My Royal Nemesis Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Han Tae-seop and written by Kang Hyun-joo, the Netflix kdrama 멋진 ì‹ ì„¸ê³„ stars Lim Ji-yeon as Kang Dan-sim aka Sin Seo-ri, Heo Nam-jun as Cha Se-gye, Jang Seung-jo as Choi Mun-do, alongside Kim Min-seok, Lee Se-hee, Kim Hae-sook and others.
My Royal Nemesis Episode 1 Recap
K-drama My Royal Nemesis Episode 1 is set hundreds of years ago during the Joseon period, when bizarre calamities begin occurring all over the kingdom following the sighting of a star that had a red tail. The central figure in the rumours that emerge is Kang Dan-sim, a lady of humble birth who unexpectedly attains a high status at the royal court. The royal court quickly takes sides against her, holding her responsible for the increasing disorder and claiming that she is guilty of offences that she has not committed. In spite of trying to prove her innocence, she ends up being ordered to take poison while a faithful shaman conducts a ceremony using her blood.
But death does not mark the end of Kang’s existence because she suddenly finds herself in contemporary Korea as Shin Seo-ri, a failing actress, while shooting a historical film. She finds herself confused by her surroundings and shocks everybody on set with her rude demeanour and old-fashioned Joseon period vocabulary. While everyone thinks that she is just going crazy, Kang slowly figures out that she has made a transition from one time to another and from one life to another.
On the other hand, Cha Se-gye, an arrogant and heartless chaebol son, is also introduced in My Royal Nemesis k-drama ep 1 as someone who has been facing some criticism lately due to a viral abuse scandal where he seems to have physically abused some workers. It seems that the real story may be quite different, but regardless, it seems that Se-gye may also be hurt emotionally by this situation.
With Kang struggling to cope with modern-day Seoul, the show is full of comic relief. Overwhelmed with seeing skyscrapers, cars, and digital advertisements, Kang ends up tumbling in front of Se-gye’s car. Thinking that she is attempting to swindle money from him, Se-gye mocks her; however, she gets back at him by slapping him several times in the street. In a single scene, their relationship is set for a future filled with romantic tension.
In episode 1 of My Royal Nemesis, Kang later visits a museum that displays items used during the Joseon period, and she feels heartbroken to learn that her name is recorded in history books as that of a villainess. The painting that she has painted is attributed to another artist, and tour guides refer to her as a destructive, evil woman. She meets a fortuneteller who thinks that her claims regarding her journey through time are true. In addition, the firm where Se-gye works is preparing to launch a new cultural brand in which Kang finds herself involved in auditions.
My Royal Nemesis Episode 2 Recap
In My Royal Nemesis Episode 2, Kang’s traumatic experience of her execution is revisited when she has a dream in which the King abruptly becomes evil and forcibly feeds her poison. The horrific flashback has a lasting impact on her life even after she awakens in the contemporary world, where she believes she is under threat from others. She confidently informs Se-gye that she has the skill to notice an assassination attempt and offers herself as his bodyguard.
Even as he tries to distance himself from her, Se-gye discreetly instructs his secretary to see to it that Kang is safely escorted home. On the way back, the show successfully uses comedy again as Kang overreacts to any speed of driving. On the other hand, Se-gye participates in an equally intense family meal arranged by his grandfather. While outwardly courteous, their interactions involve a lot of verbal barbs aimed at each other. It is also discovered that the attempt on the life of the man could be a deliberate use of the labour strike.
As Se-gye researches the history of Seo-ri, he discovers that there is nothing sinister in her history. On the other hand, Kang learns about the true Shin Seo-ri from the diary. Kang finds out that the true Seo-ri had been living a sad and miserable life as a former actress who could not make ends meet while supporting her grandmother. Kang realises that Seo-ri has led such a tragic life; therefore, she decides to lead her life boldly.
This episode takes a turn in its emotional direction when Kang finds herself going viral due to a leak from one of her drama projects. Her powerful screen presence manages to attract the attention of various corporations, among them, the brand marketing project for Se-gye. While the corporation is about to reach out to her, Kang suffers from PTSD while on set shooting commercials because of the appearance of a beverage that resembles the poison she had been forced to ingest in Joseon.
But then comes the unexpected twist. Kang is abruptly confronted by Mun-do, causing her to become frozen in terror when she realises that he bears the identical face of the King who sentenced her to death centuries ago. Fearing a recurrence of events, she instantly seeks refuge under the protection of Se-gye. Episode 2 of My Royal Nemesis concluded with a revelation about how a masked man similar to Se-gye had saved Kang during the Joseon era.
My Royal Nemesis Episode 1-2 Review
The premiere episodes of My Royal Nemesis the Korean drama, truly caught me off guard since I thought it was going to be just another mundane romantic fantasy drama, but the first episode is actually more engaging than I initially imagined. The Korean drama and its love affair with time travel will never end, but I don’t even care anymore, since this is pretty hilarious. The story is completely aware that it is utterly ridiculous and makes fun of it.
However, the thing that I liked the most about the show was the balance that it achieved when it came to humour versus Kang Dan-sim’s psychological trauma. On one hand, there are times when she’s seen violently clashing with Se-gye or being electrocuted by cars travelling at normal speed. And then suddenly, we’re reminded that this is a lady who had been betrayed, shamed, and executed in public. The particular episode that really highlighted this aspect of her life was episode 2, where she experienced the PTSD reaction from the poisonous drink.
The interaction between Lim Ji-yeon and Heo Nam-jun is yet another reason that the episodes are well done. Their dynamic already seems complicated, competitive, and even amusing without being forced into romance right away. It is also satisfying to see that Se-gye continues to be obnoxious, but that Kang cannot stand her attitude at all. Rather than creating immediate romance between the characters, the series allows them to conflict with one another over and over again.
On the other hand, there is no denying that there may be too many themes to fit in at once in this story. Between reincarnation secrets, palace intrigues, business affairs, murder plots, and even comedy, it sometimes seems like emotional scenes pass by too swiftly without settling in first. The secret revealed by Choi Mun-do towards the end of Episode 2 of My Royal Nemesis, however, was actually quite intriguing and made for an exciting subplot.
Netflix My Royal Nemesis Review: Summing Up
In all, while My Royal Nemesis Episodes 1 and 2 may still lack a sense of novelty, one thing is for sure: it certainly knows how to keep itself engaging. The jokes are funny enough, the leading characters have good chemistry, and the mysteriousness of their past lives makes it intriguing enough for me to watch further. Now that the plot has suggested that the execution of Kang might be linked to those around her in the present day, I am quite intrigued to know what happens next.
