EXchange Season 4 Episode 9 started off light with the special guest appearance of rapper pH1 to give some comic relief before the uneasiness resumed. Soon, the residents received a letter with the “keyword date,” in which male participants had to choose their partners in view of keywords set in the talking room by the female residents. Obviously, this structure brought in a tinge of curiosity, jealousy, and vulnerability among them. Choices were phrases like “I like drinking,” “Someone I could learn from,” “Insincere love,” “I like red wine,” and “My drinking habit is falling asleep.”
Kim Woo-jin chose Min-kyung’s keyword, Yoo-sik chose Park Hyeon-ji’s, Jae-hyeong chose Ji-hyeon’s, Won-kyu chose Yun-nyeong’s, and Baek-hyun chose Ji-yeon’s. The pairing of the members had their own unspoken dynamics, mostly for the women who did not know with whom they would be going on a date until the meetings started.
And then, of course, there was the date between Yoo-sik and Ji-hyeon, one of the sweetest moments of the day. Full of laughter and playful energy, they seemed comfortable around each other, and that chemistry seemed very organic. The anonymous text exchanges, however, were on a completely different level emotionally, in that they revealed how the littlest things in life can have a great deal of meaning. Meanwhile, the emotional high point in Episode 9 of Transit Love Season 4 came when Min-kyung confronted Yoo-sik on the terrace, asking him why he kept avoiding her. What began with a plea for understanding quickly escalated into a painful argument. Yoo-sik was visibly frustrated and asked her whether he was expected to look after her all the time, while Min-kyung’s heartbreak was palpable when their communication completely collapsed.
Elsewhere, the late-night conversation between Hyeon-ji and Baek-hyun had stretched into dawn, illustrating very clearly that unresolved affection can go hand in hand with resentment. There were moments of tension, but the residual affection between them was palpable, perhaps signalling that a reconciliation wasn’t entirely out of the question. Again, Ji-yeon and Woo-jin’s exchange had confirmed her firm decision not to rekindle their relationship, even as Woo-jin struggled to hide his longing.
Episode 9 of Transit Love Season 4 captured perfectly the dynamic of being in the situation where the keyword date occurred. The date of Won-kyu and Yun-nyeong brought easy laughter as they continued to find their compatibility during a personal colour test in such a playful manner, cautious energy showing comfort levels were shifting little by little.
At the same time, the water-park date of Min-kyung and Woo-jin showed glimpses of a renewal of vigour, two people laughing amidst heavy loads from their respective pasts. It is Woo-jin who brings up his desire to be with a woman who cherishes long-term relationships, who has loved deeply and sincerely-while playing in the water and laughing together. And his words struck deep into Min-kyung, whose decade-long relationship history speaks to the same truth. As their date comes to an end, both assure that they want to go on another, and viewers wondered-just this latest development might salve the wounds of yesteryear.
Ji-hyeon went on a date with Jae-hyeong to a leather workshop quiet, personal space to get to know each other better. Jae-hyeong was quite blunt about his interest in her, asking if there was still space in her heart for another besides her ex. His frankness and warmth seemed to have struck a chord that perhaps Ji-hyeon finally saw somebody in a different light-though her heart was still in one place. Those soft laughs, reflective moments of silence, and honest exchange made it one of the memorable dates in this episode.
