May 25, 2025, is a day we’ll keep close to our hearts for all Shawol. On their 17th debut anniversary, the group gave us presents in the form of SHINee Poet Artist MV, a song that is more of a love letter than a usual comeback. What makes it more bittersweet is that the song is the work of their late member Jonghyun, written and composed by him. It’s not a release—it’s a reunion, a tribute, and a moment frozen in time. As a fan who has been with SHINee since debut, I was already in tears just hearing Jonghyun sing again. But even apart from the emotions, “Poet | Artist” is also a stellar showcase of their artistic maturity.

When I first heard the title SHINee Poet | Artist, I immediately remembered it from Jonghyun second solo album. I already knew that this comeback would be a tribute, so I was already sobbing before pressing play. And when the music began. I was frozen. The moment I heard Jonghyun’s voice, my heart broke and swelled simultaneously. It was beautiful. Torturous. Healing. Like being hugged by a memory.
SHINee Poet Artist lyrics come across as a letter penned by Jonghyun himself. The track is a track of being referred to as a poet, an artist, as one who does not want to remain confined within the frames or the norms of the world. He does not want to be put in a box, does not want to be caged, but to be loved for what he is — for the poems he writes and the beauty he brings to the world.
It also has the feeling of being a love letter to the fans — a personal assurance that there are no walls between us, that our shared bond cuts through judgment and nothingness. There’s a part where the lyrics are, “No matter how others think of us… Don’t worry about them.” That line was so powerful to me, because it makes me recall how SHINee’s always lived with hearts, always done things their own way. The whole song was like Jonghyun reminding us that art, love, and expression are unlimited, just like him.
Vocally, SHINee reiterates why they’re one of the best vocal groups in K-pop. Onew’s gentle voice grounds the song, giving it balance and elegance. His high notes during the bridge were a gentle hug. Key adds texture with his crisp, expressive vocals—his lines always feel deeply personal, as if he’s talking directly to you. Minho, who doesn’t typically pay as much attention to rap, impresses with his soulful singing. His parts were understated but strong, demonstrating how far he’s grown as a singer. And Taemin—again—adds a dreamy, emotional texture. His voice hovers between vulnerability and strength, grounding the whole song.
But the most iconic moment is hearing Jonghyun’s voice. It catches you off guard, and yet it’s so natural. It’s like he never went away. When his voice blends with the others, time freezes. It’s not just nostalgic—it’s divine. For most of us fans, including me, this was the most emotional part of the song. It was like SHINee was saying to us, “He’s still here. We are still five.
Choreography in the MV is minimal, interpretive in nature and free-flowing, well-suited to the reflective atmosphere of the song. Members dance alone and in groups, using subtle movement and eye contact to communicate on a personal level. It was raw and real, and nothing was forced or flashy.
Overall, the most impressive thing about this comeback is the way each member gets to shine, both individually and as a group. SHINee is strongest when they’re together, and Poet | Artist is proof of that once again. They didn’t just sing this song; they performed it. But in performing it, they brought Jonghyun’s lyrics to life in the most beautiful way humanly possible.
