Age of Attraction Review: Netflix’s latest reality dating experiment poses the question: is it possible for love to flourish without age, arguably one of the most scrutinised factors in relationships? Hosted by Nick Viall and Natalie Joy, the reality dating series features a cast of singles at a picturesque retreat, and they are tasked with connecting without knowing each other’s ages. The reality dating series has nine episodes, but only five are available so far. The idea is simple yet intriguing: the cast connects and bonds with each other, and only after they are ready do they enter a special “Promise Room” and learn each other’s true ages.

The Netflix reality dating show Age of Attraction is quite intriguing. Most dating programs rely on instantaneous decisions like physical appearance, lifestyle, or even age to determine who clicks with whom. But taking age out of the equation is a brave social experiment to say the least: is it even possible to click with someone when one of the biggest indicators of dating potential is kept a secret?
However, what promises to be an interesting premise is marred by its execution. Netflix’s Age of Attraction begins with an introduction of all its contestants and drops them in an environment that is so tranquil and almost resort-like. The setting is very picturesque with lakes, woods, and open spaces everywhere, giving it an almost cinematic feel. But inside, it is all confusion as all contestants try to figure out potential matches.
Because age is not an indicator, contestants on the Age of Attraction reality series find themselves spending more time than they would have liked trying to figure out what age they think each other is. It is based on hobbies, work, pop culture references, and other aspects of their lives. While some guesses turn out to be right, others turn out to be totally wrong, and that is when things get quite hilarious.
However, after getting past the initial excitement of guessing the contestants’ ages, things start to feel a bit stable and even repetitive. Each episode follows a similar pattern of contestants spending time together, going on group outings or individual dates, and discussing how their connections are growing. At a certain point, they all decide whether or not they wish to pursue a relationship with each other. When they are ready, they go into the Promise Room and disclose their ages, which is supposed to be the big twist in the show.
However, the problem is that the show relies a bit too heavily on this twist. When it first occurs, it is exciting and thrilling since everyone is curious about the contestants’ ages. But when it happens a few times in a row, it gets a bit boring. The pauses, shocked expressions, and nervous laughter all start to seem a bit predictable instead of surprising.

Another issue is that many of these relationships develop so quickly that there is not enough time to understand why this connection is important. A couple might find that they are immediately clicking on something special, but there is not enough shown of their interactions to allow the viewer to become invested in their relationship.
As for the hosts, Nick Viall and Natalie Joy, they seem to be a bit underutilised in this show. Considering that they are in a relationship with an age difference, they would seem to be a perfect fit to host this show. However, they are not utilised as much as they could have been. Perhaps they could have had a bit more interaction with the contestants or talked about age gaps in relationships to increase their involvement in this show.
As for the contestants, they are all pretty typical of what is expected in a reality dating show. Some are completely open to forming a connection regardless of age, while others are a bit more cautious. In a few of the cases, contestants start to question a relationship as soon as they realise that their age difference is significant.
Ironically, the hesitation ultimately serves to further reinforce the message of the show. While the idea of removing age from the equation in terms of the initial attraction is at the heart of the experiment, it is soon made obvious that age does indeed play a significant role in terms of perception in relationships. The conversations about long-term plans, expectations from families, and lifestyle differences are all brought up, and in some cases, these conversations serve to further illustrate some of the challenges associated with age gaps in relationships.
These moments are arguably some of the most compelling moments of the show, as they are not staged but rather occur naturally. When there is a level of contemplative discussion, there is a level of meaning to the experiment. However, such moments are not always without moments of repetition. The activities that are part of the show can sometimes feel like a vacation montage rather than a level of relationship-building.
The Age of Attraction series quickly descends into familiar patterns of dating reality shows: botched conversations, spontaneous hookups, and big, showy reveals. With many episodes to go, things could get even more interesting in future instalments, especially as the couples start to tackle real-life situations and opinions from friends and family begin to matter.

In the end, Age of Attraction is not a terrible reality show, but it isn’t particularly memorable either. The premise had a lot of promise in offering a fresh spin on contemporary dating, but the repetition and lack of fully formed relationships prevent it from standing out in a crowded field.
