstrives to keep everything chaotic. Moreover, some of the events depend too much on coincidence. At some point, the fact that Paula keeps getting into trouble becomes a bit annoying. The plot often confuses tension with development, thus creating unnecessary prolongations of certain scenes. Some confrontations could be made quicker and more intense instead of being dragged out.
A related problem is the fact that although the Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed series presents engaging topics such as the exploitation of youth through technology and internet romance and the problems of suburban life, it does not always analyse them sufficiently. Although the show mentions a few topics, it tends to rush from one to another without giving them sufficient time. In other words, the show is most effective when it slows down and concentrates on Paula’s feelings rather than another plot twist.
That being said, the first two episodes of the Apple TV+ series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed have a great pace. The mystery is engaging enough to make the audience interested, and the dark humour works better than I would have expected. The show doesn’t use punch lines for its jokes; rather, it uses awkward moments and Paula’s increasing sense of panic. Seeing her desperately trying to hold on to any sort of normalcy when everything else falls apart is strangely amusing. One specific example is the scene involving Trevor’s cat and the discovery of the murder.

All in all, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed can be somewhat chaotic at times, but that’s very much by design. Its appeal lies in the feeling of discomfort, fear, and general instability, and for the most part, it manages to turn that into a rather entertaining dark comedy thriller. The show may not always be able to handle all of its themes equally well, nor does everything about the story necessarily make sense, but solid acting and a good mystery certainly make it an interesting watch.
