Netflix film Remarkably Bright Creatures focuses on Tova Sullivan, a widowed senior citizen employed as a cleaner in the local aquarium following the tragic death of her son some years ago. She gradually finds her mundane existence turning upside down due to her peculiar relationship with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus whose intelligence is way beyond any expectations from a marine animal. Meanwhile, a disillusioned young man named Cameron moves into the town in search of some closure linked to his own past. The convergence of these two lonely souls sets the stage for a suspenseful movie culminating in a mystery that unfolds in a rather predictable fashion.
The aspect that I loved about Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures the most was its soft and cosy nature. This movie is about healing and human connection. At times, this type of movie tends to go too far into cheese territory quite fast; however, the movie is able to avoid this through the performances of the cast. While some of the scenes may be predictable, they are effective due to how genuine they seem.
Sally Field is entirely responsible for the emotions in the film. She plays the role of Tova convincingly, modestly, and realistically. The persistent sadness in her eyes tells you what the character means even when she does not utter many words. The movie shows a lot of instances when the woman lives alone and cleans her aquarium, sits lonely in her home, or avoids discussions about her son. These moments are sometimes more emotionally moving than the other ones because they seem realistic. Sally Field never exaggerates the sorrow, and this makes her role even more convincing.
The bond that exists between Tova and Cameron is equally strong and well-written in the film. Luckily, there is no forced romance between these characters in the film. Rather, their bond takes place as if they were two lost individuals trying to find solace in each other’s company. Lewis Pullman manages to portray Cameron as a rather confident individual on the surface, but quite confused in his mind. It might appear that the story arc of Cameron isn’t as well-developed as that of Tova; yet, it still works thanks to Pullman’s performance.
One of the things I liked about Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures film is that it did not make the character of Marcellus out to be some sort of unrealistically magical mythical being. While he is quite intelligent and remarkably observant for an octopus, the film manages to keep him grounded enough that he does not become silly. The performance of Alfred Molina gives him a calming presence, almost as if he were the narrator witnessing all the flawed people struggling in their lives. He even has some amusing inner monologues.
The visual aspect of the aquarium provides a highly serene environment for the film. With the blue colour scheme, minimal lighting, and underwater scenery, there is a soothing effect created that complements the gentle nature of the film. Surprisingly, the computer-generated image of Marcellus is also highly believable most of the time, something that I was not expecting, given that many streaming movies fail to do so.
Despite all that, one may say that the biggest problem with the Remarkably Bright Creatures movie is its predictability. As soon as one starts watching, it becomes crystal clear where the plot will take us and how those emotional revelations will be done. The director constantly introduces those secrets which will probably be found out by the viewers far earlier than they are discovered by the characters themselves.
There is also a problem with pacing at times in the movie. The middle of Sally Field’s Remarkably Bright Creatures lags a little bit since the same emotions keep being repeated throughout the film — feelings of loneliness while talking to each other, awkward moments in the process of building trust, and constant thoughts about losses that happened in the past. Even though the soothing atmosphere of the movie helps throughout the narrative, sometimes it would be better if the writers were more daring with their characters.
However, despite its shortcomings, I must admit that it was difficult not to be moved by the film multiple times. There is something deeply moving about seeing lonely individuals gradually find themselves becoming connected once again through acts of kindness. The film has a distinctly warming quality about it rather than one that is thrilling, but at times, that is all that is required.

Overall, Remarkably Bright Creatures can be regarded as a heartwarming story boosted by an excellent acting role played by Sally Field and its sincere emotional nature. Though there are some cliché aspects in terms of the predictable narrative, there should be no doubt that the picture has managed to touch upon the important topics of grieving and overcoming loneliness.
