Our Sticky Love Review: Directed by Kim Jang-han and written by Mo Ji-hye, Netflix K-drama 이런 엿같은 사랑 stars Jung Hae-in as Jang Tae-ha, Ha Young as Go Eun-sae aka Go Ji-won, Heo Sung-tae as Baek Sang-gil, alongside Jeon Bae-soo, Seo Jung-yeon, Kim Young-ok, Jang Hye-jin, Cha Chung-hwa, Lee Jae-won, Kim Jong-tae and others. The series has 12 episodes, each with a runtime of 55-60 minutes.
Our Sticky Love Review
Netflix’s Our Sticky Love follows prosecutor Go Ji-won, who suffers from loss of memory following an incident where she almost dies when trying to uncover a powerful crime syndicate. With no memory of herself, she wakes up believing she is Go Eun-sae and is taken by Jang Tae-Ha, an ex-gangster turned boxing coach and posing as her fiancé in order to protect her. As Eun-sae tries to decipher what is the truth and what is not, she starts to adapt to her new life, oblivious of the fact that there are dangerous individuals looking for her.
One thing I liked about Netflix kdrama Our Sticky Love is that it doesn’t try to make any claims about revolutionising romantic dramas. Most tropes present in the show are not new at all: from amnesia to fake relationship to hidden identity to childhood connection and dangerous past coming after the main characters. However, rather than constantly shocking viewers with twists and turns, the TV series strives to be emotionally pleasing, which is way more valuable than striving to be original. At some point in the third or fourth episode, I stopped guessing what would happen next; I just wanted to spend more time with these characters.
Once Tae-ha returns Eun-sae to Gujin, the show is obsessed with posing one question only: Is it possible for a lie-based relationship to become reality? Tae-ha knows that he is fooling her all the time, and it gives him no peace of mind. Every time she innocently asks him how they met in the first place, why people from Gujin do not remember her, and why there is something wrong about their relationship, you can feel the anxiety in his face. Far from creating trivial miscommunications, such situations wear down Tae-ha’s confidence as he wants her to recover her memory, yet he knows that this may result in her departure.
The best thing about the Netflix series Our Sticky Love is that it doesn’t make Eun-sae a weak damsel due to her having amnesia. Despite all that, she still has a prosecutor’s intuition in her, and she finds little things that nobody else notices, always asks questions about the tales of Tae-ha, and does not believe explanations that seem unreasonable. Observing how she makes everybody lie around her makes some of the funniest scenes of this drama happen because the villagers have to continuously come up with new excuses in order to maintain the lies of Tae-ha. However, at the same time, it reminds us that there is a tough girl behind her joyful nature.
This romance blossoms organically because the storyline does not force it to happen. Unlike many dramas that use passionate confessions at the start of almost every episode, this one establishes a romantic connection by means of countless small actions. This way, whether it is Tae-ha helping Eun-sae when she is struck by another painful memory, preparing food for her without hoping for gratitude, or just sitting by her side after another tough day, romance happens due to deeds and not words.
Additionally, I enjoyed that the Netflix Korean drama Our Sticky Love slowly unravels the backstory of Tae-ha. The information of him being connected with Baek Sang-gil, the criminal group from which he was desperate to get away, explains a lot of his earlier actions. He did not claim to be a virtuous man; he wanted to become one. This character development adds emotional depth to his character, which extends beyond him just being a hot guy.
Yet another interesting point about this show is how the difference between Eun-sae’s past life and current existence proves to be quite surprising as well. Initially, she finds it impossible to accept the village since it seems way too mundane for her own self-image. It is simply inconceivable to her to voluntarily go from Seoul to a small village where everyone is weird and eccentric. However, as more episodes come out, it turns out that it was the very same elements that she despised which made her smile again.
As for the chemistry, Jung Hae-in and Ha Young perfectly carry this drama. Hae-in manages to make Tae-ha a vulnerable and sincere character whose emotional expressions are never overdone, but still allow the viewer to understand his thoughts and feelings clearly. In addition, Young is outstanding because she is capable of combining her character’s intelligence and sharp wit with amazing humour. Their banter, awkward silence, lingering looks, and growing understanding make the romantic side of their story very natural. I was already completely involved in watching them tackle any difficulty in their way.
Much credit should go to the supporting characters because they are not mere decorations in the film. Tae-ha’s grandma is at first seen to be an unfriendly and mysterious character, but when more of her past life is exposed, she turns out to be a very sympathetic one. The coach Hong and his wife bring in some much-needed humour in the series, while at the same time serving as an emotional link for the two main characters. Even the villagers who keep on getting involved in the lives of Tae-ha and Eun-sae end up giving a realistic feel of the village.
However, there are times that I find the series failing once it begins focusing on the crime element of the show. The character of Baek Sang-gil does suit the role of being the villainous threat, but the thriller aspects are not given the same treatment as the romance. At times, there is a sudden rise of tension, but then the drama instantly goes back to a slice-of-life comedy plot. Both drama elements are fun separately, but they don’t necessarily work together perfectly.
The pace is also not even during the middle of the movie. Some of the emotional tensions take longer than expected to resolve themselves, while there are instances where the characters go over points that have been made by the audience before. Luckily for the film, the chemistry makes up for the slow pace in a way that is effortless.
From an aesthetic point of view, Our Sticky Love series starts with warmth and finishes with it. This warm atmosphere is created by the vivid landscapes of the picturesque village, the silent streets, small family shops, and the tranquil surroundings. Such a setting highlights the emotional development of the characters without any need for dialogue. It is such a place that you would like to return to even after the series ends.
Netflix Our Sticky Love Review: Summing Up
All things considered, I really enjoyed Our Sticky Love. It is not one of the most unexpected K-dramas of the year, nor does it have ambitions of becoming a suspenseful thriller. But it works because it knows precisely who it is, namely, a funny, sincere, and truly romantic drama-comedy with adorable characters and great chemistry between the leads. The thriller aspects might get dull from time to time, but the emotional ones will always be interesting. If you are seeking a show that will make you smile after almost every episode but will keep you emotionally invested in the characters as well, this is your choice.
