Tagusari Bros Review: Directed by Yamamoto Takeyoshi and written by Watanabe Kei, Netflix’s Japanese crime drama 田鎖ブラザーズ stars Okada Masaki as Makoto Tagusari and Sometani Shota as Minoru Tagusari alongside Nakajo Ayami, Igawa Haruka, Miyachika Kaito and others.
This series combines a police procedural narrative with emotional family drama as it tells the story of two brothers who have been affected for life by having witnessed their parents’ murders as children. Now, as adults, both of the brothers work in investigations and, without realising it, find themselves pursuing the truth through their chosen profession. Within the show’s first five episodes, viewers will slowly uncover the details surrounding the tragic experience of the two brothers while at the same time being exposed to shocking individual cases.
Tagusari Bros Episode 1-5 Recap
Episode 1 of Tagusari Bros opens in 1995 when young Makoto and Minoru have been leading a normal life with their parents, Sakutaro and Yuka. The peace and happiness of the family come to an end all of a sudden when Makoto catches sight of someone suspicious running away from their home. After a few moments, he realises that his parents have been killed in a brutal manner while Minoru has been left injured.
This traumatic experience becomes the turning point in the lives of both brothers. At present, Makoto is working as a policeman while Minoru has become a forensic expert. While both of them want justice, they lead their lives in completely different ways. While Minoru is calm and observant, Makoto lacks discipline and tends to hide his emotions behind sarcasm and gossiping.
The first important case they get involves a man who seems to have died from an accident. This turns out to be more difficult for the detectives when the victim’s mother refuses to accept that it is her son. They finally learn that the deceased man was actually a former bus driver named Jun Okochi who was using an assumed name. As Makoto and Minoru continue to investigate the case, they come across a terrible tale of revenge related to a father called Nogami.
His son Taiki had committed suicide some years ago because he was being mistreated by the cruel swimming lessons given by Okochi. The hit-and-run accident case turns out to be more about loss, guilt and vengeance. Makoto, who knows what it feels like to lose his family, starts sympathising with Nogami.
In episode 2 of Tagusari Bros, there is much focus on Taiki’s death and how his life was destroyed by toxic authority figures. The brothers find out that Taiki had been heavily injured and made to stop swimming, even though he tried hard to get better. As Makoto investigates further, he finds out about Ms Chinen, who used to be a school advisor, and the ways in which she too played a role in destroying Taiki’s life.
Instead of taking revenge on her, however, he breaks down emotionally when he makes her recognise her part in the pain she caused. At the same time, the two brothers look back at the clues they have related to their parents’ death and realise that Yuji Tsuda, the investigative writer, knew much more before he fell into a coma.
As the episodes advance, the mystery revolving around the deaths of Sakutaro and Yuka becomes even more enigmatic. In episode 3 of Tagusari Bros, the death of a girl known as Aiko is introduced as having happened through a tragic accident caused by a fire incident. Makoto and Minoru discover gold bars that had been concealed under the floor of her apartment, and it is clear that Aiko was trying to protect something of value from people who were after her because of an earlier robbery incident.
During the investigation, Makoto becomes more obsessed with confronting Tsuda, as he feels that he might be responsible for the deaths of their parents. Minoru tries to keep information relating to the recovery of Tsuda away from his brother due to concerns over his mental condition.
In Tagusari Bros episode 4, further details on the robbery are provided, along with some other revelations regarding the Tagusari family. It turns out that the robbery was planned and conducted by Saki, who is a childhood friend of Aiko. Saki masterminded everything that led to multiple deaths due to her desire to get rich and free herself from a poor life.
Being driven by poverty and despair, Saki came to the conclusion that money was the only way she could change her life. However, Saki’s actions led to the destruction of everything and everyone around her. At the same time, Makoto and Minoru realise that Tsuda probably had nothing to do with their parents’ deaths. However, the greatest revelation for the brothers occurs when they find a homemade gun at their childhood house.
Tagusari Bros episode 5 has a different approach, but still moves on with the overall mystery. The storyline revolves around Narita, who is a student, and who surprisingly confesses to killing a university chairman, although the death was attributed to a heart attack. It will be revealed how university admission pressures and monetary problems caused Narita and his mother to become desperate. Issues of sacrifices by the parents, inequality in education, and emotional breakdowns are some of the issues raised in this case. In addition to this case, the brothers also carry on their investigation into Tsuda’s things, which leads them to discover something related to Kashima Metal Industries.
Tagusari Bros Review
What makes Japanese crime drama Tagusari Bros great is certainly the emotions involved. The show might be described as a crime thriller, but what matters in it is how the unresolved trauma affects people. Makoto and Minoru are far from perfect detectives; they are emotionally hurt people trying to cope with their lives, still affected by the childhood trauma that has not left them any chance for closure. It was really interesting to see the way the brothers coped with the grief. The emotional outbursts of Makoto and Minoru’s silences made me feel the depth of their pain.
Another thing I genuinely enjoyed in this Netflix’s Tagusari Bros Episode 1-5 is the way in which every single incident stands in harmony with the main theme of the movie. This is the case in which the incidents of Nogami’s desire for revenge on behalf of his son, the incidents in which Saki is obsessed with poverty and the incidents where Narita goes through the pressures of society to do something drastic. None of these incidents is out of place since they depict the suffering of the Tagusari brothers, too.
As far as acting is concerned, Okada Masaki performs convincingly as Makoto. He portrays a man whose emotional stability and vulnerability are realistic enough to be believed. Sometani Shota, in turn, plays Minoru as a more reserved yet just as convincing character. Some of the most memorable scenes in the series are those quiet conversations between the brothers when they almost don’t talk at all, but somehow manage to communicate their mutual suffering. The supporting characters do a great job, too, particularly in intense investigations of victims and suspects.
Sometimes, the pacing of the show may be uneven since it combines both episodic cases and the mystery surrounding the brothers’ parents. But the show compensates for this through its emotionally rich storytelling and mystery elements. Each episode is designed to give out just enough information to keep the viewers engaged without providing too many details. The most important example is the discovery of the gun in the Netflix Japanese drama Tagusari Bros Episode 4, which completely shifts the direction of the storyline in an effective manner.
Tagusari Bros Episode 1-5 Review: Summing Up
On the whole, watching this has been an unexpectedly compelling experience. Combining emotional storytelling, complex investigation, and excellent acting performances, the series offers an intriguing crime story which becomes increasingly intriguing as the episodes continue. With five more episodes left to watch, the mystery connected with the deaths of Sakutaro and Yuka appears unsolved as more secrets begin to unfold. If the series is able to maintain its emotional power and provide a satisfactory answer to the main question, Tagusari Bros might be remembered as one of the best Netflix Japanese crime dramas this year.
