Esther had spent the better part of her adulthood wandering around Spain, working temporary jobs, and searching for a place to call home. Despite Esther’s wandering nature, the woman remained extremely attached to her family, particularly her mother and sister.
The story begins with the family receiving strange messages from Esther’s phone. The messages suggested that Esther had planned to leave her family behind and move to another country. However, the family suspected that the messages may have been sent by another person, as the messages did not have the tone that Esther would have used. Therefore, the family suspected that another individual had sent the messages.
As the family became more worried about Esther’s whereabouts, the authorities seemed less concerned. Since Esther was an adult, the authorities did not consider her disappearance an emergency. As the family became more frustrated, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They followed the last known whereabouts of Esther, speaking to people who had encountered her along the way.
One name continued to surface during the search: José Jurado Montilla, a wandering TikTok star who documented his travels through Spain. Online, he had developed an aura of quiet contemplation through travel videos and an increasing number of fans.

He appears to be an affable, laid-back wanderer who’s enjoying the beautiful locations he’s visiting. However, if one examines the videos in the context of the investigation, the comments he makes about women and his experiences suggest that something sinister may be lurking beneath the surface.
The documentary takes the viewer through Esther’s journey with meticulous attention, eventually bringing her into contact with Montilla. This brings the viewer into the world that eventually leads to GandÃa, a seaside town where the investigation will turn up evidence of a horrific crime.
The TikTok Killer docuseries explains, in an understandable manner, the way the online trail led the investigation towards the true story. While the crime is the focus, the film also explores an interesting aspect of the internet: the way the internet can shape an image. For Montilla, the online clips of the perpetrator jumping from one city to another hid the much heavier truth behind the actions.
Netflix docuseries The TikTok Killer does an excellent job of not sensationalizing the crime’s internet aspect. Instead, the film shows the way an individual can easily fall for the internet’s persona. There is one scene where Esther is shown in the videos that the perpetrator posts, showing concern for her whereabouts. It is an interesting look at the dark underbelly of the internet that helps the film feel very contemporary.
The story is a tight two-part affair, with the filmmakers wasting no time and getting right to the chase with the investigation, and then the big revelations. Would it have made a good feature-length film? Maybe, but as a short, it works well, neither rushed nor overly long.

The TikTok Killer is a dark, gripping documentary that keeps the focus on the victim and her family, not the killer, and also explores the idea of how the killer could present himself online and what this says about the kind of person he is. From the first frames, you are drawn in, and this is due to the emotional pull of the victim and her family, and the killer and his online presence, and this makes it a film that is unsettling and also very thought-provoking.
