The Silent Noise Review: Directed by Onat Diaz, this Filipino mystery thriller series on Prime Video stars Angelica Panganiban as Jackie, Zanjoe Marudo as Anton, Zaijian Jaranilla as Matteo, Mutya Orquia as Pia, KD Omalin as Eli, Joem Bascon as Manu Cortez, Mylene Dizon as Samantha Ignacio and others. The Silent Noise Review
The Filipino mystery thriller The Silent Noise centres on the mysterious death of a teacher named Samantha, which at first seems to be a suicide but is later discovered to be otherwise. As investigator Manu Cortez gets deeper into the case, it gradually involves the Carpio family, especially Eli, who is left confused by all the chaos that is happening around him. What ensues is a complex mess of secrets, strained relationships, and uncomfortable truths that threaten to tear the family apart.
There’s this underlying feeling of unease that permeates every episode, and the Prime Video series The Silent Noise does well in making the viewer feel like something is always slightly off, even in the most mundane moments. It doesn’t immediately show its hand, but instead tries to slowly build up the tension and let the mystery percolate. It’s effective in getting the viewer invested in the show, though it does ask for a little patience.
So far, I am also loving the writing, as it is really keeping me on the edge. From the beginning, it is already clear that Samantha’s death is not just what it seems, and the show is cleverly making you suspect in different directions. The Carpio family, in particular, is written in such a way that makes you question their involvement in Samantha’s death. There is already a complicated history, and as more and more is revealed, it is already becoming hard to distinguish between what is true and false.
The emotional centre of Prime Video’s The Silent Noise is the way they have shown the family, and that’s where The Silent Noise truly excels. Angelica Panganiban is excellent in her role as Jackie, a mother who is trying to keep everything together while simultaneously losing her own self in the process. She is constantly placed in a situation where she is forced to choose between her family and the harsh realities of life, and that’s where she excels. There’s something so reserved in her performance that makes her feel so real, especially when she is forced to confront the people she cares about most.
Zanjoe Marudo, playing Anton, is another element in that tension. Anton is a character who seems guarded and hard to get along with. But that’s exactly what makes it work in the story. There’s always that sense that he knows more than what’s being revealed. That tension is part of what makes it mysterious. The tension between Jackie and Anton is also interesting because on the surface, they seem like a normal couple, but as the story unfolds, there’s a sense that there could be underlying issues with them, like distrust or infidelity.

The younger actors also have their part in creating the story. Zaijian Jaranilla’s character, Matteo, is also significant, especially when his personal life begins to go awry. The story that involves him with Jem and her pregnancy is also interesting, but at times, it is also uneven. The situation develops quickly, but even if it adds shock value, there is not enough exploration of the emotional impact of what is happening before moving on with the story.
This is where some of the problems with the show begin to be seen. Some of the subplots are introduced with great potential but are not developed sufficiently at the start. Take, for example, the connection between the mayor, Ted, and the Able Hearts Foundation. This is something that is constantly hinted at, especially through Jackie’s suspicions. However, instead of being developed, it is more like something that is simply mentioned.
The investigative approach through Manu Cortez also seems to be a bit disorganised. While he is the character who appears to be leading the investigation, there are a number of scenes where his character seems to be reacting to things rather than actively seeking them out. Even something as significant as his sudden promotion to Police Chief is something that the show does not immediately explore, which can make his character seem a bit passive for an individual who is driving the investigation.
Since the show is being released episodically, it does try to go for a slow burn, but sometimes it does not quite get the balance right. There are moments where the tension does build well, but there are also moments where the show does feel like it’s holding back a bit too much. There are scenes that feel like they’re stretching on a bit too long without really offering any new information, but the show does manage to grab your attention again through the twists, especially if they involve the Carpio family.
Prime Video The Silent Noise Review: Summing Up
Till now, The Silent Noise is a series that thrives on its characters and the intrigue surrounding them. It is not always successful in executing all the subplots, and the pacing can be a bit uneven, but it still manages to keep you hooked. The performances, particularly of Angelica Panganiban and Zanjoe Marudo, make the story worth watching.
