Netflix movie Toaster centres around Ramakant, a small shopkeeper dealing in perfumes, who is a confirmed miser, i.e., he hoards every single penny. In his attempt to save money, he even values a few rupees, and this creates problems for him with his wife, Shilpa, who is a sensible person. But what started out as a normal affair of fetching a very costly toaster, which is presented to one of the couples on the occasion of a cancelled marriage ceremony, suddenly turns into a series of absurd events involving extortion, an accident, and some very peculiar characters.
Netflix’s Toaster establishes itself as an absurd comedy-thriller right from the start, and it is able to hold your attention for a little while due to its intriguing premise. It is very amusing how the premise of this film involves a mundane item, such as a toaster, leading to a string of criminal actions and chaos. The film actually has some humorous aspects, especially during the first half, when the stinginess of Ramakant is highlighted through humour.
But then comes the issue when the movie attempts to balance several tones simultaneously. There is an abrupt shift from a funny tone to one that is disturbing in its nature. Rather than creating suspense or surprise, the script relies on randomness, which, after some time, becomes quite tiring for the audience.
The other problem with Rajkummar Rao’s Toaster movie is the screenplay. Even though the concept seems innovative, it is not carried out in a precise manner. The dialogue in some instances works, but when you consider the genre of the movie, there is inconsistency in the humour used. The scenes tend to drag, giving the impression that the story is overambitious.
Moreover, the movie encounters problems when it comes to character development. The film introduces some intriguing characters, but those end up being underdeveloped or forced to take drastic turns for no apparent reason. This is especially apparent during the moments when the plot of the story becomes more confusing and complicated.

When it comes to acting, Rajkummar Rao has once again proved that he is one of the most reliable actors in the Hindi film industry. There is a genuineness about the portrayal of Ramakant, who ends up being infuriatingly likeable. The comic sense of timing is spot-on in many instances, particularly in those where he goes beyond the pale on account of his miserliness. In a film whose plot often threatens to fall apart, he manages to keep it all together.
Sanya Malhotra also gives an assured performance as Shilpa, who can be considered the only sensible person in this tale. Her character exhibits both comedic and irritating aspects; however, there could have been more scope exploited in writing regarding this character. While the on-screen chemistry of the leading couple is plausible enough, it remains somewhat wasted in places where the movie moves to more eccentric plots.
Another actor who makes a significant contribution through her acting is Archana Puran Singh, who presents a role that is simultaneously fascinating and disturbing. The character contributes significantly to the dark element in the movie; however, the script seems contradictory, and at certain points, it is difficult to follow. Abhishek Banerjee and Jitendra Joshi also do justice to their roles, adding to the chaos that exists in the movie.
As far as visuals and technical aspects are concerned, Toaster is pretty much mediocre. There is nothing really eye-catching about the way it is filmed and designed, especially considering that the concept behind the movie is quite quirky. The filmmakers should have gone for a more artistic approach in order to emphasise the ridiculous nature of their work.

In the end, Toaster can be described as an array of brilliant ideas that somehow fail to cohere into one cohesive piece of work. It seeks to be eccentric, controversial, and hilarious simultaneously, and yet falls flat on all three counts. Though the cast, particularly Rajkummar Rao’s performance, deserves credit, it is not enough to redeem a confused movie.
