However, they choose to have their wedding in his family’s secluded cabin in the woods. The purpose of the trip was to be a romantic getaway. However, things do not go as planned as Rachel starts to feel that something is wrong. The story is full of mystery as Rachel does not know what is going on. The question is not what is going to go wrong as Rachel is getting married. The question is, is Rachel making the biggest mistake of her life?
What sets the Something Very Bad is Going to Happen series apart from other horror stories is that it incorporates horror not only for the sole purpose of using it for jump scares. It also incorporates it as a metaphor for commitment. It incorporates the fear of making the wrong choice in a partner in a very clever way. It exaggerates it to the point that it is almost supernatural. What if I don’t really know the person I’m with? This is what the show is all about. I think, to be honest, this is what made the show so interesting for me and not the horror.
Netflix’s Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is carried by the performance of Camila Morrone, which seems to be both raw and grounded. Her portrayal of Rachel is the quintessential example of the perfect balance between vulnerability and paranoia. You can tell she is getting more and more paranoid with each episode, and yet, despite all she does, she never looks out of place.
In fact, all she does is a reflection of how fear can alter one’s rational thinking, especially when you’re in a place and surrounded by people you’re not entirely comfortable with. Adam DiMarco plays Nicky in a way that is somewhat ambiguous, and this is to the show’s advantage. While he is charismatic and believable to the point where you could see him being the kind and loving partner that Rachel needs, there is always something slightly off about him.
The supporting cast is also another source of tension in this show. Nicky’s family is one big puzzle that you’re constantly trying to figure out. Gus Birney’s Portia is especially good at making you feel uncomfortable. There is something about her that is cold, and this is something that lingers long after she is off the screen. Karla Crome and Jeff Wilbusch also bring depth to their characters, ensuring that none of them come off as one-dimensional. Even though the writing is occasionally clichéd, it’s always interesting thanks to the performances.
In terms of the visuals, the snowy environment has created a rather suffocating atmosphere, which suits the show perfectly. The camerawork has also been rather invasive, with close-ups that make you have to endure the discomfort of the situation with the characters. There is also the sense of being watched, of something lurking in the background. While there have been times when the lighting has seemed rather too dark to see what is going on, it has also contributed to the suffocating atmosphere the show has aimed for.
Perhaps the area where the psychological horror series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen may split the audience is with its pace. While it is very much a slow-burner, the show doesn’t feel the need to rush towards delivering its answers. Some of the episodes are like the show is stretching them, with the focus on dialogue and emotional moments. While I can attest that I did not dislike it too much, there are times when I felt that the show was repeating the same thing without putting anything new in the mix. This is one of the cases where the reward for patience is worth it, but not all will have the patience for it.
The writing is great when it focuses on psychological tension instead of horror. The spooky coincidences and suggestions of menace are much more effective than the horror elements. There are also some visual metaphors used within the story, some of which are great, and some that are slightly heavy-handed. However, there is a sense of passion within the storytelling, especially in relation to how it’s used to create its central theme.
I think what I appreciated most is that you’re not treated like you’re some ignorant fool who needs to be guided through this experience. You’re left to squirm in the dark and wonder what the motivations are and all that. Even as the show goes down some fairly familiar horror routes, there’s never a sense that it’s not going to be predictable because it’s not just about the horror of the wedding gone wrong; it’s the horror of the uncertainty of human relationships.
