Perfect Crown Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Park Joon-hwa, 21세기 대군 부인 stars IU as Hui-ju and Byeon Woo-seok as Grand Prince I-an, alongside Noh Sang-hyun as Min Jeong-u, Gong Seung-yeon as Yun I-rang, Yoo Su-bin as Choi Hyeon, Lee Yeon as Do Hye Jeong, Lee Jae-won as Seong Tae-ju and others.
Perfect Crown Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Perfect Crown is narrated through voice-over, wherein the history of the family lineage is traced back to the Joseon era. The family’s glory and prominence have declined to such an extent that their presence today is merely ceremonial. The story then shifts to narrate about the youth of Hui-ju, where it is mentioned that during her schooling at Seonggyungwan University, she was noted not only for her intellect but also for her toughness.
Hui-ju, as an adult, has capitalised on her determination through her ability to run her business, Castle Beauty, with absolute authority. She loves a challenge, and she often butts heads with her half-brother, Tae-joo, who always resorts to using unfair means to beat her. Thus, attending the birth ceremony of the Crown Prince becomes the golden opportunity that comes Hui-ju’s way.
At the palace, the people become acquainted with Grand Prince I-an, who, though he is a regent having authority over himself, is also a bit rebellious. Unlike the other royalties that are bound by certain norms and follow them, Grand Prince I-an does not have to follow a particular pattern. The worlds clash in the magnificent ceremony where Hui-ju makes her audacious entry.
The problem becomes even more complex because during the burning of the palace, the trauma experienced by I-an, related to the death of the King, is triggered. At that moment, some quarrels arise within the royal family, specifically between the Queen Mother and I-an. Hui-ju bears witness to this event, which introduces another dimension to her image of the conceited prince. Then we see they both find themselves under mounting pressure; Hui-ju due to her family’s plans for her future, while I-an is pressured by his mother who wants him to marry. At the end of the kdrama Perfect Crown Episode 1, we see Hui-ju boldly ask I-an to marry her.
Perfect Crown Episode 2 Recap
Starting off right where we left off with the provocative declaration, Episode 2 of Perfect Crown. Initially, I-an rejects Hui-ju’s advances because, although she may be in love, he refuses to engage in power games. However, Hui-ju is not willing to let go of her idea, and she proceeds to do things her own special way.
She begins to slowly make herself indispensable in his life, thus gradually getting him involved in everything that she does. At first, I-an might find her presence irritating, but he eventually respects her boldness out of curiosity. Also, Hui-ju maintains success in her career as well.

During the ceremony where the royal family is in attendance, Hui-ju again displays her boldness in admitting that she loves I-an and makes him very uncomfortable as well. But soon enough, they meet and, under some conditions, find themselves caring for him when he falls ill and recovers in a hotel.
The situation drastically changes when the mother of the queen gets hold of their affair; a scandal breaks out that quickly gains the attention of the media. There has been news that they were involved and might already be pregnant, and there were huge rumbles throughout the city. At the end of Perfect Crown Episode 2, while Hui-ju laughed at all the commotion going around, I-an realises what he has to do and tells Hui-ju that she should prepare herself because she will be his wife from now on.
Perfect Crown Episode 1-2 Review
Episodes 1 and 2 of The Perfect Crown are among those that can really grab your attention because of the great cast of the movie. IU plays Hui-ju brilliantly with her intelligence, perseverance, and innocence. What is good about this movie is that she returns to her usual acting style, as she did in Hotel Del Luna. She perfectly portrays a woman who simply cannot be controlled by anything, even if there is some kind of hierarchy between them.
Byeon Woo-seok, on the other hand, plays mysterious Grand Prince I-an in this film. He looks quite ordinary and mysterious in the very first scenes since the viewer is still unaware of all the details related to his character. However, there is something in him that clearly shows that he has much to offer, and there are many secrets hidden inside him.
It is surprising how current the issues of power play seem when viewed from the perspective of a ceremonial monarchy. The royal palace is less an instrument of power but more of an extension of it, meaning every decision made there is one made with intent. Particularly noteworthy is the character of the Queen Mother, portrayed by Gong Seung-yeon, whose actions have an air of chaos to them due to an unhealthy obsession with power.
Moreover, the absence of attempts to idealise the kdrama Perfect Crown characters enhances the high quality of this show. The drive of Hui-ju comes from years of feeling insecure and being isolated, thus the constant necessity to prove herself not only means boosting her self-confidence but also ensuring her place in this world where she was made to feel marginalised for such a long period of time. On the other hand, I-an’s life story is full of sacrifices he had to make for the sake of protecting the crown.
In the 21st Century Prince’s Wife kdrama, the combination of the two leads has given great results till now. It is not love at first sight that creates the basis for their relationship, but their clashing desires and personalities. Where Hui-ju goes without brakes, I-an forces himself to hold back. There is an inherent attractiveness to seeing two characters who are clearly imperfect move closer together and start to circle one another. This makes their bond stronger than anything seen in a typical fairytale situation.
